ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We would like to express our gratitude towards Prof. Anand Aware for guiding us in our
microproject, his advices helped us tremendously all the time in our research and writings.
This project helped us in communication and taught us many more things. However, it would
have been impossible without the help of our mentor. We would also like to thank our parents
for providing us support and expenses for the required work.
Thanks.

PRINTER
The best-known non-impact printers are the inkjet printer and the laser printer. The inkjet
sprays ink from an ink cartridge at very close range to the paper as it rolls by, while the laser
printer uses a laser beam reflected from a mirror to attract ink (called toner) to selected paper
areas as a sheet rolls over a drum.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRINTERS -
• Inkjet printers
Inkjet printers recreate a digital image by spraying ink onto paper. These are the most
common type of personal printer.
5|Page
• Laser printers
Laser printers are used to create high-quality prints by passing a laser beam at a high
speed over a negatively charged drum to define an image. Color laser printers are
more often found in professional settings.

office use. Here are some of its specifications:

• 3D printers
3D printers are a relatively new printer technology. 3D printing creates a physical object
from a digital file. It works by adding layer upon layer of material until the print job is
complete and the object is whole.

CONNECTING AND INSTALLATION OF PRINTER –
1. After connecting the printer and turning it on, you'll need to install the printer's software and
drivers. Every printer should come with the software used to install a printer in Windows or your
operating system.
2. After everything is plugged in, turn on the computer.
3. Insert the CD that came with the printer. If the CD does not automatically start, open My
Computer, double-click the CD drive, and then click the Setup or Install file. If you have
downloaded the drivers, run the downloaded setup file.
4. Follow the installation wizard, and once completed, your software is installed.
5. Test the printer to make sure it is working.

SCANNER
A scanner is a device that captures digital images
of physical documents or photographs. It works
by shining a light over the item being scanned and
recording the reflection of the light using a
photosensitive element such as a CCD (charge-
coupled device) or CIS (contact image sensor).
Scanners can produce high-quality images with resolutions ranging from 300 to 1200 DPI (dots per inch)
or more. The image file format can be saved in a variety of formats, including JPEG, TIFF, BMP, and
PDF. Some scanners also come with OCR (optical character recognition) software that can convert scanned
text into editable text.
When scanning one page using a scanner, there are several factors that can affect the quality of the resulting
image. These include the resolution of the scanner, the color mode used (grayscale or color), and the file
format used to save the image. Generally, a resolution of 300 DPI is sufficient for text documents, while a
resolution of 600 DPI or higher is recommended for photographs. It's also important to make sure the
document is placed straight on the scanner to avoid distortion.

TYPES OF SCANNER
• Flatbed Scanner:
This is very commonly used and available in the markets readily. These have a flat surface for
screening with a cover that must be lifted to place the material that has to be scanned. This model is
viable for scanning books like magazines, educational content that is bound to be bulky.

• 3D Scanner
A 3-D scanner is a device that identifies, analyzes, collects and draws/displays shapes or
three-dimensional models of real-world environments or solid objects. A 3-D scanner enables
the capture of geometric shapes and the recreation of the physical appearance of tangible
objects, allowing them to be built and displayed on a computer device.

• Handheld scanner:
These are essentially used to scan bar-codes, thus useful for business transactions and general use.
Other scanners like the overhead scanner, the big format scanner, slide or negative scanners are also
available in the market.

• Film scanner:
A film scanner is a device made for scanning photographic film directly into a computer
without the use of any intermediate printmaking.

THE TECHNOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRINTER
AND SCANNER-
The main technological difference between a printer and a scanner is in their functionality
and how they process data.
A printer is a device that creates a hard copy of digital documents or images by transferring
ink or toner onto paper or other media. A printer receives data from a computer or other
device and processes it to create a printed image or text. The printing process can be done
through a variety of methods, such as inkjet, laser, or thermal printing.
On the other hand, a scanner is a device that captures a digital image of a physical document
or image, and saves it in a digital format such as JPEG, PDF, or TIFF. A scanner works by
using light sensors to read the document or image and convert it into a digital format. Scanners
can be used to digitize documents, photographs, artwork, and other types of images.
While both printers and scanners can be connected to computers or other devices, they differ
in terms of their primary function. A printer is used to create physical copies of digital
documents or images, while a scanner is used to create digital copies of physical documents
or images. Additionally, printers typically require ink or toner cartridges to function, while
scanners do not.
In terms of technology, printers and scanners use different types of components such as
sensors, motors, and cartridges, which are optimized for their respective functions. Printers
require printing heads, ink or toner cartridges, and a variety of mechanical parts to feed paper
through the printer. Scanners typically use a scanning head, a light source, and a
photosensitive element such as a CCD or CIS sensor to capture the image.
Overall, printers and scanners are two different types of devices with different technological
components and functions, designed to meet specific needs for document management and
reproduction.

KEY FEATURES THAT DIFFERENTIATE PRINTERS AND
SCANNERS-
1. Functionality: The primary difference between printers and scanners is their function.
Printers are used to create hard copies of digital documents or images, while scanners
are used to create digital copies of physical documents or images.
2. Output: Printers produce physical output in the form of a printed document or image,
while scanners produce digital output in the form of a digital image or file.
3. Types of Output: Printers can produce a wide range of outputs including text, images,
graphics, and photos, whereas scanners are primarily used to capture images of
documents or photos.
4. Resolution: Printers and scanners have different resolution capabilities. Printers can
produce high-quality outputs with resolutions ranging from 300 to 2400 DPI (dots per
inch) or more, while scanners can capture images with resolutions ranging from 300
to 4800 DPI or more.
5. Color Depth: Printers and scanners also have different color depth capabilities.
Printers can print in a variety of color modes including RGB and CMYK, while
scanners can capture images in RGB, CMYK, grayscale, and black and white.
7. Cost: The cost of printers and scanners can vary widely, depending on their features
and capabilities. Printers can range from low-cost inkjet models to high-end laser
printers, while scanners can range from affordable flatbed scanners to high-end drum
scanners.
Overall, while there may be some overlap in features between printers and scanners, their
primary functions and outputs differ, and they are optimized for different types of document
management and reproduction needs.

CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, printers and scanners are two different types of devices that serve distinct
purposes. Printers are used to produce hard copies of digital files onto paper or other media,
while scanners are used to capture images or documents in digital format. Printers are
typically measured by their DPI resolution, while scanners are measured by their PPI
resolution and color depth. Printers can be connected to a computer or other devices via USB,
Wi-Fi, or Ethernet, while scanners are usually connected via USB or Wi-Fi. Both printers and
scanners come in various sizes and can be affordable or expensive, depending on their
features.
Overall, the choice between a printer and a scanner depends on the user's needs. If the user
needs to produce hard copies of digital files, a printer is the way to go. If the user needs to
digitize physical documents or images, a scanner is the better choice. However, some all-in-
one devices combine both printing and scanning functions, making them a convenient and
versatile option for users who need both capabilities.
