EX AM TI PS: Re a ding sk ills
Re a din g Part 2: M u lt ip le m a t ch in g
In this part of the test you have to read three short texts about three different people.
They are all about the same topic. The title tells you what the topic is. There are seven questions.
They all start with: Which person ...?The answer to each question is the name of one of the three people.
To answer the question you need to (circle) the correct answer, A, B or C.
Example:
Tim Tom Ted
Which person did a lot of sport at school? A B C
Ex a m g u id e : M u lt ip le m a t ch in g
• Start by reading the title of the text so you know what the topic is.
• Read all the questions carefully and underline the important words. This helps when you look for the same
information in the texts.
Example:
Which person did a lot of sport at school?
• Now read the three texts for the first time without stopping. Maybe you see information similar to the
questions, but read to the end.
• Now read the first question again. Then look at the texts to find which person says this. Maybe you
remember something from one of the texts, so go to that text first to check. If not, just read from the
beginning until you find what you need.
• When you find the correct answer, underline the words in the text with the same meaning as the question.
Write the number of the question next to the part you underlined. Then circle your answer, A, B or C.
Example:
When I was a teenager I was in the school hockey, athletics and swimming teams.
• Then read the next question and do the same until you finish.
• You don’t lose points for a wrong answer, so always ( circle) a letter, even if you’re not sure.
REM EM BER!
When you look for the answer, remember that the words in the question are probably different
from the words in the text, but the meaning is the same. So if you see a word in the text that is
the same as a word in the question, it is not automatically the correct answer.
Example:
/ did a lot of sport afterschool when I was younger.
This is NOT the correct answer to the example question, because the meaning is different from
the question.

EX A M TIPS: W riting skills
The instructions in the test tell you exactly what you need to do.
Example:
You want to go to the cinema with your friend Jan on Saturday. Write an email to Jon.
The instructions also explain three things you need to include in the text. For example:
In the email:
• ask Jan to go to the cinema with you
• say what film you want to see
• say where you can meet.
• When you finish, read the text again and count the number of words. If you have included all the information
from the plan above, the text should be at least 25 words. If it’s more, that’s OK. If you haven’t written 25
words, go back and check that you have included all the points and the opening and the closing sentences.
• Give any people in the picture a name. Then write any useful vocabulary
you want to use (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.) next to each picture.

EX A M TIPS: Listening skills
You can write your answers on the question paper. At the end of the test, you will have six minutes to put all your
answers on a separate answer sheet.
• Underline the important words in the question. In the example the most important word in the question is both.
Example:
A They ore both going to a basketball match.
B They are both visiting their grandparents.
C They are both going shopping with friends.
• When you listen the first time, try and decide what the correct answer is and circle A, B or C. If you’re not sure,
don’t worry. The second time you listen you can check your first answer or decide for the first time.
• Sometimes the first time you listen you hear that one answer is definitely wrong. Cross it out. Then the second
time you listen, just focus on the other two possible answers.
• Always give an answer, even if you don’t know which one is correct. You don’t lose points for a wrong answer.
• When you have heard one text twice, don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. Focus on the next listening
text when it starts.
R EM EM BER !
You will usually hearthe people talk about all the possible answers in some way but this is a ‘trap’. Only one
answer is correct.
To avoid ‘traps’, listen carefully to every word. You will hear negative verbs (for example:I ’m not visiting my
grandparents this weekend)or things which are similar but not the same as the correct answer (for example:
I ’m going shopping with my sister on Saturday).
