This is what we have come up with so far since day 1. This will be
updated as we go along until we finished all of Chapter 1. Then on, you
will be grouped to propose your own research study.

Day 2
Selects Relevant Literature
Overarching Questions

1. What does ”relevant literature” even mean?

2. How do you select relevant literature?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Relevant Literature

• Relevant literature refers to academic writings or

published materials that are pertinent, fitting, or
appropriate to a particular subject or topic.
• It is often used in the context of academia, research, and
scholarship, where it is essential to find reliable and
authoritative sources to support an argument, theory, or
hypothesis.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Where to Find Them?

• Relevant literature can be found in academic journals,

books, and online sources such as databases, digital
archives, and institutional repositories. The specific
sources will depend on the topic and field of research you
are interested in.
• A good place to start would be to consult with a librarian or
search using keywords related to your topic on online
catalogs and databases like JSTOR, Google Scholar, or
PubMed. Additionally, you may want to consult with
academic societies, associations, or organizations to find
relevant literature or conference proceedings.

Consideration When Selecting Relevant Literature

When selecting relevant literature for research or study, there are several key considerations to keep in mind:
• Relevance to Research Question/Topic: Ensure that the literature directly addresses your research question
or topic of interest. Look for materials that provide insights, theories, or data relevant to your study.
• Publication Source and Credibility: Consider the credibility of the publication source. Peer-reviewed journals,
academic books, and reputable conferences are often reliable. Check the author's credentials and affiliations as
well. (research manuscripts in the Research Center)
• Publication Date: Take note of the publication date to ensure the information is current. In rapidly evolving
fields, recent publications may be more relevant, while in established fields, older seminal works might still hold
significance. (within the last 5 years)
• Scope and Depth: Evaluate the depth and scope of the literature. Some sources may provide a broad
overview, while others may delve deeply into specific aspects. A combination of both can provide a well-rounded
understanding.
• Methodology and Research Design: Assess the methodology and research design employed in the literature.
This is crucial for understanding the validity and reliability of the findings. Consider whether the methods used
align with your research approach.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Consideration When Selecting Relevant Literature

When selecting relevant literature for research or study, there are several key considerations to keep in mind:
• Theoretical Framework: Check if the literature aligns with your theoretical framework. Understanding the
theoretical underpinnings of the work can help you determine its relevance to your research. Citations and
• References: Examine the citations and references within the literature. This can lead you to additional relevant
sources and indicate the depth of the author's research.
• Diversity of Sources: Aim for a diverse range of sources. Including perspectives from different authors,
disciplines, and cultural backgrounds can enrich your understanding and provide a more comprehensive view of
the topic.
• Consistency and Agreement: Look for consistency and agreement among different sources. If multiple
reputable works support a certain idea or theory, it may carry more weight in your research.
• Accessibility: Ensure that the selected literature is accessible. Consider factors such as availability in your
institution's library, online access, or the ability to obtain the material through interlibrary loans.
