Functional description
The Servo Gravity Feeder is constructed of a stainless steel frame, a stainless steel hopper unit and a
gate. Additionally, for ease of access, the unit is provided access plates.

The flow of material through the Servo Gravity Feeder is controlled by a gate (item [E] in the drawing
above) which opens and closes under the control of a servo motor with precision gearbox (item [A] in
the drawing above). The servo motor is bi-directional to enable the gate to be opened and closed as
required.

The material descends into the hopper of the Servo Gravity Feeder (item [C] in the drawing above) and
will remain there until the gate is opened. Under system control, the motor will cause the gate to open a
precisely calibrated amount such that material will flow through the unit in a precisely controlled manner.
The motor and precision gearbox can be accurately controlled such that very small increments of gate
opening can be set meaning that, for optimum flow, a wide setting can be used at the start of a feed
which the gate angle being reduced to a smaller angle of opening as a more accurate and/or slower flow
must be provided. Fast and fine flow can therefore be easily provided.

Supply hopper
The supply hopper must not be supported by the feeder device.

Additionally, in order to achieve the optimum performance and accuracy of the subsequent weighing
process, the supply hopper must have a minimum level of material stock of two to three weighings. A
level indicator controls the minimum stock, and as soon as this level falls below the minimum required
material stock the weighing process will stop.

Dimensions and product views

Equipment as supplied in a production line assembly will already have been assembled to customer
specifications which will ensure consistency along production lines.

Additionally, some parts – for example gear motors – can be mounted on either side of the equipment
and it is possible that diagrams and photographs may be represented by mirror images in some cases.
This does not affect the technical explanations or the operation of the equipment.

Adjustment/Calibration possibilities
Feeder throughput selection
General

The following instructions are provided as a general rule to help reduce “trial and error” issues
to a minimum. Once a satisfactory setting has been achieved for a particular material and
throughput it is recommended that the setting numbers be recorded so that the feeder can be
quickly set up when such material is handled again.

Fine feed rate

Tests have shown that for optimum accuracy the fine feed rate and duration should be:

Material Bulk Density Fine Feed Rate Fine Feed Duration

3
(kg/dm ) (kg/s) (s)

0.5 and over 1.5 1.5

Under 0.5 1.0 1.5

The gate settings shown in the above table are based on these values.

The fine feed period can be adjusted on the electronic control module.

Main feed rate

This is the nominal value which, with the fine feed rate stated above, will provide the required
User Manual – Servo Gravity Feeder GHS
weighings per minute.

By referring to the graph on the following page, it is possible to calculate the main feed rate
value (in kg/s) from the required number of weighings per minute. For example, using a value
of 20 x 25kg weighings per minute will equate to a main feed rate of 25kg/s.

Bearings and guides

Most of the bearings are lubricated for service life except for bearings with grease nipples which should
be greased monthly with a Li-saphonified bearing grease to remove impurities.

Guides are made of highly wear resistent dry running materials and do not require lubrication.

Technical data – motor drive and gear unit

Mounting position and drive lubricant

Unless a special arrangement has been made, SEW-EURODRIVE supplies the drives with a lubricant
fill adapted for the specific gear unit and mounting position. The mounting position (M1 - M6) will have
been specified with the order, and the lubricant fill must be adapted to the mounting position.

If the mounting is changed, the amount of oil must be adapted as required. Consequently, a mounting
position may only be changed after consultation with SEW-EURODRIVE, otherwise claims to warranty
no longer apply.

The following lubricant tables show the permitted standard lubricants for BS.F.. helical-bevel and PS.F..
planetary gear units from SEW-EURODRIVE. A lubricant change is not necessary for PS.C.. gear units.

Anti-friction bearing greases

The anti-friction bearings in gear units and motors are given a factory fill with the greases listed below.
SEW-EURODRIVE recommends regreasing anti-friction bearings with a grease fill at the same time as
changing the oil.

The following grease quantities are required:

- For fast-running bearings (gear unit input end)

Fill the cavities between the rolling elements one-third full with grease

- For slow-running bearings (gear unit input side)

Fill the cavities between the rolling elements two-thirds full with grease
