 Introduction

The Canada Green Building Council

(CaGBC) was created in 2003 to further the expansion
of green building in Canada. Canada had participated
in the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)
through British Columbia's membership in the
USGBC's Cascadia Chapter.
The CaGBC was founded by Kevin Hydes of
Integral Group, Joe Van Belleghem, Jon Hobbs,
formerly of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada
and Peter Busby of Perkins+Will Canada. It is a
member of the World Green Building Council.
The CaGBC's mission is to lead and accelerate
the transformation to high-performing, healthy green
buildings, homes and communities throughout Canada.

The CaGBC promotes its Zero Carbon

Building Standard, and through GBCI Canada,
promotes the LEED rating system, Investor Confidence
Project and Investor Ready Energy Efficiency
certification, TRUE zero waste certification, SITES,
and the WELL Building Standard.
What is green building ?

* Green buildings are…

- Building or homes that are more energy efficient,
produce less waste and are healthier to be inside.

* Green buildings don’t literally mean….

- Building that produce zero –emissions or totally
green or totally environment friendly

* Green building certification systems…

- Certification systems by different organization or
institution that setup standards to quantify how ‘green’ a
building is
- Diffferent standards worlds wide, but similar in
concept
 Why Green Building ?

• Transforming Canada’s buildings for good

Green buildings are a proven choice for a

better, more prosperous and resilient future. They reduce
energy and water use, cut waste, and are more affordable
to operate. By building green, we can create good jobs and
encourage climate-friendly innovations. Today, advances
in green building can reduce carbon emissions and
eliminate environmental impacts, making communities
more resilient and helping Canada meet its climate targets.

 What are the aims of Green building?

• Reduce energy and water use

• Healthy environmental quality

• Smart material selection

• Reduce Building effects on its site

LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) Canada
The Canadian version of LEED is very similar to the
USGBC NC version. It contains the following categories:

• Sustainable sites (SS)

• Water efficiency (WE)
• Energy and atmosphere (EA)
• Materials & resources (MR)
• Indoor environmental quality (EQ)
• Innovation in design (ID)
• Regional priorities (RP)

What’s a zero carbon building?

A zero-carbon building is highly energy-efficient
and minimizes GHG emissions from building materials and
operations. Until all emissions can be eliminated, high-
quality carbon offsets can be used as a counterbalance.
Green Building Certifications /
Rating Systems
Canadian green builders have a few options to
choose from when selecting a green building certification or
rating system.
Following is a complete list of the different green
building certification / rating systems operating in Canada

 BOMA BEST : BOMA (Building Owners and

Managers Association) BEST (Building Environmental
Standards) assesses environmental performance and
management over the following ten areas: energy, water,
air, comfort, health and wellness, custodial, purchasing,
waste, site and stakeholder engagement.

 BREEAM : BREEAM is a widely recognized

environmental assessment method and rating system for
buildings. This international system measures
performance against established benchmarks over a
number of categories, such as energy, water, health and
well-being, pollution, transport, materials, waste, land
use, innovation and management processes.

 Built Green : Built Green Canada is a national

certification program focused on residential
building. Built Green accounts for: energy and envelope,
materials and methods, indoor air quality, ventilation,
waste management, water conservation, and building
practices.
 EnerGuide : This straightforward 0 to 100 rating system,
backed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), measures
a home’s energy performance only.

 Green Key Eco-Rating Program : A program

specifically for hotels and other lodging facilities, the
Green Key Eco-Rating Program is recognized by the
Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

 LEED : LEED adopts a holistic approach to

sustainability, accounting for the following eight
categories: location and transportation, sustainable sites,
water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and
resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation, and
regional priority. Ratings of certified, silver, gold or
platinum are awarded according to a comprehensive 110-
point rating system.

 Zero Carbon Building Standard : This Canada Green

Building Council Standard evaluates new and existing
buildings by carbon emissions.

 Passive Solar Index : Buildings that achieve energy

consumption levels of less than 50 kWh per square meter
(whether the building is new or existing) receive
recognition. That number represents a 50% reduction in
energy use compared to the national building code.
 Green Building Materials used in
Construction
Following is the list of Green building materials used in
construction :

 Earthen Materials :
- Earthen materials like adobe, cob, and rammed
earth are being used for construction purposes since yore.
- For good strength and durability- chopped straw,
grass and other fibrous materials etc. are added to earth.

 Wood :
- Wood is one of the most famous building
materials used around the world.

 Bamboo :
- Bamboo is one of the most used multipurpose and
durable materials used in construction.
- They can be used to construct frames or supports,
walls, floors etc.

 Earth Bags :
-These types of structures can be seen in military
bases, near banks of water resources etc.

 Natural Fiber :
- Natural fibers like cotton, wool can also be used
as insulation materials.
 Steel :
- Steel roof panels and shingles are highly durable
and they can be recycled again and again. So, these are the
best choices for green roofing materials.

 Composites :
- They are light in weight, inexpensive and
provide good insulation for the structure and save energy.

 Non- VOC paints :

- Non-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
paint or green paint is recommended over VOC containing
paints.

 Stone :
- Stone is a naturally occurring and a long-lasting
building material. Some Stone structures built hundreds of
years ago are still in existence without much abrasion.
- Stones are good against weathering hence they
can be used to construct exterior walls, steps, exterior
flooring etc.

 Slate/ Stone Roofing :

- Slate is naturally formed rock which is used to
make tiles.
- Slate tiles have high durability and they are used
as roofing materials.
 Project

Co-operators New Headquarters

Guelph, Ontario

Rating System/Standard Building Type

Zero Carbon Building Office

The new Co-operators headquarters building

located at 101 Cooper Drive, Guelph, aims to redefine
sustainability and efficiency for the Canadian insurance
co-operative. The three-storey building has a total gross
floor area of 21,081 m2 and is comprised of several types
of space, including offices, meeting rooms, a café sitting
area, commercial kitchen, building services and a data
centre. To support Co-operators employees, the new
building will also feature a light-filled reception and
atrium space, a fitness facility, outdoor walking trail and
sport court, and a wide variety of flexible spaces designed
to support connection and collaboration. It was important
to the Co-operators that their new headquarters
demonstrate their commitment to sustainability . As a
result, they pursued certification under CAGBC’s Zero
Carbon Building — Design standard. Complementing
their ZCB — Design certification, the project is also
targeting LEED Gold and WELL Platinum certifications
to ensure a holistic approach to sustainability.
Green building benefits
• Human health
Green buildings offer occupants better air quality
with lower concentrations of CO2. Since studies show
people spend 90% of their time indoors, air quality is
critical to better health. People living and working in
green buildings actually experience fewer sick days
and lower asthma rates.

• Environmental
Green buildings use less water, energy, and
natural resources. Zero-carbon buildings reduce
harmful emissions by avoiding embodied carbon from
materials and building processes and operational
carbon emitted by running the building’s mechanical
systems.

• Economic
Green buildings make good business sense.
While they may cost slightly more to construct, they
are more efficient to operate, which saves money in the
long-term.

• Social
Green buildings can play a role in shaping
more equitable communities. Everyone benefits when
community members have access to healthy, affordable
housing or when communities are climate-resilient and
can withstand extreme weather events.
 Need of green building
• We spent 90% of our time indoors which implies we
need to have better air quality, lighting and eco
friendly neighbourhood.
• Buildings account for a large amount of land use,
energy and water consumption, and atmosphere
alteration. Considering the statistics, reducing the
amount of natural resources buildings consume and
the amount of pollution given off is seen as crucial for
future sustainability, according to EPA.
• The offshoot of the price of conventional sources of
energy implies that future buildings should self suffice
their requirements of energy from non
conventional(green) sources.

 Advantages of Green Building

Following are the benefits of Green Building:

• Reduction of natural resource consumption

• Reduction of operating costs
• Health, comfort and safety for all residents
• Energy optimization and reduction of energy
consumption
• Increased productivity of the occupants
• Better indoor air quality (IAQ has a tremendous
impact on human health)
