To my mother, Evelyn, who maintained the highest aspirations for me even when situations warranted criticism and despair. From my first day of school to my current educational endeavors her insistence that I “Make a 100” set the bar. To my love, Pam, whose belief in me.has spanned years and geographic location. Her ability to bend and not break despite the weight I place on her is truly remarkable. She needs to know that I always value her opinion regardless of what I tell her. iv Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION A Correlational Study Between the MMPI-2 and the NEO-PI-R with a Department of Social Services Referred Population By Christopher Carter Jones Doctor of Psychology Carlos Albizu University 2003 Christian DelRio, Psy.D., Chairperson Psychological instruments have been widely used in custody evaluations for over two decades, however in the last ten years a closer scrutiny, ofthe validity and suitability of these measures to address the issues involving custody litigation has begun. Two! measures often used to assess personality ate the MMPI-2 and the NEO-PI-R. While the MMPI-2 has validity measures to determine if subjects are attempting to manipulate their responses (response bias) in order to appear more psychologically well-adjusted, the NEO-PI-R does not and the developers insist there is no need. This study divides subjects referred from the Department of Children and Families, who are being assessed x Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Those with a lie scale meeting a predetermined cutoff as documented in a review of literature were placed in either a fake-good or honest-responder group. The L cutoff for faking was greater than or equal to 6 in females and greater than or equal to 7 for males. An Anova was performed to analyze(group differences between scores for the fake-good group and the honest- responder group on the five factors/of the NEO-PI-R. Only one factor, Neuroticism, was shown to have a significant between-group difference, "F(1)#=9.583, p<.003. Other factors varied little between groups. These results give evidence the NEO-PI-R is only slightly affected by response style in this population. xi Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Chapter 1 Introduction Psychological instruments have been widely used in custody evaluations for over two decades, however in the last ten years a closer scrutiny of the validity and suitability of these measures to address the issues involving custody litigation has begun. The role of forensic evaluator has come under attack by both the legal community and professionals in the field of mental health (Keith-Spiegal & Koocher, 1985; Melton, Petrila, Poythress, & Slobin, 1987; Mnookin, 1975). It is thought by some authorities that opinions given by mental health professionals in child custody litigation exceed limitations of empirically based scientific knowledge (Melton et al., 1987). Evaluators have also been criticized for using inappropriate assessment techniques and offering opinions based on irrelevant data (Brodzinsky, 1993). Weithorn and Grisso (1987) suggest that in conducting a comprehensive custody evaluation, the clinician should employ a multisource, multimethod approach. Their rationale is that with so much depending on the outcome of such evaluations, information should be confirmed by multiple sources and through multiple methods. The opinion can Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Evaluators are encouraged to include not only the parties directly involved, but to collect information from other relevant sources such as extended family members, teachers, babysitters, healthcare providers and so forth (Weithorn & Grisso, 1987). In addition to these sources clinicians often base opinions on the results of self-report questionnaires and clinician-administered psychological tests. Keilin and Bloom (1986) reported'that nearly three quarters of experienced clini¢ians routinely use psychological tests in their child custody evaluations. Two widely used/and well-researched instruments in the assessment of.personality are the NEO-Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) “and the Minnesota Mult iphasic Personality Inventory-2nd Edition (MMPI-2). The NEO-PI-R is based on the five-factor model of personality. The five- factor model is considered to be one of the more important developments in personality theory and assessment (Piedmont & Weinstein, 1993). This empirically derived model consists of five major factors of personality; Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. These factors have been shown to be Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. The NEO-PI-R, is the only commercially available measure of these dimensions. The NEO-PI-R is a 60-item questionnaire consisting of five scales or domains, each of which is divided into six subscales or facets. Items are answered on a 5-point Likert scale that ranges from 0 (strongly disagree) to 4 (strongly agree) It is intended for individuals age 16 and above. Therevare no validity scales per se for the NEO-PI-R, but subjects are asked to make a pledge that their answers are accurate and truthful. The MMPI-2 is a revision of the original MMPI that was first published in.1943 by Starke Hathaway, Ph.D. and J. Charnley McKinley, /MvDy (Graham, pg.3, 1990). The intent of the authors was to help in the diagnosis of individuals at the University of Minnesota Hospitals by providing empirically keyed scales that differentiated groups of subjects. This new approach used empirical item analysis to identify test items that differentiated between criterion groups and overcame many of the difficulties associated with earlier subjective approaches (Graham, pg. 4, 1990).
