concentration , Memory skills and Ability to think.

 To expose individuals to the values implicit within human rights, respect


and peace at all levels of society to enable individuals and societies to
live in peace and harmony.

individuals to develop to their fullest potential, affectively as well as
physically.
PERFORMANCE OF UNESCO

 Performance of UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and


Cultural Organization) is very much evident from its name.
 It helps to maintain peace and security in the world by promoting
collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and
communication for justice and for the human rights without discrimination
of race, sex, language or religion in agreement with the Charter of the
United Nations.
Role of UNESCO in Education

 Due to its close links with education ministries and other partners in 193
countries, UNESCO supports countries to develop and expand educational
activities
 It advises policy-makers on how to make education policies, curriculum and
provide training to the teachers.
 Major progress has been made towards increasing access to education at all
levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools particularly for women and
girls yet bolder efforts are needed to achieve universal education goals.
 It is the only UN agency with a command to cover all aspects of education. It
has been entrusted to lead the Global Education 2030 Agenda
through Sustainable Development Goal 4.
Role of UNESCO in Education
Role of UNESCO in Science

 It assists the flow of scientific and technical information across national


boundaries.
 It facilitates access to published information and data.
 It supports the application of new technologies and the creation of data
bases.
 Pursuing scientific cooperation such as early warning systems for tsunamis
to strengthen ties between nations and societies.
 UNESCO Science Sector is working closely with Government of Pakistan to
implement different initiatives including strategic Strengthening of Flood
Warning and management techniques in the arid areas etc.

Role of UNESCO in Cultural
Organization

 UNESCO’s work for culture is extremely important to the promotion and protection of our
cultural heritage.
 It aims to preserve and raise respect for cultural identities and diversity.
 Almost two thousand projects were launched worldwide for Cultural Development e.g.
projects on the "Maya World" ,"Slave Route" ,"Iron Road" and "The Silk Road”.
 UNESCO was entrusted with the task of preservation of the world heritage i.e. works of art
and monuments of historic interest.
 UNESCO explains that natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis can threaten
World Heritage sites so that they can be protected by international treaties
Successes of UNESCO

The biggest successes of UNESCO are maintain peace, ending Famine,


Minimizing bomb attacks and Protecting the Galapagos Islands.

Peace: Due to conflict resolution and peacekeeping initiatives, the


number of people dying in conflicts has declined since 1945.

Ending famine: Large parts of the world’s population suffer from poverty
and hunger, and thousands die of malnourishment every year. But the
numbers have fallen due to Food Program and emergency aid
management.

Failures of UNESCO

 Genocide in Rwanda and Srebrenica:The UNESCO had an


“Assistance Mission” for Rwanda, which failed to stop the majority Hutus
from killing almost a million members of the Tutsi minority.
 The massacre of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men at the hands of
Serb forces in Srebrenica was another UN failure.

 Rape and child sex abuse in the Congo: UN peacekeepers


were accused of paying for sex or raping women and young girls they
were supposed to be protecting in the Democratic Republic of Congo

 Spreading cholera in Haiti: Genome testing showed that the


world’s worst recent outbreak of cholera, which swept through Haiti after
the 2010 earthquake, was likely started by a Nepali UN peacekeeping
force who carried the disease. More 700,000 were infected and 8,000
died.

 Iraq oil for food program: This UN program enabled Iraq to gain
relief from international sanctions by selling oil through the UN, which
would supervise the delivery of food and medicine with the resulting cash.
However, the money ended up in private hands and became the worst
financial scandal in UN history.
