Grasse, dating from the 17th
century, was restored by the
late antique dealer Maurizio
Epifani. ‘Old houses should
be left in their original state as far as pos-

heavy restructuring of the exterior, which
should remain integral to the surrounding
environment.’
The late Maurizio Epifani opened L’Oro

customers’ surprise at a shop filled with
fruit machines and 1950s robots next to
antique Chinese chairs and Provencal
armoires. The idea was, he says, to stock
the ‘improbable and the unlikely’, and its
success was both immediate and lasting.
So it is surprising that the house Maur-
izio bought in Provence, near Grasse, was
minimal in style, with a sense of space and
light that seemed a complete contrast to
his shop. Although this area has been well
populated since the 19th century, when
Grasse became the heart of the French
perfume industry, it was once as sparsely
inhabited as the rest of rural Provence.

Born in the UK, Sam spent the
first part of his childhood living on a boat
in Grenada, so sailing has always been at
the centre of his life. He first arrived in
France in 2011, and became a perma-

structured approach to sailing in France
than in the UK. Here, it isn’t necessary
to own your own boat because there is a
well-developed sponsorship model, and
the infrastructure is better.”
“In the UK it is still a bit of an amateur
sport. They excel in the Olympics, but
the French are very keen on adventures
and doing crazy things. There is just a
different image of sailing in France.”
He learned French during
