Reader's Advisory Exercise

Scenario 3: You are working at the reference desk at an academic library where there is a leisure
reading collection. A student approaches the desk and asks "I really like the Lord of the Rings
trilogy, but I want to read more books by Black authors. Can you tell me what else I could
read?" Find 3. For each, provide a sentence or two on why you chose it. In a few sentences,
explain what you did to find these suggestions.

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna. This book I chose is based on people who read another book
Children of Blood and Bone. This book would be great as it's a fantasy by a black author and the
mystical tone is much closer to books like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also, this is the author's
first novel would love to hear the readers' reaction to it. I found this book as a recommendation
after searching in Goodreads for Children of Blood and Bone after google searching for number
one fantasy books by black authors.

Daughters Of Nri by Reni K Amayo – I choose this book based on the trials and tribulations of
the main character as well the plot focuses on war and family in a fantasy world also by a black
author and it's featured in the new author section of the library. This novel is also available at
multiple locations near it we don't have any copies. I searched in Worldcat for African fiction
after typing in African fantasy no results. Once the page gave results it was too many listings. I
then added in young adult fantasy and read some of the synopsis of some of the books to find
this one.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi- I chose this because it's by a black author and it
was on the best sellers list in 2018 for fantasy. This book's fantasy is rooted in western African
spiritual culture. It also has lots of great reviews on Goodreads and is highly recommended for
readers interested in fantasy books with drama, war, and adventure. All ideas featured Tolkien's
novels. I found this book searching Google for the best sellers of fiction from black authors. I
went through the list and read some of the plots this book matched more to what I believe the
patron is looking for. I then copy-pasted the title into Goodreads to read some of the reviews and
see how many stars it had.
