Competitive people more prone to stress, expert says

People who are competitive are more susceptible to stress, psychologist said in an interview
yesterday.
In the forum “Kapihan sa West Avenue”, Dr. Dallen Morada, a psychologist in the Philippine General
Hospital, said that people with Type A personality have greater chances of getting stressed.
According to Morada, a person with Type A personality often exhibits competitive and impatient
behaviors, especially since they think and do more.

She also said that there are studies that support this claim.
“Studies have shown na mas mataas ang risk nila sa Type A Personality dahil sa activities. Tumataas
ang blood pressure nila at mas prone sila sa heart disease [that there is a higher risk among persons
with Type A personality because of their activities. Their blood pressure increases and they are
more prone to heart problems],” Morada said.
When a person is stressed, his body releases adrenaline, a hormone which gives a “fight or flight”
response.
As a result, a person's heart rate increases, his breathing speeds up, he sweats more frequently, and
becomes irritable.
Morada also stated that although stress is unavoidable, there are several ways to prevent it.
She said that it is important to take care of the body when experiencing stress.
Having enough sleep could also help.
"We advise sleep hygiene, like no lights. Anything na may [with] blue light... off na siya [turn it off]
one hour before bedtime," said Morada.
She also recommended to balance daily activities to reduce stress, especially for Type A
personalities.
