Science Study Guide

Grade 7 - February 2024

Welcome to the Science Year 7 Study Guide! This guide is designed to assist you in your
preparation for your upcoming end of term exam.

First off, Planning!

Planning your time effectively is crucial for successful studying. Here are some tips to help you
plan your study time efficiently:

1. Set specific goals: Clearly define what you want to achieve during your study sessions.
Whether it's completing a chapter, mastering a particular concept, or finishing a set of practice
questions, having specific goals will help you stay focused and motivated.

2. Prioritize tasks: Identify the most important and urgent tasks and prioritize them accordingly.
Start with the subjects or topics that require more attention or those with approaching deadlines
or exams. This way, you can allocate more time and energy to the areas that need it the most.

3. Create a study schedule: Develop a schedule that incorporates dedicated study time for each
subject or topic. Determine the most productive times of the day when you are alert and
focused, and allocate those periods for studying complex or challenging material. Be realistic
when planning, considering other commitments and activities in your daily routine.

4. Break it down: Break your study sessions into smaller, manageable chunks. Shorter study
sessions of 30-45 minutes with regular breaks are often more effective than long, uninterrupted
study marathons. Plan breaks of 5-10 minutes between sessions to recharge your mind and
maintain concentration.

5. Avoid multitasking: Focus on one task at a time to maximize your productivity. Multitasking
can lead to divided attention and reduced efficiency. Complete one task before moving on to the
next to ensure better comprehension and retention of the material.
6. Eliminate distractions: Minimize distractions during your study time. Find a quiet and
comfortable study environment, turn off or silence your phone, and avoid accessing social
media or other websites that may tempt you away from your studies. Create a conducive
atmosphere that promotes concentration and minimizes interruptions.

7. Review and revise: Allocate regular study sessions for review and revision of previously
learned material. Regularly revisit and reinforce concepts to ensure long-term retention. Spacing
out your review sessions over time is more effective than cramming all the information at once.

8. Be flexible and adaptable: Recognize that unexpected events or changes in plans may occur.
Be flexible with your study schedule and adjust it accordingly. Embrace a growth mindset and
view challenges as opportunities for growth and improvement.

9. Take care of yourself: Remember to prioritize self-care during your study plan. Get enough
sleep, eat nutritious meals, and engage in physical activity. Taking care of your well-being will
enhance your focus, concentration, and overall cognitive abilities.

10. Seek support when needed: If you find yourself struggling with certain concepts or topics,
don't hesitate to seek help from your teachers, classmates, or online resources. Collaboration
and assistance can accelerate your learning and understanding.

By implementing these strategies and developing a consistent study routine, you can effectively
manage your time and optimize your study sessions. Remember to stay motivated, stay
organized, and maintain a balanced approach to your studies

Here’s a recommended study guide that you can use:

Topic Recommended time needed to review this

topic

unit 1: cells 2-3 hours

unit 2: materials and their structures 3-4 hours

unit 3: forces and energy 6 hours

unit 5: properties of materials 3 hours

unit 1: respiration 5 hours

unit 2: properties of materials 3 hours

Diet and nutrition 3 hours

Digestive system 4 hours

Muscles and movement 3 hours

Scientific inquiry skills 2 hours

Please note that these time allocations are approximate and can be adjusted based on your
individual needs and understanding of the topics. Additionally, depending on your familiarity with
each objective, you may need more or less time.

Remember to first review the topic (using your study notes), revise important vocabulary and
any other areas you need to focus on, and then follow that by practicing questions (using your
classified past paper booklets, revision packs, and quizzes)

2
To help feel more confident, use the below list to make that you have
covered all the necessary objectives:

Unit 1. Cells: (2-3 hours)

- Review the structure and functions of plant and animal cells.
- Recall the different specialised cells as discussed in class. Identify their functions and
adaptations
- Review the major organs and their functions in the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory
systems.
- Review cellular organisation.

Unit 2. Materials and their structure: (3-4 hours)

- Review the concept of materials and their importance in everyday life.
- Identify the three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) and the arrangement of
their atoms.
- Explain the changes between the 3 states of matter, using the particle theory
- Identify the main stages in the water cycle.
- Study the basic atomic structure
- Study the properties and characteristics of elements, compounds, mixtures, and
solutions. (2-3 hours)
- Review the periodic table. (learn symbols of first 20 elements, identify periods and
groups, locate metals and non-metals).
- Practice naming compounds and identifying different atoms in formulae. Also, counting
how many atoms are found in a formula

Unit 3. Forces and Energy: (6 hours)

- Identify different types of forces, force arrows, and resultant forces.
- Review the difference between mass and weight.
- Explain the formation of the solar system
- Explain what happens to motion in space vs. the Earth’s atmosphere
- Review types (what causes them, the time difference between each type of tide, and
identify the different types)
- Identify different types of energy and energy changes

Unit 5. Properties of Materials: (3 hours)

- Recall the properties of metals and non-metals
- Define alloys, and describe the difference between a pure metal and an alloy

3
Book 8:

Unit 1. Respiration: (5 hours)

- Review the pathway of air inside the human body.
- Identify the main organs in the respiratory system and mention their functions.
- Define diffusion
