About Virtual Product Development and Adams

You’ve heard it before: manufacturing companies today face intense global competition, demanding
customers, fragmented markets, increasing product complexity, compressed product cycles, price and
profit pressures, strict regulatory and liability environments, systems integration and supply chain issues,
skyrocketing costs of testing and physical prototyping, and on and on…
What you don’t often hear, though, is a strategy for enabling your company to improve your new product
development process to meet these challenges.
Whether you are delivering airplanes, automobiles, ships, biomedical devices, golf clubs or children’s
toys to your customers, MSC Software’s goal is to help you improve your new product development
process, allowing you to be significantly better at your concept development, design, testing, and
production activities through the application of VPD.
VPD is an environment that uses an integrated combination of both simulation software technology and
traditional techniques to design, test, manufacture, and support products. The result is that cost-effective
designs that meet all performance, safety, durability, and reliability requirements can be brought to
market in less time and for less cost.
Adams, as part of VPD, is focused on enhancing your ability to make better product development
decisions, explore innovative design alternatives, and consistently get the product right. It is the world's
most widely used mechanical system simulation software. It enables you to produce virtual prototypes,
realistically simulating the full-motion behavior of complex mechanical systems on your computers and
quickly analyzing multiple design variations until an optimal design is achieved. This reduces the
number of costly physical prototypes, improves design quality, and dramatically reduces product
development time.

Spline Tools
Much of Adams Car component stiffness and damping data is in the form of numeric tables used to
generate spline curves. These numeric values may derived from test data or estimated via hand
calculation. There are several common problems associated with these curves, such as noisy data, too
many data points, too few data points, unintended changes in slope and so on.
The Spline Check and Repair Tool allows you to check the quality of the splines that are used to define
the stiffness and damping of the following components:
• Bushings
• Springs
• Dampers
• Bumpstops
• Reboundstops

Several spline defects can be detected and repaired automatically. The tool checks for these common
errors, and repairs them if desired. The check and repair operations may be performed on a single spline,
an entity type (for example, ac_bushing), a subsystem, an assembly, or an entire database. The user can
choose to perform any one or more of the following checks:
• Symmetry
• Zero Crossing
• Evenly Spaced Data
• Minimum Slope
• Curve Monotony
4 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Car

• Slope Monotony

The associated Spline Comparison tool allows you to plot splines currently loaded in session, or directly
from property files. You can select two splines to plot simultaneously, and view the data in plot form,
tabular form, or both.

Anti-Roll Bar
An "Anti-Roll Bar" (ARB) object has been made available in Adams Car. This functionality has been
provided in both the Template Builder and Standard Interface mode.
In general, this functionality helps you to create an ARB with three different modelling methods: Simple,
Beam and FE Part. The simple type ARB can be used for quick initial modelling while the Beam and FE
Part types can be used for higher fidelity modelling.
CHAPTER 1 5
What’s New

Alignment Extensions
Previously adjustable forces in Adams Car did not support the alignment of caster angle. Also, users
were required to create additional motions and variables to store the adjusted values. In this release, users
can adjust caster angle using an adjuster force of type caster without creating any additional motions and
variables. Furthermore, alignment configurations can now be specified from the event dialogs.

Template Design Option Extensions

Three new steering related templates have been added to the Adams Car "acar_concept" database. Each
illustrates a set of newly available design options that can be set via the "Set Design Options" dialog. The
templates and corresponding design options are listed below:

CHAPTER 1 7
What’s New

Testrig Add/Remove/Replace
In the last few releases, some new full-vehicle testrigs have been introduced, such as the tilt table and the
SPMM. Prior to this release, one had to create a new assembly to reference each of these testrigs.
Therefore, if there is a change to any non-testrig content the user must manually edit each of the
assemblies. In this release the capability to edit an assembly to add, remove or replace a testrig has been
implemented to eliminate this redundant work.

Adams Car

Linear Analysis Between Mini-Maneuvers

In previous Adams versions, the Event Builder included support for Adams Linear solutions performed
after static equilibrium, before dynamic events. In this release, the Event Builder can be used to insert
Adams Linear solutions following any dynamic mini-maneuvers.
CHAPTER 1 9
What’s New

Point Force Actuators

The Point-Point actuator has been replaced with a new, more capable Point Force actuator. Previously,
the Point-Point actuator could only model action-reaction forces along a line-of-sight. The new Point
Force actuator includes this capability and adds two new orientation options: "Moving with Body" and
"Space Fixed."

Adams Chassis to Adams Car Database Migration Phase 1

For this release of Adams Car, it is now possible to directly read in Adams Chassis subsystems and
assemblies (that is, system files). Adams Car will perform migration of supported components and the
model will be loaded into the current session. However, because there are still some differences between
the products (to be resolved in future Adams releases), there remain some limitations that users need to
be aware of. Any critical issues found during the migration process will be printed to the Message
Window in Adams Car. Once the model is imported, it is important to save the assembly or subsystem
so that the migration will not have to be performed each time the model is loaded.
Not all Adams Chassis templates have been migrated. For this release, the following subsystems are
supported:
• body_full.py (unibody, body-on-frame, body-box-on-frame)
• f_4link.py, four_link.py
• hotch.py (rear only)
• macpherson.py
• sla.py
• slacoil_rear.py
• tire.py
• acc_tilt_3ujoint
• str_col_adv
• tilt_bracket
10 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Car

Each of these templates has a corresponding mapping file (.csv). Users can create their own mapping file
and templates for unsupported configurations. See documentation for further details.

Note: To support migration, several changes are applied to the Adams Chassis model during
model update to Adams 2016. None of these changes should affect the model in Adams
Chassis, but will aid in the migration process. These are described in the Adams Chassis
section of this document.

Assumptions
• Adams Chassis uses separate steering gear and steering column subsystems. These will be
merged into a single subsystem during migration. To open the merged subsystem, specify both
subsystems in the Open Subsystem dialog box.
• Adams Car provides for additional flexibility in specifying subsystems, so users are not limited
to the set supported by Adams Chassis. During migration, the stabilizer bar subsystem will be
removed from the subsystem file and a new subsystem file will be created on-the-fly.
• During migration, loading template will be automatically created based on Adams Chassis
loading subsystem and stored in the current working database.
• All property file references will be written out to the current database during migration.
However, only the current active property will be visible in Adams Car
• For leafsprings, the .ltf file reference should be included in Adams Chassis:

Otherwise, Adams Car will use a default property file, and the leaf spring will need to be
regenerated:

• In the body subsystem, for aerodynamic forces, Adams Car uses a hardpoint. This hardpoint will
be set to the location used in the aerodynamics tab of Adams Chassis. However, the default
location is not currently supported.
• Driveline activity will be turned off for half vehicle simulations since these hardpoints are not
present in the Adams Chassis suspension subsystem.
• Kinematic flag is set to on for the simple traction as no powertrain mounts are present in this
subsystem.
CHAPTER 1 11
What’s New

• Graphics are turned off in body subsystem. This can be toggled via a parameter variable.
• For EPAS, the following are exposed as hardpoints:

Hardpoint Location Default location

rcb_gear CM location of rack_motor rack_center, offset by 300mm in Y-
direction
rack_motor CM location of rack_center, offset by 300mm in Y-
orepas_motor_inertia direction, and 100mm in Z-direction
tilt_ujoint Midpoint of n/a
(tilt_bracket only) steering_wheel_center and
upper_ujoint hardpoints

• Adams Car uses a different alignment methodology, so alignment settings cannot be

automatically migrated. Alignment analysis should be performed in Adams Car.
The following table lists values not present in the Adams Chassis model that are required in
Adams Car:

Type Name Value

Parameter Variable max_rack_force 10000.0 Nm
Parameter Variable max_steering_torque 60000.0 Nmm

Limitations
• Instrumentation subsystem is not supported.
• Powertrain and braking subsystems will use Adams Car default templates.
• Default powertrain in Adams Car does not support all-wheel drive. During migration, the
powertrain (awd.py) will be treated as rear-wheel drive.
• Sprung mass percentage is not defined in the Chassis subsystems, however Adams Car
templates used during migration use the same sprung mass percentages as defined in the Chassis
templates. In Adams Car, users can very easily set sprung mass percentage via a data table.
• Jounce bumper formulation is different in Adams Car. During migration, a warning message
will be issued and the install method will be changed to 'impact length'.

• Adams Car uses a simple formulation of aerodynamic forces. During migration, only the activity
and location will be migrated.
12 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Car

• Bushing of type joint is not supported. Adams Car will use a bushing property file that
approximates the appropriate bushing. However, for some bushing types, the orientation may
need to be adjusted to match the joint type used.

• Rear steering is not supported.

• Custom .adm text blocks are not supported.

Differing Orientations for Symmetric Construction Frames

In dialogs where one can set orientation dependencies the "Delta Orientation from Coordinate" option,
if the entity you are orienting is a left/right marker or construction frame, you can specify a unique Left
Orientation and Right Orientation. This allows you to create a left/right marker pair that are oriented
differently from each other.

Chassis Database Updates to Support Migration

For this release of Adams Car, it is now possible to directly read in Adams Chassis subsystems and
assemblies (that is, system files). See the Adams Car section of this document for more details. To
support these actions, several changes are applied to the Adams Chassis model during model update to
Adams 2016. None of these changes should affect the model in Adams Chassis, but will aid in the
migration process.
• Wheel data will be extracted from tire property file and written to system file. This data is used
during migration. If the property file in changed after model update, these values may be
incorrect.
• Some hardpoints are copied between subsystems due to differences in convention as to where
the subsystem is divided.
• Steering gear ratios are extracted and written to the system file.
• Some solver settings are renamed to be more consistent with Adams Car:

Adams - EDEM Co-simulation

Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) is a proven and popular method for performing virtual testing where
large numbers of small particles are involved. There are a number of applications which can benefit from
coupling a multi-body dynamics (MBD) model with a DEM model. Examples include design of bulk
materials handling equipment, earth-moving equipment and vehicle mobility on soft or loose terrain.
With this release, the Adams Co-simulation Interface (ACSI) has been extended to support co-simulation
between Adams and the leading DEM software EDEM®. A single Adams model and a single EDEM
model can co-simulate with each other. The models interact with each other in the following manner:
rigid surfaces in the EDEM model are moved by corresponding markers in the Adams model; that
motion generates reaction forces which are passed from EDEM back to the Adams model through
general six-component forces (GFORCEs).
Unfamiliar with EDEM? See these resources:
• EDEM eLearning Centre - access free courses that introduce EDEM:

Adams Co-simulation Interface

One-Click Local Launch

The ACSI configuration file (.cosim) and its editor have both been updated to include a specification of
the process launch commands and working directories. If these are specified and all tools are being run
on the same machine from which the ACSI configuration file editor is being run, then the "Run" button
will automatically launch all processes. Previously users had to manually launch the Adams and other
tools' processes. This remains the case for running jobs remotely.

Supported Versions of Software for Co-simulation

An updated table of the Adams co-simulation Interface supported versions of Marc and EDEM is shown
below:

* The ACSI 2016 version requires a workaround for the case of Adams models co-simulating with Marc
versions 2014.2 and 2015. Marc 2016 does not require this workaround. For details see the "Special
requirements to run Marc" section of the Adams product documentation (online Help) under "Adams Co-

Ramp Up and RPM Smoothing in ac_dyno UDE

To analyze the driveline distribution of the cyclic irregularity originating from the engine firing stroke,
Adams Driveline users can define the current engine torque dependent on crankshaft angle (for example,
over 720deg for 4 stroke engine) and angular velocity via a 3D spline. Evaluating the current engine
torque from such a 3D spline during runtime, the actual value of crankshaft angle and angular velocity
will be used. Due to the cyclic irregularity using this approach will lead to additional artificial excitations
that will result in unrealistic behavior. Furthermore the engine torque will be applied directly from the
beginning the simulation which leads to undesired initial transients.
To resolve this problem, the ac_dyno UDE has been enhanced to account for the cyclic irregularity
originating from engine fire stroke. Specifically, a smooth torque fade-in over time via a step function
has been added for dynos defined using the torque type, curve function and angular velocity file type.
Also, a new state variable has been employed to track the mean rpm value (angular velocity) so that the
engine torque used is based on the mean rpm as opposed to actual rpm as was done previously.

Welcome to Adams Explore

Explore is a new feature in Adams View and Adams Car enabling the export of user-selected model
characteristics to a spreadsheet file (.xlsx format) from which one can modify model parameters, run
simulations and generate plots. This is especially useful for users who wish to enable non-Adams-user
colleagues to perform "what-if" studies with their models based on certain parameters, simulations and
output in a familiar environment like Excel.
From Adams View or Adams Car Standard Interface, the user specifies which content to include in the
exported spreadsheet and where on the network Adams is configured to accept spreadsheet-based runs.
From a spreadsheet program, like Excel, one can then edit model parameters and launch analyses for the
simulations the Adams user included in the exported spreadsheet (Adams View simulation scripts or
Adams Car events).
When the simulation(s) complete a new spreadsheet is generated that includes results: values for the
design objectives originally exported to the spreadsheet and plots based on the plot configuration file
specified by the Adams user when originally exporting the spreadsheet.
Explore also allows the import of spreadsheets back into Adams so that models can be updated with the
parameter values specified by the spreadsheet user.
There are two workflow options: in one the Adams analyses are managed via a simple webpage, this is
available for spreadsheet users on both Windows and Linux platforms; in the other, for Windows users
only, the analyses are managed directly in the spreadsheet.
• Webpage Workflow
• Spreadsheet Workflow (Windows Only)
34 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Explore

Webpage Workflow
Adams Explore will enable solving and reviewing results of complex multibody dynamics problems
using Adams without having it installed on the local machine. The only strict requirement is to be on a
device on the same computer network as the machine configured to run Adams. If the device has a web
browser the example workflow like in the picture below is made possible.

An Adams analyst exports a workbook file with information about a model to be run from inside Adams.
The information contained comprise where the model is located, where it is to be computed, which
parameters are subject to change and which analyses to be run. Also added are responses of interest such
as plot curves and design objectives.
The Adams analyst then sends the file (1) via email to a colleague, who is an engineer possibly without
knowledge about Adams and, who is using a computer or a device without Adams installed. This
colleague, the "Engineer" opens the file in an editor that supports the document type (for example,
Microsoft Excel or Google Docs) and edits some of the parameters. The Engineer then clicks on a
hyperlink in the workbook file which opens a webpage (2). On this webpage the workbook file is
uploaded (3) and received by and the servers which has been started previously on the "Analysis
Machine". This analysis machine is a normal computer which has Adams installed and can be the same
as the Computer 1.
The web server tells the job server to start an Adams Explore job based on the workbook file. Adams is
started (4). After completion an output workbook files is written to the working directory of Adams. This
file is picked up by the web server (5) and made available on the web page. The Engineer sees this file
downloads it to his device (6) and opens it in the editor to review the response of the changed parameters.
CHAPTER 1 35
What’s New

Spreadsheet Workflow (Windows Only)

A second workflow is available on windows with the help of a special Excel add-in. This add-in contains
interface buttons coupled to VBA code used to communicate with the servers and to send output status
to a special worksheet.

This
colleague, the "Engineer" opens the file in Microsoft Excel to which he has added a provided add-in and
edits some of the parameters. The Engineer then clicks on a button in the add-in which saves and submits
the file (2). The file is received by the servers which have been started previously on the "Analysis
Machine". This analysis machine is a normal computer which has Adams installed and can be the same
as the Computer 1.
The web server tells the Job server to start an Adams Explore job based on the workbook file. Adams is
started (3). After completion an output workbook file is written to the working directory of Adams. This
file is picked up by the web server (5) and made available. The Excel add-in asks the web server
continuously, or at the request of the Engineer, for the status. When the job is completed and the file is
available the file can be opened directly in Excel to review the response of the changed parameters.

Known Issues

ADMS-34475 When submitting an analysis from Excel on a Windows machine to a

remote Linux Server on which Adams will run, if the webpage submission
method is used one should avoid Internet Explorer; problems with directory
paths have been observed. Please use a different browser, like Mozilla
Firefox.
ADMS-34101 Browsing for Adams Explore Excel files is not working in MS Edge
Browser on Windows10 if the original is still open in Excel when
submitting the job. Workaround is to close the file or simply use another
browser like IE or Firefox.

View or Adams Car GUI on a Linux machine through remote access from
a Windows machine via some tools (e.g., Exceed and Putty), the Adams
View or Adams Car session will lock up while the web server and job server
are running. One must close those windows to regain control of the session.
A workaround is to not launch the Explore web server and job server from
an Adams GUI but, instead, launch it from the Adams command line (e.g.,
"adams2016 aexplore ru-jobserver" and "adams2016 aexplore ru-
webserver").

Runtime Rigid-Flex Switch

Through the implementation of new Adams Solver command arguments, a flexible body's representation
can be switched between rigid and flexible during an analysis. This is useful when only a subset of an
event requires flexibility in a given component. Simulation time can be reduced by treating some
components flexibly for only those portions of the analysis where the result accuracy actually requires it.
To use this capability one must, either in Adams View or in the .adm file, declare a flexible body to be a
"dual-representation" body and specify its initial representation as rigid or flexible (modal). Then, in an
.acf one can use the extended FLEX_BODY command to switch the representation at a specific time or
after a SENSOR has been triggered and returned control back to the .acf. The command syntax follows:
FLEX_BODY/id, REPRESENTATION = MODAL
FLEX_BODY/id, REPRESENTATION = RIGID
One can switch from rigid to flexible or from flexible to rigid. One can also perform multiple switches
in the same simulation script or .acf.
Whenever the representation is set to rigid, the flexible body behaves as though the inertia modeling
selection is set to rigid (also known as disabling INVAR6). Since Adams 2012 flexible bodies set to have
a rigid representation via the inertia modeling options perform much more closely to true rigid bodies
(parts) in terms of simulation speed. This makes it much easier to compare the accuracy/performance
balance of your model versus swapping true rigid parts with flexible bodies.
When post-processing a dual-representation flexible body one will of course notice that outputs specific
to the flexible representation (stress/strain recovery, flexible mode states and so on.) lack any data for the
duration(s) in which the representation was set to rigid. Also, one will see a significant speed up in
animation for those time intervals when a flexible body is rigid since the animation code does not need
to compute changes in deformations or stress/strain.
38 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Flex

An important limitation of this functionality in this release is that dual-representation flexible bodies do
not yet directly support contact with any other bodies. One would have to use dummy part geometry fixed
to the flexible body for contact modeling.

Last Release for Nastran MNF Generation via FEM Translate

This is the last release in which support is guaranteed for Nastran MNF generation via the "FEM
Translate" button on the flexible body generation dialog. This allowed one to generate a modal neutral
file from MSC Nastran output files, but it is obsolete since MSC Nastran supports MNF generation
directly.

RBE2 must have non-zero stiffness value or else the model may not get
convergence by some computational difficulty in Solver. For example, if
some dependent GRIDs of RBE2 are connected only to solid elements then
they don’t have rotational stiffness, so the independent degrees of freedom
should be 123 instead of 123456. In addition, the number of dependent
GRIDs of RBE2 should be more than 2 in this case to avoid the singularity
of the independent degrees of freedom computation.

FFT 3D vs. General Output Channels

The 3D Fast-Fourier Transform (FFT) capability has been extended to support such plots whereby the
second independent axis (the Z-axis) can be an output channel other than time. Previously 3D FFT plots
could only be made against time "slices" in the Z-axis. Now, any result set component can be selected.
This is particularly useful for plotting against the rotational velocity of an object in the model as is the
case with rotating machinery.
CHAPTER 1 49
What’s New

Enhanced Multi-Run Plot Support in Plot Configuration File

A new option has been added to the plot configuration file (.plt) export called "Collapse Multi-Run
Plots." When selected, anytime a plot contains multiple curves representing the exact same quantity and
using the exact same expression then, for those curves, only one curve is saved to the .plt file, and the
order in which curve attributes are applied to curves is stored per plot. This is to facilitate a multiple-run
scenario where one wants to, first, interactively plot a single quantity across multiple analyses and define
the curve styles, then secondly, wants to re-use this curve style specification for future multiple-run
scenarios.
If this checkbox is unselected, all curves on any plot get written to the .plt file. Thus, when importing
that .plt file against multiple analyses each curve will get re-generated for each analysis.
For example: a plot has three curves, the same quantity plotted three times once per three different
analyses. If "Collapse Multi-Run Plots" is selected, then when the .plt file is imported to another session
against three analyses three curves will be generated. If "Collapse Multi-Run Plots" is not selected, then
when the .plt file is imported to another session against three analyses nine curves will be generated.

Record .avi in Background

The ability to record .avi formatted movies animations while the Adams PostProcessor window is in the
background has been added in this release. That is, one can successfully record .avi movies of animations
even if during the recording other windows are placed in the foreground over top of the Adams
PostProcessor window or if the Adams Pot Processor window is moved (for example, to another monitor)
or if it is minimized. Though, in the case of window minimization, only the model animation records
successfully; any adjacent panes of plot tracking animation will not appear correctly. Previous to this
release, only the .mpg format option supported recording in the background.
CHAPTER 1 51
What’s New

Plot Tracking Tool Change in Behavior

The keyboard's arrow keys now control the plot tracking position only when plot tracking is active and,
otherwise, they control left-to-right panning. Since Adams 2013, they have controlled left-right panning

Adams Solver

Cylinder-in-Cylinder Analytical Contact

Since Adams 2014 external cylinder-to-cylinder contact (that is, contact between the outer surfaces of
both cylinders) has been treated analytically. With this release, analytically-based contact is available for
contact pairs in which one cylinder is inside of another. The interior surface of one cylinder (the "outer"
cylinder) and exterior surface of the other cylinder enforce contact. Neither, either or both faces of the
"outer" cylinder can be selected to also enforce contact. Note that no new geometry primitives have been
created in Adams. It is simply that the interior surfaces of the existing "solid" cylinder can be used for
contact enforcement and the detection is done via analytical methods instead of a behind-the-scenes
tessellation.
Analytical methods use the regular nature of certain shapes (for example, length and radius of a cylinder)
to determine the boundaries of the geometry for contact detection as opposed to tessellating the surfaces.
They analytical approach has the advantage of typically being much faster and not introducing artificial
"noise" into the contact force results due to the sharp edges of the tessellation. These factors combine to
make simulations run much faster usually.
56 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Solver

Bending Factor Addition to Friction

The cylindrical and translational joint friction translational force now includes a term whose force
contribution to the overall friction force is: F = c*Torque/distance, where "c" is a new user-specified
bending factor. Previously "c" was always assumed to be 1.0. So, the only means to achieve the same
effect as a bending factor unequal to 1.0 was to manipulate the "Initial Overlap" input but that only works
for cases where the overlap can be assumed to remain constant as the parts translate along the axis of
allowed motion.
The bending factor can be specified in the joint fiction dialogs in Adams View and Adams Car whenever
the Bending Moment option is selected. In the .adm file, a new argument, BENDING_FACTOR has been
added to the FRICTION statement.

PAC-MC Tire Extensions

When using the PAC-MotorCycle tire model (PAC-MC) in linear transient mode (usemode 11-14), the
tire relaxation length depends on the wheel load. However, in real life the tire relaxation becomes smaller
when the tire slip is larger. In other words the tire response speed is faster while cornering compared to
driving straight.

When using the advanced (non-linear) transient mode of PAC-MC (use mode 21-24 now available in this
release for PAC-MC), the relaxation has a dependency on slip also. This dependency is defined by the
longitudinal or lateral stiffness in between the contact mass and the tire implicitly:
62 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Adams Tire

Also in this release the Tire Data Fitting Tool (TDFT) has been extended with support for the PAC-
MotorCycle tire model that allows the user to identify the tire model parameters out of measurement data.
The advanced transient parameters can be determined as well.
CHAPTER 1 63
What’s New

Road Converter to CRG

One of two important enhancements made this release which can significantly improve the performance
of Adams Tire models is a Road Convertor that converts 3D Shell or 3D Spline Roads to OpenCRG
(CRG - Curved Regular Grid) roads.
A regular grid representation of the road (such as CRG or RGR) is much faster to evaluate compared to
the non-regular grid roads such as 3D spline or 3D shell. By converting the non-regular grid roads to
CRG road format it is expected to improve computation speed in particular when used in combination
with 3D Enveloping Contact for which the road contact needs to determine the position of the cam. Also,
tire models such as FTire that make many road calls will benefit from converting 3D Spline roads to CRG
road format.
Simulation CPU time reduction by as much as half has been observed on some models by converting a
road from a 3D spline representation to CRG.

Multi-threading 3D Enveloping Contact

The second of two important enhancements made this release which can significantly improve the
performance of Adams Tire models is the support for multi-threading by the 3D Enveloping Contact
option. When driving over road obstacles that have a wavelength shorter than the tire circumference, the
tire enveloping behavior starts to play an important role. For modelling this non-linear obstacle
swallowing effect, the so-called 'tandem-egg' approach is used. In the 'tandem egg' or 'tandem cam'
approach a series of connected elliptical cams are defined which shape corresponds to the outside tire
contour in the tire contact patch zone. During the simulation the contact of each cam with the road is
determined, requiring many road function calls. The sum of the position and orientation of all cams
results in an effective height, effective slope, effective road curvature and effective road camber for the
tire model. Applying multi-threading to the cams is expected to improve simulation speed. This is
achieved via a new parameter in the tire property file (.tir) called CONTACT_THREADS which is found
under the section [CONTACT_COEFFICIENTS]. Setting CONTACT_THREADS to 1 will mean that
for each tire one additional thread is used for the 3D Enveloping Contact.
This feature has shown as much as a 25% reduction in elapsed simulation time on some models.

Utility to Remove Unused Markers

A utility has been added which lists the unused markers in a model and provides the option to delete them.
This can be a convenient way to clean up a model making it easier to work with, especially if the model
is being shared with colleagues that were not the original authors. The interface, available from the Tools
menu in both Adams View and Adams Car, allows users to manually remove markers from the list prior
to deleting the markers in the list. The utility identifies unused markers as those with no dependents; that
is, any marker not involved in:
• Object definitions like geometry, constraints or forces
• Body definitions like center or mass or inertia reference markers
• Design-time expressions, for example for parametrization
• Run-time functions, for example defining the value of a motion or force component

Be aware that markers used only by user subroutine functions hardcoded to the marker ID will be
identified by this command as unused. If you reference marker ID's directly in object runtime functions
calling user subroutines, then use this utility very cautiously.
CHAPTER 1 67
What’s New

This utility is based on the longstanding Adams View command "mdi marker delete unused" which
previously only worked against a single body. Now, it has been extended to support an entire model.

Parasolid Import Toggle for Single or Multiple Parts

A new option for the import of Parasolid geometry assemblies has been added. The "Explode Assembly"
option will create separate Adams View parts for each piece of geometry in the Parasolid assembly. Left
unchecked all geometry will be associated with a single Adams View part upon import.

CAD Interoperability Version Support Updates

Updates to the versions supported for import and export of CAD files through the CAD interoperability
feature have been made. Key extensions include support now for Inventor 2016, Solidworks 2016 and
Unigraphics NX10.
See the table below for details of the versions supported in Adams 2016.0.

Custom Data Table Extensions

For users who create their own custom dialog boxes, the Adams View data table object has been
extended. It now supports the ability to set columns to be conditionally un-editable and it supports new
data types for cells. That is, cells can now contain and be validated against more than real numbers. Text
strings, Adams View database objects, option menus, push buttons and toggles (checkboxes) are all now
valid data types for the Adams View data table. For details on how to use these, see the Adams View
command language documentation for the commands "interface data_table set column" and "interface
data_table insert column." Note that the data table remains unsupported by the Adams View dialog box
builder GUI.

Updated FEA Component

The FEA component leveraged by Adams ViewFlex has been updated to a version consistent with MSC
Nastran 2016.
CHAPTER 1 69
What’s New

Last Release for Precision Shaded and Z Short Shaded

Render Options
This is the last release in which support is guaranteed for the geometry rending options within Adams
View known as "precision shaded" and "Z short shaded.

EDS Read Suppress CPP Option Deprecated

Within the Adams View command language the "suppress_cpp" option on the command "file
enhanced_data_set read" is no longer supported since Adams no longer includes a third-party copy of
the C preprocessor, cpp. Commands with or without this argument specified now always behave as
though suppress_cpp=yes

Adjusted FE Part Nodes Definition Interface

The Nodes page in the FE Part creation wizard has been slightly reorganized to better label and group
common items for enhanced usability:

online help (from the Help menu in any product, select Adams Help, on the left pane, select
Configuring Adams).

the version number, for example adams2016.
2. Click on the tool representing the product you want to start.

Running Adams Products

Starting Adams Products on Windows

You start any Adams product from the Start menu. You can also use the Start menu to:
• Change your license type
• Generate problem reports
• Set Adams preferences

For more information on these or other operations, see the Running and Configuring online help.

To start a product on Windows:

• From the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Adams 2016, point to the name of the
product you want to start.

Tip: Select the corresponding desktop icon for the product, if you installed it on your
desktop.

To start a product from DOS shell in Windows:

• Start → Programs → Adams 2016 → Command Prompt.
• An alternative is to add the /bin directory under the Adams installation directory to your user
PATH environment variable. You can do this via the Control Panel:
a. Type environment in the Control Panel search box.
b. Select the Edit environment variables for your account pick.
86 Adams 2016 Release Guide
Starting Adams Products

• Check to see if you already have a PATH variable defined under “User variables”. If it exists
then edit it, add a semicolon “;” to the end of the existing value, and then add the “bin” directory
under the Adams installation directory. Otherwise select New..., use PATH for the variable name
and add the “bin” directory under the Adams installation directory as the value. The default
location of this directory is:
Windows Adams: C:\MSC.Software\Adams\2016\bin

• Once you are done click OK.

Note: Windows appends your User PATH to the System PATH environment variable, so there is
no need to copy the existing System PATH variable to your user PATH variable. This
behavior is unique to the User PATH variable. For all other environment variables, a User
variables definition overrides a System Variables definition.

Support for Easy5 and MATLAB

Easy5
This release of Adams Controls is certified to run with Easy5 2015, 2013, 2010, 2010.1.2, 2010.1.3 and
2010.1.4. Easy5 version support is subject to change. For the latest information, see updates to the
Release Guide here:
http://simcompanion.mscsoftware.com/.

MATLAB
The supported versions of MATLAB is R2014a and R2014b.
On the Windows 10 operating system Adams Controls supports MATLAB 2015a.

Notes: • MATLAB 2015a has to be configured to use Visual Studio 2013 C/C++ compilers
using mex -setup.
• MATLAB 2015a supports only up to Intel Composer 2013 for FORTRAN
compilers. Also, Intel Composer 2015 is not compatible for Windows 10. Hence
there is a limitation in terms of FORTRAN compiler setting in MATLAB 2015a on
Windows 10. So, FORTRAN cannot be used with MATLAB 2015a in this Adams
2016 release.

For more information on MATLAB platforms and compatibility, see:

http://www.mathworks.com/support

Note: If you want to co-simulate with Easy5 or MATLAB and you are running Adams Controls
on one of the platforms that Easy5 or MATLAB does not support, you should consider
using TCP/IP communication. This allows Adams Controls to communicate with Easy5 or
MATLAB even though the codes are running on different platforms.
