Day 1: Golden Monkey trekking
and Gorilla Guardians Village
Have early morning breakfast and ready to be
picked by 05h00 from Kigali to transfer to Musanze
to arrive at 7h00 at the Volcanoes National Park
headquarters for briefing before you start your
guided walk at 08h00 in search of Golden Monkeys.
The tracking usually takes approximately 4 hours.
Once you come to the habituated families, you will
spend the allowed one hour with them as they go
about their daily life. Trekking to see the golden
Monkeys is an absolute highlight of Volcanoes
National Park.
The Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandt) is
a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes
Monkey, also known as the ‘Blue Monkey’ and is
endemic to the high altitude forests. The monkeys
are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time
leaping from bamboo branches of frolicking on the
forest floor. There are two habituated groups of
Golden monkey, one group comprises around 80 –
100 members. With its home at the foot of Mount
Sabyinyo. After the trek you be dropped at the hotel
for lunch and check in.
In the afternoon you will be taken to a trip to Gorilla
Guardians Village for experiencing Rwandan dance.
Gorilla Guardians (formerly Iby’iwacu Cultural
Village) is a Non-Profit umbrella organization that
aims at improving the lives of reformed poachers
and communities around Rwanda’s Volcanoes
National Park through provision of conservation
incentives, supporting community enterprise
development and livelihood based projects. They
offer an adventurous stay in a traditional rural,
Rwandan village that has existed for centuries living
with and next to mountain gorillas in Volcanoes
National Park. Gorilla Guardians gives you a rare
chance to meet local people, in their environment,
with a taste of their culture and traditions. The
community you visit will genuinely welcome you as
a special guest while they proudly present to you
aspects of their traditions and beliefs. This will truly
be an experience of a lifetime as you home stay
with the community and become part of their family.
You will have an opportunity to experience the
following:
i. A community walk, guided by a community
member, to visit different sites within the
community. This tour offers an unusual and
unforgettable insight into the everyday lives of the
village communities.

ii. Visiting the king’s house replica and listening to
all the Kings stories, the meanings of different
symbols within the palace guided by a local guide.
In this place you can be a king for minutes, hours
and days. You will be enthroned and can exercise
kings powers as bestowed to you by a village elder
through a village ceremony.
iii. Eight different types of traditional dances by all
community categories; men, women, youths and
the children, and other local and traditional musical
instruments (i.e. Intore dances, drumming, Ibyivugo,
Umuduri, Ikembe, Iningiri, Inanga, Ingoma,
Amakondera, Agakenke, etc)
iv. Ex-poachers ways of hunting /techniques,
methods and stories from ex-poachers in particular
Batwa (pygmies).
v. Batwa pottery making experience, lessons and
engagement
vi. Artisans and craft making by women, men and
children, etc.
The village is fascinating with a variety of cultural
experiences it can offer, and probably the best way
to get to know the local people, their culture, and
their ‘ways of living” is to take part in daily life
activities. The experience can last about 4 hours.
Drive back to the hotel for dinner and overnight
stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and
drive back to Kigali
Have early morning breakfast and ready to be
picked by 07h00 to transfer at the park
headquarters, arrive in time for briefing before your
start your guided walk at 08h00 in search of the
gorillas.
This is Rwanda’s premier tourist attraction, with the
mist-covered volcanoes of the Virunga being one of
only two locations in the world where you can track
a habituated family group of mountain gorillas. The
high point will be spending an hour with the
remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and
appearance as they go about their daily life,
feeding, playing, resting and raising their young.
The entire trip ends approximately around 1pm or
even early in case you were blessed to find the
gorillas near the park entrances.
After, the gorilla trek, head back to the hotel for
refreshing, lunch and check out. Then transfer to
Kigali for an overnight stay in Kigali Marriot
Hotel/Kigali Serena Hotel/Radisson Blu Hotel
(Luxury facility) or one of the best Four star hotels
(Mid-range facilities). Dinner will be organized in
one of the finest standalone restaurants in Kigali.
