AD After Aurangzeb's death in 1707, the Mughal Empire gradually declined. Mughal state

subedars (governors) declared independence. Mir Khamruddin Khan, who had rendered

distinguished service at the court of the Mughal emperors, was appointed Munsaburdar of
an army of 7000 men by Emperor Farooq Siyar. He appointed him as Subedar of Khandesh,

Birar, Telangana, Daulatabad, Ahmednagar and Arcot regions of Deccan. He was given the

titles of 'Fatejung' and 'Nizam-ul-Mulk'.

As Subedar of Deccan, Mir Khamruddin established peace in the region within two years. In
1720 Nizam-ul-Mulk was appointed Subedar of Malwa. Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah
appointed 'Nizam-ul-Mulk' as Wazir (Prime Minister) as Rangila. He introduced many
reforms in three years. Nizam-ul-Mulk abolished the Ijara system in the Mughal Empire and
increased the country's revenue. On 11 October 1724, he killed Mubariz Khan, the Subedar
of the Deccan, in the Battle of Shakkarkhed and occupied the Deccan. Recognizing Nizam
ul Mulk's greatness, the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah appointed him as the
permanent subedar of the Deccan region. He was given the title 'Asaf Ja'. Nizam-ul-Mulk
ruled with the title of 'Asaf Jah' hence the name 'Asaf Jahi' dynasty. From 1724 Nizam-ul-
Mulk ruled the Deccan region independently.

wars against the Maharashtrians, 'Chaut' agreed to pay tribute. He suppressed the
 
rebellions in the Deccan and brought Sarkaru, Kurnool and Arkatu Subas under control.

Muhammad BIT BANK SYLLABU came to
Nizam-ul-Mulk
Delhi from the Deccan and made peace with Muhammad Shah by giving Nadir Shah the
peacock throne and the Kohinoor diamond. Nizam-ul-Mulk died in 1748.
Succession Issue: After the Nizam's death, a succession struggle started between his son
Nasirjung and his grandson Muzaffar Jung (son of Bairunnisa). Muzaffar hoped to become
the Subedar of the Deccan with the help of the French. But Nasirjung defeated him with the
help of English. As a result of a conspiracy by the French, Nasarjung was killed by Himmat
Khan. Muzaffarjung then ascended the throne. He gave the southern region of Krishna River
to the French. Finally, Muzaffar Jung was killed at Lakkireddypalli due to Himmat Khan's

conspiracy. The French military leader Bussi made Nasirjung's brother Salabat Jung the
king.



Salabat Jung gave Kondaveedu, Nizampatnam and Narasapuram mandals to the French.

Between 1751-58, Bussi moved to Hyderabad and helped Salabat Jung to consolidate his
post.
 In order to protect them from the attacks of the Maharashtrians, Salabat captured
Northern Sarkar from the French and Guntur from Bussi. After the British defeated the
French in the Third Carnatic War, Salabat made a truce with the British and gave them the
northern provinces.

Nizam Ali Khan (1761-1803)

Nizam Ali Khan was the fourth son of Nizam ul Mulk. He captured his brother Salabat Jung
and became the king of the Deccan with the title of Asaf Jah II. Nizam Ali moved the capital
from Aurangabad to Hyderabad. In 1765, Robert Clive obtained a decree from Mughal
Emperor Shah Alam ceding the northern kingdoms to the British. But Nizam Ali Khan did
not accept this decree. With the help of Kandregu Jogi Pantu, a dubasi, the British forced
the northern governments to pay Rs. 15 lakhs was acquired. Finally, in 1766, according to
the agreement, Nizam Ali Khan gave all the government districts except Guntur to East
India.
Nizam Ali built a gun factory with the help of French soldier Raymond. In 1790 the Third
Mysore War began. The East India Company made an agreement with Nizam Ali and the ^
Marathas against Tipu Sultan. This alliance defeated Tipu Sultan and received the kingdom
 
and three crores of rupees as compensation.

Rs. 2 crore as damages. Shortly after the Marathas defeated Nizam Ali, his son 'Aliza'
rebelled. This revolt was supported by Sadashiva Reddy, the zamindar of Metuku (Medak).
Nizam's army with the help of French soldier Raymond suppressed this rebellion. Aliza was
arrested. After that he committed suicide.
In 1799, Governor General Wellesley introduced the method of military cooperation in India.
The first Indian king to agree and sign it was Nizam Ali Khan (1798). British troops came to
the aid of Nizam Ali Khan under the Treaty of Military Cooperation. They established a base
in Hyderabad. For the maintenance of this army, Nizam Ali Khan gave the Datta Mandals

acquired as a result of the Third Mysore War to the British.

Sikander Jah (1803-1829)

After the death of Nizam Ali Khan (1803), Sikander Jah became the third Asaf Jah of the

Kingdom of Hyderabad. During his time, Mir Alam was appointed as Diwan and Raja
Chandulal
 as Peshkar. Mir Alam repaired Hyderabad - Madras and Bombay roads. In 1808,
Mir Alam built a pond in his name. In 1814, William Palmer started the Palmer and Co bank
in Hyderabad.
In 1811, Henry Russell was appointed as the British representative in Hyderabad. In 1816,
Henry Russell formed a special army to settle the turbulent situation in the Hyderabad
kingdom. With the help of this army, Pindaris, Bhils and local zamindars revolts were
suppressed and peace was established in Hyderabad kingdom. In the later period, the
management of the army became a burden for Russell. He took a loan from the Palmer
Company as he was unable to pay his salaries due to financial crisis.
In 1820, Metcalf arrived as the British representative in Hyderabad. He introduced financial
reforms and tried to make the Nizam pay off the debt owed to the Palmer Company. It was
during Charles Metcalf's time that the Resident's (now Women's College) building in Kothi
was constructed.

Nasiruddin Daulah (1829-57)

Nasiruddaula came to power with the title of fourth Asaf Jah. During his period, the ^
economic condition of Hyderabad kingdom deteriorated. Lord Dalhousie, who came as
 
Governor General in 1848, occupied the native colonies of the country. By 1850, the

Two important events took place in the country during Nasir-ud-daula's time.

The first was the Wahhabi movement: aimed at expelling the Sikhs from Punjab and the
British from the country. Mubariz Uddaula, brother of Nasiruddaula, led the Wahhabi
movement in Hyderabad. Nawab Gulan Khan of Kurnool was actively involved in the
Wahhabi movement. In 1838, Mubariz was arrested and put in Golconda Jail. He died in jail
on 25 June 1854.


The
 second factor was the Treaty of Birar: the Nizam was unable to settle the debt owed to
the British even by 1853. Due to Dalhousie's pressure, along with Biraru, Osmanabad and

Raichur districts were given to the East India Company. Diwan Siraj-ul-Mulk, who signed the

Treaty of Biraru on 21 May 1853, died in disgrace. His son-in-law Mir Turab Ali Khan held the
post
 of Diwan with the title of Salarjung. Chadarghat Bridge was built during Nasiruddin
Daulah's reign. King Edward Memorial Hospital (Gandhi Hospital) was built in 1854.

Afzaluddaulah (1857-1869)
After the death of Nasiruddaulah, his eldest son Afzal-ud-Daulah (Afzaluddaulah) ascended
the throne with the title of Asaf Ja. The rebellion of 1857 also affected Hyderabad. On 17
July 1857 Turrebaz Khan, a Jamedar in the army, gathered 5000 men and attacked the
office of the British Resident at Hyderabad. Colonel Davidson, the British representative,
with the help of Salarjung, suppressed the rebellion. Turrebaz Khan was shot dead and his
body was hanged in Sultan Bazar. Maulvi Allauddin who helped Turrebaz Khan was arrested
and sent to Andaman Jail.
Kaulasa Jagirdar Raja Dipsingh gathered some Jagirdars, Deshmukhs, Patels and Patwaris
and started an anti-British rebellion by making Kaulasa fort a guerilla training centre. With
this, the king abolished the Jagirdar of Kaulasa and sentenced him to three years
imprisonment. By 1859 the rebellion was completely quelled when Kaulasa Patwari Ranga
^
Rao was sent to the Andamans. Afzaluddaula was awarded the title of 'Star of India' for his
support to the British during the 1857 rebellion.

his representative. Salarjung brought reforms during the time of Mahbub Ali Khan. On
February 5, 1884, as Mahbub Ali Khan became a major, British Governor General Lord
Rippon himself came and handed over power. During his period, Urdu was made the royal
language in place of Persian.
