CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

The capital punishment is one of the controversial issues regarding

criminal sentence around the world.
Globally, the death penalty has been abolished in a big part of America,
Europe or Asia, but it’s also still applied in countries like the United States
or Japan.

Is the death penalty a just punishment?

Here there are two confronted stances. There are people who support the
capital punishment as a appropriate punishment, for example, for those
who take the lives of others.
They argue that relatives of the victims need justice and the best way to
revenge them and assure the criminal won’t kill again is by the death
penalty. In addition, it is said that it would cost governments less to execute
the criminals than to keep them in prison.

Nonetheless, I’m in favor of the majority of people, who are against capital
punishment.
Firstly, because the execution, as well as being cruel, is a violation of the
right to live. Besides, sometimes courts make mistakes, there are a lot of
cases, above all in the United States, of people sentenced to death and
executed even though after it was proven that they were innocent.
Secondly, by this and other penalties it is looked for fewer delinquents and
crimes and the death penalty is seen as the perfect way for it, but there are
a lot of studies that prove it doesn’t prevent crimes more effectively than
other sentences. And likewise the death penalty assures the culprit won’t
commit a crime again, it doesn’t give him the opportunity to regret or try
to change his behavior and life.

To sum up, I consider the death penalty an extreme, inhuman and

degrading sentence and, although it can be seen as a just sentence for the
victims, its ef cacy when it comes to prevent crimes is questionable.
Of course criminals must be punished justly, however, society shouldn’t
lower itself to the level of the criminal; instead, we should look for a way to
help these people to not commit crimes, to give them an alternative and a
second chance to change their ways.

Arguments in favor of death penalty
It’s a just punishment for people who killed someone (to pay with
his own life).
It’s the best way for victims and their relatives to get justice and
revenge.
The criminal won’t commit a crime again.
It’s more expensive to keep the criminals in prison than execute
them.
My opinion (arguments against death penalty):
It’s a violation of the right to live (according the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights).
Court can make mistakes, nd an innocent person guilty and
execute they.
It doesn’t prevent crimes more effectively than other sentences.
Then the criminals wouldn’t have the opportunity to regret and
change their ways.
It would lower us to the level of the criminal.
- Conclusion:
I don’t agree with death penalty because of all the arguments before.
