3rd November, 2011

We have had a busy week with Craft and Livestock Day and all students have been involved in some way. Thank you to the parents who were able to assist with organisation, judging or supporting the students during the day. As usual, the standard of entries for craft day and the animals has been of a very high standard. Awards were presented at prizegiving which was held this afternoon and results will be included in the next newsletter.

Congratulations to Jacob Li Calsi & Jessica Alsemgeest who have both recently applied for and received an MIS Honours Award. Jacob & Jessicas success was recognised during school assembly today and their families were invited to attend. Part of the requirements to achieve Honours at MIS is to receive two Excellences and one Merit from points gained from Academics, Sports, Culture and Civics. Students must also show commitment, a positive attitude, responsibility and reliability to be eligible. Jacob has become an Honours Student by gaining an Excellence in Academics, Civics and Culture. Jessica has become an Honours Student by gaining an Excellence in Academics and Culture and a Merit in Civics. As with all students who manage to achieve this award, Jacob & Jessicas success has been the result of actively making the most of the extension and enrichment programmes our school offers. These achievements are not only a credit to Jacob & Jessica but an outstanding example of school-wide attitude, character and effort that we value in all MIS students. MIS Hockey Team Win Championship Final

This year we had a very enthusiastic group of 17 students that made up the Morrinsville Intermediate Hockey Team. We were entered in the Waikato B Grade competition. The team gelled well and went from strength to strength throughout the season winning most of their games. With these successes behind them, they ended up playing off in the finals against Southwell which would be a strong opponent. The MIS team played exceptionally well to take out the B Grade championshipwinning 5-0. A big congratulations to all the team; what a great team effort! They have all made me so proud. A special thank you to all the parents and supporters, we couldn't have done it without you. I hope everyone now has a chance to rest before looking forward to the next season. Morrinsville Group Day

Good luck to all students who will be attending Morrinsville Livestock Group Day tomorrow. All students involved will need to be at the Recreation Grounds ready for a 9.30am start.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL NOTICES

There will be two important notices coming home in the next day or two. One is for Year 8 students who have enrolled to attend Morrinsville College next year and gives details on when their college testing will take place. The second notice will come home to all students and outlines a health unit that all classes will be starting next week. This is a Drug & Alcohol unit which aims to inform and help young people make responsible choices regarding drugs and alcohol including peer pressure.

Year 8 Japan Exchange Trip

On Monday 19th September Charlotte Richardson, Kelera Fisher, Paris Lowe and Mrs Marshall began their journey to Makuhari, Japan at 2.30am. After a 12 hour flight we arrived at Makuhari Junior High School tired but excited to meet our host families. Our host families were amazing; they were kind, generous and we learnt so much about the Japanese culture. Some of the main differences were catching lots of trains, waking up early to get going to school as it was not a 10 minute walk down the road, going to school on a Saturday and how dedicated they are to their studies. We visited many of the tourist attractions around Tokyo with the highlights being Disneyland, Disney Sea, the Tokyo Tower, Akihabara (a technology city), Lalaport which is gigantic shopping centre 10 times bigger than Chartwell (which we got lost in!), the Japanese Gardens and experiencing tea ceremonies when we had an interesting looking and tasting green tea! We all had an amazing two weeks in Japan and wish to return some day as we made new friends which we will keep for many years to come. For any Year 7 students who are interested in experiencing a trip of a lifetime, start saving nowwe all totally recommend it. Report by Paris Lowe.
