Table 2. Definition of art from the chapter “What is Art?” by Robert Stecker.
Table 3. Your chosen objects/files and definitions that prove that they are art works.
Once you’re done with Table 3, write your answer to these four questions in the space
provided.
1. What were the challenges you encountered in filling up Table 3? How do these
challenges relate to the many problems and limitations of the definitions given in
Stecker’s “What Is Art?” chapter? 1 point
- I am confused in some of the definitions in Table 2, which makes it hard for me to
find an art work, and I am also having difficulty in matching those definitions in Table
1. Those limitations/problems in the definitions given are the reason why I am
confused and having a hard time finding artworks that may fit those said definitions.
2. Why do you think we’ve been encountering difficulties defining the word “art”, as
compared to the sciences, for instance, where we can easily define terms such as
“photosynthesis” or “water,” without sparking much debate? 1 point
- Art is broad. It is the reason why we’re encountering difficulties in defining it. Some
of our ideas clashes which results in sparking debate among us.
3. Robert Stecker concludes that art is not one thing; therefore, art cannot be defined by
just one definition. Do you agree? Explain your answer. 1 point
- Yes, as art encompasses many factors, it is only natural that art cannot be defined by
just one definition. Art is also dynamic; it changes as time pass by thus its definition
will also not stick to only one definition.
4. After this activity, would you change anything about your initial definition of the word
“art”? What would it now be? Explain your answer. 1 point
- I will not change my initial definition but I will add some more. Art, aside from being
an expression, is also an aesthetic definition. It evokes one’s aesthetic sense.
