tells new how dodging her smear test appointments
could have cost her everything
S
he’s known for being
outrageous, feisty and
straight-talking. But Real
Housewives Of Cheshire
star Ester Dee has laid bare her
vulnerable side as she recovers
from a cancer scare following
years of failing to attend routine
smear tests.  completely devastated. I called
Speaking exclusively to new,
the Czech-born mum-of-one
revealed that she’s furious
with herself for putting off the
potentially life-saving screening
for so long. And having recently
undergone surgery to remove
pre-cancerous cells from her
cervix, she knows now she’s
had a lucky escape.
“It’s been horrendous,” says
Ester, 37, who joined the RHOC
cast in 2016 before quitting the
ITVBe show last summer. “I’ve
been an idiot with my health,
putting my life at risk.
“I’ve been invited for a smear
test numerous times but have
always ignored the letters
thinking there was no family
history of cancer, that nothing

could happen to me and that I
was invincible.
“I didn’t want the
inconvenience of going to the
appointment or the discomfort of
the procedure itself. I hate myself
for not listening to my mum who
would always tell me to go and

Every woman between the
ages of 25 and 64 is invited for
regular NHS cervical screening,
but despite several prominent
public health campaigns, Ester
didn’t book an appointment
until she started to experience
some worrying symptoms three
months ago.  Ester’s fears were realised

she noticed a lot of watery
discharge and an unpleasant
odour and was shocked to
discover they could all be signs
of cervical cancer. 
“I Googled it and immediately
started panicking that I was
going to die,” she says. “I
thought of my little girl and cried
to my mum saying how could I
have been so stupid. I just felt
the doctor and they made me
an emergency appointment for
a smear test which I had the
next day.
“Afterwards, I couldn’t
believe I’d been avoiding
something that was over within
less than a minute. Yes, it’s a bit
uncomfortable but you can take
some paracetamol beforehand
which helps with that. And when
it could literally save your life,
it’s worth it.”
Cervical cancer kills around
850 women in the UK a year and
experts say almost every death
is preventable. Big Brother
star Jade Goody died from the
disease in 2009 after missing a
smear appointment and slipping
through the net. Smear tests take
a sample of cells from the cervix
and screen them for HPV, a virus
that can cause cancer.

Thankfully, the biopsy was clear,
but doctors still felt the cells
were concerning enough to
recommend removing them,
which Ester had done earlier
this month.
“It was mildly painful and
scary but I’m relieved they’ve
gone,” she says. “As long as I
don’t hear anything else from the
hospital, I go back in six months
for another smear test. They’re
going to monitor me for a couple
of years as I’m at a greater risk
of developing cancer.
“It has been horrible, but I
honestly feel like one of the lucky
ones. I can’t bear to think about
what might have happened if I’d
carried on not getting tested.”
‘I’m trying to appreciate
everything good in my life’
Ester is sharing her story in
the hope that it might encourage
more women to take up their
smears. Last year, smear testing
rates dropped to their lowest
ever level with just 70% of
eligible women going for their
check-up. Research by the
charity Jo’s Trust found the
most common reason for young
women not attending is feeling
scared and embarrassed at the
thought of going.
Ester issued a direct appeal
to anyone who might be putting
off their smear and urged them to
make an appointment. “Please,
please don’t ignore your letter.
Don’t be an idiot like me. We
are all human and cancer can
happen to anyone. If reading the
story of this crazy woman from
the Czech Republic helps even
one person, then I’ll be happy. 
“No one knows for sure
what’s going on inside of them
and these sorts of cancers can
be caught before they’ve had
a chance to develop. I want
everyone to be in this world
for as long as possible so
please, just go.”

reassess a lot of her lifestyle. “It
puts everything in perspective.
I felt so helpless, so I want to
change the things I can control.
I eat too much red meat which
I’m now cutting back on. There
will be no more chocolate or
doughnuts and I’m reducing my
alcohol intake and trying to lower
my stress levels.”
She jokes, “having said that,
I removed myself from RHOC
which should have 100% lowered
my stress and look at me!
Seriously though, I’m just trying
to be happy and appreciate
everything that’s good in my life.”

t won’t be long before we’re
hearing Iain Stirling’s witty
commentary on the Love
Island antics on a daily basis.
And from the sounds of it, the
changes to this year’s villa in
Majorca will see the Islanders
getting hot and bothered in more
ways than one – thanks to the
addition of new gym equipment!
At 34, the Scotsman is without
doubt one of the most successful
comedians of his generation and
has built up an almost cult status
doing the voice-over for ITV2’s
sizzling summer show.
But before the new series
kicks off next month, Iain
has been busy with other
commitments – not least his
biggest stand-up tour to date,
which ended in Dublin in April.
He’s also about to embark on
his sixth series hosting madcap
entertainment show CelebAbility.
And this week he releases his
first Amazon Original stand-up
special, called Failing Upwards.
Yet for all he has going on,
Iain is unflappably cool when
we catch up with him. And that,
in part, is to do with becoming
a dad to his gorgeous baby
daughter last year.
He and his Irish wife,
Love Island presenter Laura
Whitmore, 37, welcomed their
first child last March but are
careful not to share her
name or images of her face

appeared in the press. She then

Rebekah Vardy’s account.”
Rebekah denied the claim and
is suing Coleen for libel. The judge,
Mrs Justice Steyn, is considering
the evidence for verdict.
Lizzie questions whether
Rebekah now has any regrets
about taking the matter to court.
“I do wonder if she still thinks
it was the right thing to do. I hope
that she will reflect and ask if it
was worth it,” she says. “I think it
was so unnecessary. There was
a chance to stop this, and I think
she should have.
“I’m not sure what the driving
force behind her wanting to go
ahead with it was. Possibly
because she just wanted
to clear her name. I think
maybe there was some jealousy
there, too.
“These two girls are very
different people. They’re both in
the spotlight,” she adds. “Rebekah
has done great shows, such as
I’m A Celebrity… and Dancing On
Ice, and has enjoyed the showbiz
life. There’s nothing wrong with
that. But Coleen has been with
Wayne since she was 16, and
she’s had to learn to live with it.

Britain’s most tattooed woman Becky Holt, 34, and
tree surgeon Ben Mason, 23, from Poynton in
Cheshire, demonstrate that opposites do attract

but somehow our relationship just works.
When I met Ben in a pub at the start of
last year, I was content and confident about
my striking appearance – and he sensed that

Yet everything is so easy with Ben. Instead
of trying to change bad boys, which had been
my default behaviour, I realised I needed a
nice guy – a hard worker with family values.
He loves my tattoos and gives me big
hugs, saying how proud he is of me for
owning the attention I get.

My interest in body art
began at the age of 15 when I
walked into the local tattoo
shop with a specific request –
I wanted my first love’s name

and it felt empowering. I had turned my
former ‘tramp stamp’ into artwork.
I became obsessed with tattoo magazines.
The models looked so beautiful and powerful
– they were truly embracing themselves and
not conforming to the norm.
In my early twenties, I started getting new
tattoos every few months. I began with my
arm and then my shoulders and lower back.
I’d take modelling jobs to pay for them
or use birthday and Christmas money. I then
got my own tattoo shop, which was open
between 2014 and 2018, and during that
period I’d get a new tattoo every week. and I’m the face of the biggest tattoo

arguing. The return of
Love Island next month will have
us glued to all the latest fallouts
and bust-ups. After all, Faye and
Teddy’s fiery fight in the villa last
summer sparked a record 25,000
Ofcom complaints.
When it comes to our own
problems, some of us take the
royal family’s “stiff upper lip”
approach – if we ignore something
for long enough, perhaps it’ll
disappear. Just look at the
supposed ongoing feud between
Princes Harry and William.
Others, like the Kardashians,
seem to revel in confrontation.
Who can forget the infamous
“slapgate”, when Kim and
Kourtney’s bickering became
so heated it turned physical?
Arguments happen easily, but
when not dealt with properly, they
can lead to simmering tensions
and grudges that can last for a
long time. Relationship expert Neil
Wilkie, founder of online couples
therapy platform The Relationship
Paradigm, says that feuds,
whether between family, friends
or partners are often triggered
by a minor incident.

her split from Tyrone. But cracks
are starting to appear as the
name of Fiz’s murderous ex, John Stape,
has been mentioned. And it looks like life
is set to get even messier.
Here, Jennie McAlpine, who plays the
Coronation Street stalwart, tells us more…
Hi, Jennie. There’s drama ahead when
Fiz and her family find out that Phill’s
got secrets, too, and Hope decides
to teach him a lesson…
Yes! First of all, there is a giant digger, and
Phill’s car is involved. You don’t p**s my

So I think it would be lovely for her to have
a nice white wedding, and a happy ending.

nearly 18 years since she last wore Sam Ryan’s scrubs,
amanda Burton is returning to the mortuary as the forensic
crime drama airs its 25th series.
Emilia Fox, who joined the cast as Dr nikki alexander in 2004,
is delighted to be working alongside amanda in the six-part
anniversary outing.“it’s wonderful that we’re celebrating with
amanda,” says Emilia. “We wouldn’t be where we are today
without her. Sam is such a pioneering figure. Back then, female
leads were few and far between. it’s her legacy we live with.”
amanda’s return was suggested at the end of the previous
series, when Sam was seen asking nikki for help. now we’ll
discover more, as nikki and the team are drawn into a world of
intrigue and betrayal after the shooting of Sam’s partner, Jomo
(Hugh Quarshie), with whom she runs a medical business.
But with the show’s popularity still showing no sign
of slowing down, will we see the actresses on board if we

Phill reveals he’s planning to propose – but how
will Fiz react when he pops the question in front of
a disappointed Tyrone?
Abi gets two fake passports and plans to flee
to Costa Rica with Alfie. She begs Kev to keep her
plan secret after he learns what she’s up to.
Callum is furious that Ben has told Lewis about
the attacks. Ben drowns his sorrows at The Vic
and messages Lewis on a dating app. The pair
meet and head upstairs together. A text from
Callum changes Ben’s mind – but Lewis rapes
him. Later, a confused Ben can’t deny they had
sex – which Lewis claims Ben instigated. Could
this be the end for Ben and Callum?
Lola is upset when she discovers Isaac has
met someone else. She lashes out at Frankie,
thinking something is going on between her and
Summer fails to take her insulin on the day of
her exam. When she becomes ill, she realises that
she doesn’t have her diabetic kit with her and is
rushed to hospital.
Tim finally admits his impotence to Dr Gaddas,
who suggests adjusting his medication.
Sean flirts with a man in the Rovers. Jenny
encourages Sean to go after Frank when he
walks out.
And Faye researches alternative therapies to
HRT. Although Beth advises her to be careful, Faye
doesn’t want to listen. Will she end up going down
a dangerous route?
Jay. Later, though, she tries to make things up
with Frankie.
Jean will only allow Lily to care for her. Lily
stays off school to look after her gran, which
worries Kat.
Rainie is heartbroken when Stuart reveals
he has no feelings for Roland. Mitch sees that
Rainie is upset.
Also this week, Sam ropes in Ritchie and gets
her to threaten Denise. Will Ritchie get her hands
on the money Phil gave Denise?

Hi, Scott! What are your favourite
TV programmes?
I love Ozark. We’ve just watched the final
series, which was incredible – it keeps
you on the edge of your seat. We binged
Killing Eve, too.
What are your TV turn-offs?
Love Island. It’s not something that
I find interesting. I do like reality TV
– my first-ever experience of being on
TV in the UK was Big Brother. I was the
chicken vet on the first series [Scott was
called out to attend a sick chicken on the
show]. I love The Circle, but Love Island
is everything that you worry about for
your kids in one show!
And what about your TV guilty pleasure?
Selling Sunset. My wife [TV presenter Zö
Christien] is to blame. It’s got everything
– sunshine, great-looking people living a
fantastic lifestyle and amazing houses.
Who controls the remote in your house?
My wife – she always hogs it!

I binge like there’s
no tomorrow, it’s
terrible. We just

Sometimes I watch

Who is your favourite actor to watch?
I think Jodie Comer is just incredible.
She’s such a magnetic person and I love
to watch her. Jason Bateman is also
amazing, my wife absolutely loves him
too – he’s on her list!
Is there a particular show you’d love
to make a cameo in?
I’d love to do Strictly. I’ve always
thought I had the moves – but my kids
might say otherwise!
