MARIA PAOLA MERLONI

that turn pink at sunset, the
beautiful Italian resort of Cortina
d’Ampezzo is known as “the pearl
of the Dolomites”.
It’s just the place to enjoy some
dolce vita in the snow, and that’s
exactly what the country’s fore-
most families have been doing
since the 1960s, returning year
after year to its immaculate slopes
and legendary après-ski spots such
as El Camineto and El Toulà.
One of its greatest fans, former
Italian senator and scion of the
Merloni business dynasty Maria
Paola Merloni, tells us she’s been
visiting since she was a little girl.
“I’ve always been in love with this
valley,” she says.

Maria Paola, when did you first

come to Cortina?
“When I was six, so I’ve been
coming for over 50 years. I put on
my first skis here. For me, the
place has always had a wonderful
atmosphere. I’ve always been in
love with this valley, these mountains
and their colours. As soon as I
arrive, I feel cherished, carefree.
“I admit that Cortina has

very international, nor easily
accessible. But that’s part of its
charm and character.”
What can you tell us about this
apartment?

renovated it to make it lighter and
more suited to our lifestyle today.”
How would you describe the
apartment’s decor?
“I wanted the interior to be
sophisticated, cosy, bright, easy to
live in and welcoming for friends.
So I modernised it, but keeping
the mountain ambience.
“I kept some original features,
like the fireplace, but I opened up
the space because I wanted every
corner to be infused with the
amazing natural light we have

and cushions to make the place

And the art and objets

“I have lots of works by 20th- and
21st-century artists, including
Fabrizio Braghieri’s Heartt and

RAYE
THE R’N’B STAR CONQUERS THE CHARTS AND
THE BRITS AFTER FIGHTING BACK FROM REJECTION
T he 2024 Brit Awards could be
summed up in one name: Raye.
The 26-year-old R’n’B star swept the
board at the British music industry’s
annual celebration, breaking the
record for the most Brits won at a
ceremony with her haul of six awards,
trumping previous joint record-
holders Harry Styles, Adele and Blur.
Her success came only three years
after she quit her record label, and
just days after the ceremony, it was
announced that her songs have been
streamed five billion times since her
debut album was released last year.
No one can believe how far Raye,
real name Rachel Agatha Keen, has
come – least of all the woman herself.
“I do feel like a new artist. I got to
start again,” she told the crowd at
London’s O2 arena as she picked
up her award for Best New
Artist. “The artist I was three
years ago would not believe
what she’s seeing today. I’m my
own boss now; I’m in control.”
The star was born in South
London to mum Sarah, who is of
Ghanaian-Swiss heritage, and
Yorkshire-born father Paul. She
first made her mark aged eight at
her local school in Croydon.

have been aged 13 and 14 at the time.
“It was clear she had a raw natural
talent, with a determination to
succeed. Her vocal abilities, even at
that young age, were astounding –
well beyond those of her peers. She
was musically gifted in songwriting
and performing.
“Rachel was friendly and popular in
school. She was pleasant to everybody.
She always demonstrated the highest
values of integrity and tried her best.
It’s fantastic to see the success she’s
building – it’s clearly down to her hard-
working attitude and determination.”

REBEL WITH A CAUSE

At 14, the singer left Woodcote to
take a place at the Brit School, whose
alumni include Adele, Jessie J and
Leona Lewis, but quit after two years.
“It’s not in my nature to follow
rules,” she has said. “I didn’t get on
with them in school and I don’t
understand why they exist in music.
“I love songs that don’t do what
you expect them to. For me, it’s
liberating to write something
sonically different every time that
doesn’t sound like anyone else.
Otherwise, what’s the point?”
However, she enjoyed developing
her love of music while attending
church with her family each week.
‘It’s not in my nature to follow rules.

P enelope Chilvers’s first trip to India was as

spellbinding and magical as she hoped it
would be.
The British designer, whose footwear is beloved
of the Princess of Wales, spent ten days exploring An Indian tiger at the Suján

I’ll get obsessed. I didn’t want to come home,”
she says in our exclusive interview.
In fact, Penelope, whose celebrity clients
include Amal Clooney, Cate Blanchett and
Pippa Middleton, was so inspired by the richness
and colours of the landscape and the people
she met that she created two designs, a slipper
and a riding boot, for the conservation-focused
safari camps where she stayed.

WILDLIFE AND WONDER

Every morning and evening, when the sun was
lower in the sky, she would go for a ride on one
of the camp’s native Marwari horses and take in
the wilderness.
“We watched the sun rise over the Aravalli
mountain range and I felt at one with this
amazing landscape. I saw a leopard – he was
sitting on a rock, just watching us – and if you
looked carefully through your binoculars, you
could see a crocodile sunning itself on the sand.
It was like nothing I’d ever seen before.”
One evening, she adds, a party was held for 29
the camp guests. “We went out in Jeeps

incredible local musicians played a
wonderful array of instruments
that I’d never seen before.”
The designer’s trip wasn’t just
for pleasure; following in the
footsteps of the Prince and
Princess of Wales, Penelope is a
champion of sustainability and
every year supports conservation
initiatives through her brand.
This year, she is working with
Suján, the first positive-impact
safari camp of its kind in India,
founded in 2001 by entrepreneur
Jaisal Singh, who runs it with his
wife Anjali.
Suján has three conservation-
focused wilderness camps in
Rajasthan: Jawai, the Serai and
Sher Bagh in Ranthambore
National Park, which is renowned
for Indian tigers that once roamed
across Asia in their hundreds of
thousands but have lost more than
93% of their natural range.

A WORLD OF INSPIRATION
In a special collaboration,
Penelope has co-designed with
Anjali a Suján riding boot, inspired
by the black and red colour palette
of the Rabari tribe of Jawai, and a
green velvet tiger-print slipper. Ten
per cent of sales will be donated to
Suján’s tiger conservation and
rewilding projects.
“What was so fascinating for me
as a designer is the Indian love of
decoration, whether it’s carved out
of stone, or printing textiles, or
painting their vehicles,” she says.
“And the way they dress, the
colours of the saris and the
turbans, is beautiful.
“We went to Jaisalmer, a
fascinating old city, and I popped
into a local shoe shop and talked
shoes. The shops were charming
and sometimes the entrance
would be blocked because there’d
be a cow poking its head in.
“I love craft and the artisan
world and my trips and
collaborations usually come
through my interest in local
craftsmanship from around the
world. I’ve been to Argentina, for
instance, to talk to the gaucho
community about their riding
boots, and I’ve also been up to
Northern Europe to meet the
Sami to find out about how they

their feet warm.”
Penelope set up her footwear

lmost two months after
undergoing major abdominal
surgery, the Princess of Wales
appears to be back on her feet and
well on the road to recovery, with
her mother at her side.
Carole Middleton has been a
constant presence since Kate, 42,
returned home from hospital in
January and it seems the pair’s
close relationship has become
even stronger in the Princess’s
hour of need.
Last week, Kate was seen for the
first time since her operation as
she and Carole went for a drive
near her home on the Windsor
estate. Wearing dark glasses and
with her hair hanging loose, she
was spotted in the passenger seat
of a 4WD Audi in Windsor, with
Carole at the wheel. It is thought
they may have been returning
home after dropping off
Kate’s three children at nearby
Lambrook School.

‘SHE WILL BE BACK’

The last time Kate had been seen
in public was on Christmas Day, at
church in Sandringham, and
her appearance ended weeks of
fevered speculation about her.
However, her uncle Gar y
Goldsmith has assured the public
she is in good hands, saying: “She’s
amazing. She will be back; of
course she will.”
Businessman Gar y, who is
Carole’s younger brother, talked
about his niece on Celebrity Big

recovering at the hospital.
Kensington Palace said at the

STARRING IN THEIR OWN LOVE STORY
LUPITA NYONG’O AND JOSHUA JACKSON
MAKE WAVES ON A ROMANTIC HOLIDAY IN MEXICO
S miling as they stroll hand in hand on
Mexico’s Pacific coast, Lupita Nyong’o and
Joshua Jackson left no one in any doubt that they
are starring in their own love story.
Five months after romance rumours started
swirling, the couple didn’t hide their affection
for each other on a trip to Puerto Vallarta for
Lupita’s 41st birthday.
Sharing a tender embrace, Lupita gently
ruffled 45-year-old Joshua’s hair as she leant in
for a kiss, the waves lapping around their feet.
It’s clear new love suits the Black Panther
actress, and her radiant smile was matched by
that of former Dawson’s Creekeek star Joshua, who
looked on cloud nine taking hold of her hand.
“They looked madly in love, like they just
couldn’t get enough of one another,” an
onlooker said.

HOLLYWOOD HOTSPOT
Joshua reportedly marked Lupita’s special day by
arranging a bouquet of flowers and a balloon
display in their hotel room, as well as a spot of
relaxation and pampering in the venue’s spa.
It’s little wonder the lovebirds chose Puerto
Vallarta for their trip – its beautiful beaches,
lively nightlife and stunning views of the Sierra
Madre mountains have made it a long-standing
hit with celebrities from Elizabeth Taylor and
Richard Burton to Britney Spears.
Lupita and Joshua were first linked last
October, when they were photographed together
at a Janelle Monáe concert in Los Angeles.
Their romance follows a period of emotional
upheaval for each of them. In September 2023,
Joshua separated from his wife of three years,
Jodie Turner-Smith, with whom he has daughter
Juno, four next month. She filed for divorce at
the beginning of the following month, citing
“irreconcilable differences”.
Also in October, Oscar-winning actress Lupita
announced on Instagram that she had broken
up with TV host Selema Masekela, writing that
she could “no longer trust” him and was in
“a season of heartbreak”. H

The Princess wore this navy-

Somerville, during the 1988
royal tour of Australia.
She was photographed in
the outfit during a visit to the
Victorian College of the Arts
in Melbourne, where she
stunned onlookers by taking
her seat behind a piano and
launching into Rachmaninov’s
Piano Concerto No. 2.
She also provided a special
moment for Anwar Hussein,
who documented the tour.
“This photo of Princess
Diana is a particularly special
one for my father,” Samir
says. “He was in a big hall in
Australia and was positioned
by the press-office team
to sit ten, maybe 15 rows
behind Diana.
“He said, quite loudly: ‘What
the hell have you brought us
here to photograph? Do you
expect us to take pictures of
her back?’
“Diana heard and looked

Diana’s caring and emotional side was

often on display during engagements,
and never more so than when she visited
Mother Teresa’s Kalighat Home for the
Dying Destitutes in Kolkata, India in
February 1992.

she was shown around the home by
her second-in-charge, Sister Lynne

“Not only was the hospice very damp,
dark and hot, but one thing you cannot
tell from this photograph is that the smell
of death was heavy in the air,” Samir says.
“Most people would have left as fast as
they could, but Diana showed who she
really was by staying and caressing these
dying souls.
“Her escort was very surprised when
Diana insisted on holding hands with as
many individuals as she could and taking
her time with them.
“For some, she may have been their 51

Diana was often

This image was taken in
November 1995 as she was
arriving at the upmarket
Chelsea Harbour Club in
West London, one of her
favourite places to exercise
and where she was
regularly photographed.
“My father had
mentioned to Diana that he
wanted everyone to see
how health-conscious she
was and to be inspired by
her,” Samir says. “She
agreed, so he snapped

revenge – at least it was here,
when Diana memorably
wore this gown by Christina
Stambolian (above) for an
engagement at the Serpentine
Gallery in London’s Hyde Park
in June 1994.
The event was held on the
same night that her estranged
husband admitted, during a
TV interview with Jonathan
Dimbleby, to having had an
affair during their marriage
with his now wife, Camilla
Parker Bowles.
Diana had bought the dress
in 1991, telling the designer: “I
want a special dress for a
special occasion. It doesn’t
matter if it’s short or long. It
has to be something special.”
And it was.
“Instead of hiding in
humiliation, Diana stepped
out publicly, wore her
celebrated ‘revenge dress’
and looked like a million

‘The attention her walk and this photograph brought
to the cause of banning landmines was enormous’

Diana visited Angola as a guest of

the International Red Cross in
January 1997.
The Southern African nation had
been engulfed in a civil war for over
two decades and, although she came
to Huambo during a brief moment of
peace, the country had been left
with more than 15 million hidden
landmines, many of which were
located near towns and villages.

for a ban on landmines. Not
surprisingly, the image (right) was
reprinted around the world.
“This was a massive and politically
charged situation, as many
politicians and powerful corporations
that profited from the sale of
landmines around the world were
opposed to her stance,” Zak says.
“The attention her walk and this
photograph brought to the cause
was so enormous that, to date, more
than 160 countries have signed
and become parties to the United
Nations’ mine ban treaty.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
BOUNCING BACK FROM
PERSONAL CRISES
ERIKA JAYNE
REALITY STAR ON
HER TRIUMPHANT
RETURN TO THE
LAS VEGAS STAGE
T here is much, much more to Erika Jayne
than being a California blonde. Although
the sassy singer first found fame on The Real
Hills, she maintained her
Housewives of Beverly Hills,
performing career and even landed a leading
role on Broadway.
The steely determination that has won her
legions of fans has also seen the 52-year-old
through recent personal crises, after she
divorced her powerful lawyer husband Tom
Girardi and became embroiled in multiple
lawsuits after it was alleged that he had
embezzled millions from his clients.
That stoic attitude shines through in a new
two-hour documentary on Hayu that follows the
star as she prepares for a residency in Las Vegas.
Erika Jayne: Bet It All on Blonde lets fans see even
further inside her life as she takes on a series of
concerts that represent a huge milestone for
her, coming at such a trying time in her life.
“The Las Vegas shows were triumphant on a
personal and a professional level, but also
almost on a spiritual soul level, because I dug
deep,” she tells hello! in an exclusive interview.
“My whole goal is to move forward in life. I
had to overcome my own negative loop of self-
doubt, so for me, that was a total win.”

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
The experience wasn’t without its challenges,
however. As tensions rose behind the scenes
when rehearsals didn’t go as planned, there
were times she wished the camera crew would
leave her alone.
“It’s very difficult to learn, knowing that
you’re being watched,” she says. “It was a
challenge to focus and not be distracted. You
literally just have to put one foot in front of the
other; some days were better than others. But
I’ve been here many times before. I know how to
perform – this is what I do.”
Putting on the show did provide a distraction
to Erika, who has been dealing with the fallout
of Tom’s legal issues – in respect of which, she
denies all wrongdoing – since she filed for
divorce in November 2020 after 21 years of
marriage. Even then, she says, she wasn’t able
to get away from it all.
“It was a distraction until the personal
problems showed up at the front door, like
when I was confronted at night-time with the
person working on Tom’s case. It’s tough to be
reminded, and that was what stole the joy,
because I’ve always used my shows as a beautiful
place of full expression,” she says.
Tom, 84, is due to go on trial in Los
Angeles in May (he has pleaded not guilty).

‘DUNE’ LEADING MAN
TIMOTHEE
CHALAMET
ON FAME, FANS AND
WORKING WITH FRIENDS
T hey’ve been pulling out the fashion stops on red
carpets all over the world for their spectacular new
futuristic fantasy epic Dune: Part Two,
Two, as well as at this
year’s star-packed awards celebrations.
But according to the film’s leading man Timothée
Chalamet, he and his co-stars Zendaya, Florence Pugh
and Austin Butler are anything but party animals away
from the cameras.
“We are honestly the tamest bunch,” says the
28-year-old American-French star, when asked what it
was like for the super-cool quartet, hanging out
between shooting. “It wasn’t wild parties or anything
like that; more like us having tea than having a party.”
While British-born Florence and Elvis actor Austin
are new to the franchise, the experience saw Timothée
reunited with his good friend Zendaya, with whom he
starred in the first Dune film.
This time, there is romance between their
characters, Paul Atreides and the Fremen warrior
Chani, which Timothée says was “great for the
character, but kind of weird because we have been
friends for a long time. But we just tried to make it like
any other day at work.”
Certainly, the duo had no difficulty capturing the
special chemistry that director Denis Villeneuve had
declared utterly crucial to the new film.
“Z [Zendaya] makes it easy,” says Timothée. “She is
so great to work with, so talented and so generous as a
performer. We’re both the same age so we have always
kind of stuck together. Growing up, I watched her on
the Disney Channel, so it still feels kind of weird to
find myself working with her.
“Paul and Chani’s storyline is such a beautiful part
of Dune: Part Two, so we got to hang out a lot more
this time which was great.”

OFF-SCREEN ROMANCES
In real life, Timothée has been linked to Lily-Rose
Depp and Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon and
has been dating beauty mogul Kylie Jenner. They have
been spotted getting cosy at a number of events,
including the Golden Globes, although rumours were
swirling last week that the pair had split.
Since shooting to fame in 2017’s romantic drama
Call Me by Your Name, Name , for which he was Oscar
nominated, Timothée has become one of the most
sought-after actors in the business. But he takes the
fame that comes with big-screen glory in his stride.
“It’s not something I think about too much,” says
the Wonka
onka star. “I haven’t had the kind of destabilising
experience other people have. I do have people
coming up to me, but it’s never been a problem.
“Right now, it’s Dunee or Wonka a [they want to talk
about] but a lot of the time it’s been Call Me by Your

that as an artist.”
So, what’s next? “I feel like I have been lucky and I
hope I stay lucky and that I can keep working with
great directors and the amazing actors I have over the
past few years. I just want to keep challenging myself
and to keep pushing the bar.
“I’m excited to try and do the unexpected. I’m living
my dream and just trying to stay present, enjoy the
72 moment and to be grateful.” H

TACKLING AN ARCTIC CIRCLE TREK FOR COMIC RELIEF
LAURA WHITMORE AND ALEX SCOTT

Vicky Pattison – take a breather during their epic 50km trek for Comic Relief, before adopting
some reindeer chic by donning the charity’s famous red noses (below)

“We were skiing across a frozen lake and we

heard this cracking noise – even our crew
looked scared,” recalls Laura as she catches up
with hello! after her once-in-a-lifetime journey
with former footballer Alex Scott, entrepreneur
Sara Davies and reality star Vicky Pattison.
“We had to separate because there was too
much weight in one space. It’s situations like that
when you realise you can’t control what happens.”
Despite such dicey moments, the T V
presenter is delighted to have completed Comic
Relief’s first all-female celebrity challenge.
During four days in February, the team trekked,
cross-country skied and rode fat-bikes across 30
miles of the Arctic region’s punishing terrain.
“I knew it would be a real challenge, but I
wasn’t quite prepared for just how harsh the
conditions would be,” former Lioness Alex says.
The escapade was certainly a bonding
experience. “I got told to take my socks off and
put my feet in Sara’s armpits to keep warm,”
Laura says. “I’d only just met her!”

TOUGHING IT OUT
Camping at -20°C posed a physical challenge,
but the mental test was just as hard.
“I’m used to travelling for work, but it was the
first time I’d had no contact with my family; I
didn’t realise how hard I’d find that,” Laura says.
The first thing she did on completing the
challenge – besides calling her presenter husband
Iain Stirling and their daughter, who turns three
this month – was “tuck into a cheese sandwich”.
And Laura, who has recorded her adventure
in new BBC1 documentary Snow Going Back:
ctic, has strong memories of

what motivated her during the toughest times.
Before the trip, she met Helen, a woman who
was helped by – and now works for – Comic Relief-

“I thought of women who have got through
life-changing situations,” she says. “Every time
we were cold or hungry, it represented the
struggles that so many families face.” H

CELEBRATING HOLLYWOOD’S ‘DISRUPTORS’
LIVIA FIRTH
IS JOINED BY HER A-LIST FRIENDS AT THIS YEAR’S
STAR-STUDDED GREEN CARPET FASHION AWARDS
A red-carpet event in Hollywood
during Oscars week is
guaranteed to bring a stellar line-up
of glamour.
But when Italian activist and
businesswoman Livia Firth gathered a
host of A-listers for the Green Carpet
Fashion Awards, the meaning behind
the beautiful looks mattered more.
“What makes me happy is when I
see people coming together. We need
a lot of kindness and togetherness
right now,” Livia, 54, told hello!
at her annual ceremony, which
unites the power of fashion and
entertainment for positive
transformation in the world.
“We’re all disruptors,” she added.
“In a very simple way, we have the
desire to change the world. We’re
activists and we want to do things
better and with respect.”
Also joining Livia at the

Fresh from showcasing spectacular

She posed for photographers in a
crocodile-print chiffon gown with

spring/summer 2011 collection.
Zendaya’s co-chairs included
singer Annie Lennox, who wore a
T-shirt saying: “Global Feminist”.
“I would do anything for Livia,” the
former Eurythmics star told us. “I
think it’s absolutely remarkable to see
what she has accomplished.
“Livia’s power is that she has
positivity on steroids; that she’s able
to convene people from all walks of
life and bring a deep understanding
and passion about climate justice, the
fashion industry, ecology – all of it.”
Also prominent on the guest list
was film-maker Trudie Styler, who
said: “Livia stops at nothing to get her

DS & Durga Bistro Waters is quite

esigner Savannah Miller cut her
teeth working with leading lights
such as Alexander McQueen and
Matthew Williamson before going
on to create her own
contemporary label, Twenty8Twelve, alongside
her younger sister, actress Sienna.
Now a prominent figure in the bridal industry,
thanks to her elegant, understated eponymous
line, Savannah is back at the ready-to-wear helm,
creating everyday clothing for modern women on
the go.
The aim of Vivere – an Italian verb meaning
“to live” – is to provide wardrobe building blocks
to be worn season after season: uncomplicated
pieces that can switch seamlessly from workwear
to eveningwear.
Here, we catch up with the 45-year-old mum of
three to find out more about her latest venture.

Savannah, tell us about Vivere and why you

stepped back into the world of ready-to-wear…
“I haven’t ever really stepped out, as I’ve been in
collaboration with Next and Debenhams since the
Twenty8Twelve days. Vivere is a company I part-
own, so it’s very different in its nature, because
I’m much more hands-on, which I love.
“I started the company with my business
partners because I was in search of the perfect
working wardrobe – accessible in price,
responsibly made and subtly fashion-forward.
“When I’m working, particularly at selling time
for my bridal brand, I like to have a uniform of
sorts; one that will perform for me and make me
feel well presented but comfortable and cool.
“The high-street tailoring I was buying wasn’t
standing the test of time and the alternatives were
ridiculously expensive. I’m thrilled to have found
a solution to this conundrum and excited to be
growing the brand with these objectives in mind.”

Are you enjoying creating everyday clothing again?

“It’s super exciting because I get to wear and
enjoy my designs in my day-to-day life. The
collection makes me feel really good when I wear
it and that was my driving force.”

Where do you find inspiration?

“At the moment, I’m loving imagery from the 1990s
of early minimalist styling and effortless tailoring
where women are borrowing blazers from men.
That said, I always love the juxtaposition of the hard
with the soft and the feminine with the masculine,
so I seek to add those elements to my collections.
“My goal in all of my design work is to make
women feel empowered and incredible, so women
are always my first point of inspiration.”

How do you envision your ideal customer?

Savannah Miller launches her new “The Vivere woman appreciates an effortless
ready-to-wear collection with comfort, aesthetic. She’s a thoughtful purchaser who likes a
simple and confident approach to dressing. She
quality and timeless elegance in mind seeks quality and appreciates detail and is defined
by a sense of relaxed, timeless elegance.”

What’s your hero piece from the collection?

“The Sadie coat was a big hit for our autumn/
winter launch, as well as our Dylan and Tyler
trouser suit and Arlo jumper. Our summer clothes
have just landed in stores and so far, the Romy

sky blues. It’s been fun not just to default to the
classic winter colours of navy, black and grey.
“I love listening to my customers’ feedback
and understanding what they’re loving about the
collection. I’m most excited about the

Christmas party season. By some
o make miracle, I’ve managed to source an
wered incredible rust sparkle fabric that is
sustainable – most sparkle is made with
edible’ plastic, so this was a huge win for me.”

What is your brand’s ethos and how important is

sustainability to you?
“We strive to be as responsible as we can with
every design decision – responsible for the
people making our clothes as well as the impact
they will have on the planet.
“We design with longevity in mind; these
clothes adhere to our name, which translates as
‘for life’, so nothing is overly trend-driven. It is
my intention that these clothes will stand the test
of time in design and quality. We also do small
production runs to minimise waste.”

What’s next in the pipeline for Vivere?

“We’re expanding our stockists and hope to be
stocked in multiple stores in the UK as well as
internationally by autumn/winter 2024. We are
also planning some pop-ups soon.”
