Nursing at RMIT
Nursing at RMIT - Ranking
Entry to this program is competitive. Eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of
merit based on their academic achievement plus any adjustment factors.

You may be eligible to receive adjustment factors which include equity access schemes
and/or subject adjustments to a maximum of 28 aggregate adjustment points. For more
information about what adjustment factors RMIT considers visit Admission to RMIT.

We will consider your entire academic record to determine your eligibility for entry. The
highest level of education you have previously completed will usually determine how you are
ranked.

Note that due to the limited number of places available in the second year of this program,
entry for applicants with higher education study in a related field is restricted, and therefore
likely to be extremely competitive.

MAPPING COURSES ACTIVITY
MAPPING COURSES

We will be mapping courses in 3 different ways, for 3

courses in this session

● The 3 courses we are mapping are:

○ Bachelor of Science
○ Bachelor Pharmaceutical Sciences
○ (And VERY briefly on Biomedical Engineering)
Bachelor of Science
Major/Minors:
● Applied ● Earth science ● Genetics and ● Microbiology
● Ecology and
mathematics genomics ● Molecular
conservation biology
● Financial and ● Geographical biology
● Environmental
insurance science science ● Pharmacology
mathematics ● Astrophysics ● Human ● Physics
● Mathematical ● Biochemistry pathology ● Physiology
● Chemistry
statistics ● Immunology ● Plant sciences
● Computational
● Mathematics ● Psychology
science
● Pure ● Developmental ● Zoology

You can pick whichever you like (usually 2 majors + 2 minors)

each) each) each) each) each)
Single degree =
usually 2 minors (for
a 3 year course)
Explanation
SINGLE DEGREE SCIENCE:
- Made up of your choice of majors & minors, which are categories of science you want to study (e.g. developmental biology,
pure mathematics, etc.)
- Majors take 8 units
- First 2: ‘core units’ - common to a broad area in science (e.g. all maths majors have the same core units)
- Sometimes called ‘approved sequence’
- Next 6: choose 6 units from a pool of category-specific units (pure maths & ‘mathematics’ have different specific units)
- Each major has a ‘minor’ equivalent (same but with fewer units)
- Minors take 4 units each
- First 2: ‘core units’
- Next 2: choice of 2 units from the category-specific unit pool

- Single science degree = 3 years = 24 units

- Therefore, 2 majors & 2 minors is standard (or 1 major, 2 minors + electives, or 2 majors, 1 minor + electives… it’s up to you)
- You MUST pick at least 1 major

maximum 2 minors
Explanation
DOUBLE DEGREE SCIENCE:
- Still has majors and minors, sometimes you just have fewer science units to take
- For 5 year doubles (engineering + science, law + science), there’s space for 2 majors + 2 minors
- For 4 year doubles (biomed + science), there’s space for 1 major + 2 minors (or 2 majors)

BPS1011

● Unit Content
○ Topics include:
■ Cells, tissues, organs and
systems
■ Homeostasis
■ Macromolecules
■ Metabolism
■ DNA replication, gene
transcription and translation
■ The Nervous System
■ Endocrinology
First Year First Semester Example - BPS1021
BPS1021
● Unit Content
○ Topics include:
■ 1. Apply the key concepts in chemical
structure and bonding, including
functional groups, to rationalising the
shape, properties and reactions of
molecules;

■ 2. Determine the identity and molecular

structure of small molecules using
spectroscopic, chromatographic and
other experimental data.

■ 3. Safely and competently perform a

basic practical investigation using
standard laboratory techniques.
First Year First Semester Example - BPS1031
BPS1031

● Unit Content
○ This unit provides a basic understanding of physical chemistry and
together with Physical Chemistry II (BPS1032) provides the
conceptual and intellectual foundation for further studies in
pharmaceutical science units in 2nd and 3rd year.
○ Students will develop an:
○ (1) Understanding of the physicochemical principles that underpin
pharmaceutical chemistry, drug design and formulation design;
○ (2) Ability to undertake calculations concerning the
physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals and aspects of
pharmaceutical products;
○ (3) Ability to measure some fundamental properties of
pharmaceutical materials through laboratory exercises;
First Year First Semester Example - BPS1041
BPS1041
● Unit Content
○ Topics include:
■ 1. Explain the principles of
scientific inquiry
■ 2. Identify safe and ethical
practices in scientific research
■ 3. Develop a conceptual model
for scientific inquiry and evaluate
two real-world examples using
this model
■ 4. Plan and conduct a simple
scientific experiment using a
learner defined conceptual model
of hypothesis testing
■ 5. Identify and employ an
appropriate statistical test for the
empirically obtained data
■ 6. Re-evaluate a tested
hypothesis on the basis of the
research findings.
