    Child abuse is associated with increased recruitment of perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), according to a study of postmortem human brain samples. The study found more Wisteria floribunda lectin-positive PNNs in the lower layers of the vmPFC in individuals with a history of child abuse compared to controls, with no change in parvalbumin-positive neurons. The majority of PNNs were located around inhibitory neurons, and RNA sequencing data suggested oligodendrocyte progenitor cells highly express PNN components and are closer to parvalbumin neurons in individuals with a history of child abuse.
