One of the factors in global warming is carbon monoxide. The more carbon monoxide in the atmosphere,
the less the atmosphere is able to clean itself. The result is a warming of the atmosphere, the so-called global
warming, and possibly ozone damage.
Earlier, it was found that carbon monoxide was concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, and could be attributed
to deforestation. Huge areas of forest and grasslands in South America and Africa have been burned, putting
carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Recently, however, the Southern Hemisphere has been found to be clean,
while the Northern Hemisphere is more polluted than expected.
The latest research was done during the northern winter. The high levels in the Northern Hemisphere could be
because of this. In winter carbon monoxide is destroyed more slowly. There are also more fires burned in winter,
and possibly industrial processes work harder. It could also reflect the ever-increasing number of cars on the roads.
Optimists hope that the reason why the North has overtaken the South as the major area of carbon monoxide is that
at last the burning has stopped, or at least slowed down.

Due to natural disasters or man-made damages during the war, a great number of historical sites and artifacts
have been damaged. It is difficult to repair these sites, as it may take a lot of time, cost, and there is a lack of the
information on how the original work actually looked. Rebuilding cultural heritage sites and artifacts is similar to
solving a big jigsaw puzzle without knowing what it should look like - everything starts from the beginning and
guesses.
One project has been run by a group of scientists to help with the time-consuming restoration of the heritage
sites. The technologies in the project are robotics, 3-D scanning, modern machines and artificial intelligence.
These artifact pieces are scanned by high-tech computers to predict their original architecture. Throughout the
process, the computer system is guided by humans to ensure that the pieces are accurately rebuilt. The computer
software collects all pieces and connects them together to draw a picture of what the original heritage site looked
like.
The second component brings robots into the workplace. The robot should be able to scan those pieces of a
heritage site on its own, and connects them together as a complete one. The robot looks like an average person to
save a large amount of time and human resources when gathering the information about the heritage sites.

If you want to go to a university, you usually apply during your last year at school, when you are 17-18. You
can apply to study at any university in Britain and most people choose a university that is not in their own town.
So, university students usually live away from home. Students get a grant from the government to study. At the
beginning of your last year at school, you receive an application form. On this form you choose up to five
universities that you would like to go to. The form is sent to those universities with information from your school
about you and your academic record. If the universities are interested in your application, they will ask you to
attend an interviewIf they are still interested after the interview, they will offer you a place.
Any offer, however, is only conditional at this stageApplications and interviews take place several months
before students do their A-level examinations. These are the exams that you do at the end of your time at school.
So, when a university makes an offer, it will tell you the minimum grades that you will have to get when you do
your A-level exams. If you don't obtain those grades, then, you will not be able to get the place. It will be offered to
someone else, and you must apply again to another university. You don't have to accept your place immediately.
Some students don't want to go straight from school to university. So, after they have taken their A-level, they take
a year out to work or travel.

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training
programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience.
Programmes usually last between two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as practical
elements. You will spend one or two days a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will
acquire the theoretical knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent at
a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for example by learning to operate
machinery. You will get to know what your company does, learn how it operates and find out if you can see
yourself working there after completing your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the time you have
completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also have hands-
on experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognised training programmes in Germany, so chances
are good that one of them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which one that might be by visiting
one of the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organised in many German cities at different times in the
year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training programme are very
good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around two thirds
of all students leaving school go on to start a vocational training programme.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
If you want to go to a university, you usually apply during your last year at school, when you are 17-18.
You can apply to study at any university in Britain and most people choose a university that is not in their own
town. So, university students usually live away from home. Students get a grant from the government to study. At
the beginning of your last year at school, you receive an application form. On this form you choose up to five
universities that you would like to go to. The form is sent to those universities with information from your school
about you and your academic record. If the universities are interested in your application, they will ask you to
attend an interview. If they are still interested after the interview, they will offer you a place.
Any offer, however, is only conditional at this stage. Applications and interviews take place several months
before students do their A-level examinations. These are the exams that you do at the end of your time at school.
So, when a university makes an offer, it will tell you the minimum grades that you will have to get when you do
your A-level exams. If you don’t obtain those grades, then, you will not be able to get the place. It will be offered
to someone else, and you must apply again to another university. You don’t have to accept your place immediately.
Some students don’t want to go straight from school to university. So, after they have taken their A-level, they take
a year out to work or travel.

Distant education is a rapidly developing approach to instructions throughout the business. The approach
has been widely used by business, industrial, and medical organizations. For many years, doctors, veterinarians,

videotapes, videodiscs, computer-based instructions, and interactive video courses can be sent to individual
students. In addition, radio, broadcast television, telelectures, and teleconferences are utilized for “live” distant
