Course Introduction
This course introduces about numerical technique of finite element methods (FEM) to undergraduate students. It
will describe the fundamental techniques of FEM using Direct Stiffness Method (DSM) which is for structural
problems. Then afterwards it will also explain mathematical modelling and its application by using commercial
software for heat transfer and fluid flow problems (tentative). It will also discuss different numerical
methods/laws which are used on the back end of FEM. Students will be expected to analyze, judge, design and
solve everyday engineering problems coming in the domain areas of the course.

Course Contents
Matrix theory, Direct Stiffness method, Energy method, Development of truss and beam elements, Plane stress
and strain elements, Isoparametric formulation, Application of FEM in major streams of mechanical engineering
with the aid of examples. Errors during FEM, Use of computational commercial codes (Matlab, ANSYS) to
apply on different case studies.
