EGO STATES:-

Just think back in past twenty four hours of your life...

Were there any moments during that time when you acted felt and thought like a child or you found
yourself behaving ,thinking and feeling like parents or parent figures or other occasions when your
behaviour thoughts and feelings were simply a direct here-and-now response to things happening
around you at that moment?

According to Dr. Eric Burne human exhibit three distinctive behavioural patterns

. Behaving like a parent

.Behaving like a adult

.Behaving like a child

For example Ram is a very successful doctor who is always involved with his children and always
ready for piece of advice and give guidance for their studies and struggle in life, but is very fond of
sweets and often steal them as he is strictly advised to consume sweets as he is a diabetic patient.

Here Ram is showing three distinctive patterns

1)Behaving like a child in spite of his age and education

2)Behaving like a mature doctor

3)Behaving like his own father,by helping and guiding his children

Definition of Ego States:

Ego states, which are coherent system of thoughts and feelings manifested by corresponding patterns
of behaviour.”
PHOTO PAC MODEL 1

.These 3 ego state together form the model of personality which is heart of T.A. Studies.

PAC Model:

These ego state are states are stacked circled one above the other and often labelled with initial
Capital letter,where

P=parent ego state,A=adult ego state,C-child ego state this is called first order structure and the
process of analysing an individual personality in term of ego state is called Structural Analysis.

*NB-Ego –state model functional only describe one of three different feature ie Behaviour and
feeling and thinking other two features are not included in the model.

EGO STATES:

 DR. Bern emphasized that Parents and Child are echoes of the past.In child, the behaviour’s
thoughts thoughts and feelings from the past.
 For a healthy and a balance personality ,we need all three ego-states.
1.Adults for the here and now –problem sloving.
2. Parents to fit comfortably into the society.
3.Child to have access to Spontaneity, creativity and intuitive power as we enjoy in our
childhood.

EGO GRAM:
 In year 1972,Jack Dusay developed the concept of ego gram that is an excellent tool and has
its application to understand ego states and help in developing Personality Interpersonal
relationship, counselling and training programmes.
 DEFINITION:
“Ego gram is a graphical representation on the degree in which a person makes use of the
different functional ego states”
“Ego gram is a visual representation of how individual psychic energy is distributed
throughout her functional ego states”
 Ego Gram:
The ego gram is a relation diagram ,depicting the amount of amount of energy a person’s
used externally or activity as it relates to others.
 How an Ego gram is made:
An ego gram begins by drawing a horizontal line and labelling along with its length names
and 5 main functional ego state parts(CP,NP,A,FC,AC).Further ,start the ego part that is used
most; and other relative of the time that is spent.

1. Principle of Constancy Hypothesis:

Ego grams are based on constancy hypothesis which states that the amount of
psychic energy within a person remains constant

Formula:-

CPo + NPo + Ao + ACo + FCo = Ko

(Where Ko represent a constant figure)
2. When one ego-states increases in intensity another or others must decrease in order
to compensate .the shift is psychic energy occurs so that the total amount of energy
may remain constant .
RECOGNIZING EGO-STATES:

Dr.Eric Berne suggested four different methods by which one can diagnose ego states of self and
others.

 Behavioural Diagnosis: Behaviour can be better understood by understanding the following

components which have distinctive features:
a. Words
b. Tunes
c. Gestures
d. Postures
e. Facial expressions
f. Gait and carriage
g. Breathing patterns
 Social Diagnosis: Social Diagnosis is done by analysing ego state which is evoked in a person
in response to the stimulus from an ego state of another person .this is based on the
observation that a person in a particular ego state will produce a response from a
complementary ego state in another person.
 Historical diagnosis:is done by judging the statement of the person that he replayed the
statement of the person that he replayed the behaviour that is “recalling”childhood
memory.
 Phenomenological diagnosis: is done by observing the ego state of the client while” re-
experiencing “the past at the moment oe in the present.this goes beyond merely
remembering or recalling the event, but involves person to re-experiencing the whole ego
state in full intensity.
