Why Biomedical Sciences

Tailor your studies to your own interests
Develop your own profile in the domain of biomedical sciences by
picking one of six specialisations and by designing your own research
project.

A complementary industrial track

The tasks that alumni carry out are all related to “managing projects
in biomedical innovation”. We developed a complementary industrial
track in which you learn all the relevant management skills needed for
a successful career inside or outside of the university.

Good labour market prospects

Biomedical sciences is a fast-paced, cutting edge field with ambitious
support from the EU and wide-scale investments all over Europe. As a
result, there is growing demand for highly specialised professionals in
both academia and industry.

Your future
Studying biomedical sciences allows you to choose from a wide variety of
careers, such as hospitals, universities and industry including governmental
agencies, patient organisations, environmental agencies, research organisations,
pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies and public health institutes.
The specialisations

Genetics and Genomics

Genetics enable us to understand how
diseases are inherited, what screening
and testing options or personal
treatments are available.

Genomics enable us to discover why

some people get sick from certain
infections, environmental factors, and
behaviours, while others do not.
Biomedical Imaging

Biomedical imaging can help assess

the effectiveness of treatments and
help in their development. It offers
several distinctive opportunities:
• functional information in health
and disease,
• non-invasive investigation of
animal/human models at multiple
time points,
• revealing internal hidden structure
and diagnosing and monitoring the
disease.
Inflammation and Pathophysiology
Our ageing society is facing many
threats, including oncologic, neurologic
and cardiovascular problems.
Frequently, these problems are of
inflammatory nature.

This specialisation aims to develop a

thorough, clinically relevant under-
standing of different mechanisms of
the development of disease.

Invasive neuromodulation
Building on decades of fundamental
and clinical research, neuro-
modulation has recently emerged
as a promising field that has the
potential to change the neuroscience
landscape.

Equipped with detailed knowledge of

neuroanatomy and neurophysiology,
a wide spectrum of invasive and
non-invasive techniques has been
developed that allows manipulation
of the central nervous system and
opens the door for novel clinical
applications in various diseases.
Nutrition, Physical Activity and
Metabolism
This specialisation offers fundamental
research in how improving nutrition
and lifestyle affects deterioated
function and health.

Regenerative Medicine
An increasingly ageing population
in the industrialised world is
accompanied by several new
challenges. The interventions that
are used to successfully restore
the function of damaged organs or
tissues have changed in the past
decades.

While in the past implants were used

to passively take over the function of
a poorly functioning tissue, nowadays
the focus is on developing methods
that temporary ‘trigger’ the body to
repair or regenerate itself. Such as
stem cell technology.
Faculty of Health, Medicine
and Life Sciences
Together with the University Hospital Maastricht, we form the University Medical
Centre MUMC+. This cooperation connects research, education and healthcare and
raises our programmes to a higher level. Our faculty is all about health and life.

With us, you study in a different way from traditional universities, through
Problem-Based Learning (PBL). You work in small teaching groups, participate in
practicals and attend lectures. This helps you understand the subject matter better.
