LIVING THINGS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

The things we see around us can be divided into two groups, living and non-
living
Living things
• Living things are things around us
which are able to eat, grow, move,
respire, breath and excrete.
• Anything that has life is called
living things
Non-living things
• A Non living thing is anything that
does not have life.
• They don’t have the characteristics
of living things.

Movement: Movement of an organism as a whole or part of its body from one place to
another. But plants have limited ability to move.
Respiration: We all living things/ organisms breathe and use oxygen to convert the food we
eat into energy.
The process of converting food to
energy using oxygen is called

Sensitivity: Ability to detect changes in the environment and respond to it. For example: we
feel the warmth, cold, etc
Grow: All living things grow and develop by
Increase in size and increase in the number of cells
Reproduction: All living things produce their off-springs ( young ones)

Excretion: Removal of water materials from our bodies.


For example: We breathe out carbon dioxide and nitrogen while plants release oxygen.
Nutrition: The act of taking in food to get energy to do various life functions

For example: We humans need food such as carbohydrates, vitamins, etc


Plants need carbondioxide, water, and sunlight to make their own food.
