This document provides solutions to two problems for an assignment in machine design. The first problem involves designing a journal bearing for a shaft that rotates at 1,200 rpm, applies a 4.45 kN load, and uses SAE 20 oil at 60 degrees Celsius. The solution determines the bearing's length and diameter and checks if the oil film thickness satisfies a criterion. The second problem involves proposing a detailed 2D drawing of a gear-reduction unit, including housing, bearings, gears, shaft, and other parts.

Proportions of L/D 1 are desired. SAE 20 oil is to be used, and the average film temperature is expected to be 60 o C. (a) Determine appropriate values for L and D. (b) Determine values of c corresponding to the two edges of the optimum zone in Fig. 13.13. (c) Does the value of c for minimum friction satisfy Trumpler’s criterion for minimal acceptable thickness (Eqn. 13.15 in Juvinall and Marshek)?

Problem 2 Open-ended design problem: A gear-reduction unit uses the countershaft overly simplified in the figure below. Propose a detailed 2-D drawing of what the final assembly might look like, including the housing near the bearings, the bearings, the gears, the shaft and the mounting parts as necessary. Note that no sizing is required, just a drawing, that does not need to be to scale.

Solution Watch out for the following (not an exhaustive list): Gear hub proportions, keys and keyways required, setscrews, for gear positioning, steps or spacers between components, bearing mounting (one fixed, the other one floating), retaining rings on the shaft behind bearings, shape of housing near bearings. Caps may be necessary at both ends of the shaft. Below is one of many possibilities:
