Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Scope

Background of the Study

Most flowering plants are able to grow faster in a short time with daily
watering and always exposed to sunlight they able to bloom immediately and
increase more. But some plant is slow that it takes them years or decades for
one flower plant to grow and bloom.
Vermicompost is a product of the earthworm digestion and aerobic
decomposition using the activities of micro- and microorganisms at a room
temperature. Vermicomposting, or worm composting, produces s rich organic soil
amendment containing a diversity of plant nutrients and beneficial
microorganisms. (Rick Carr, 2016)
The Snake plant that is known as Dracaena trifasciata, Dracaena means a
tropical palm like shrub or tree with ornamental foliage, popular as a greenhouse
or indoor plant and trifasciata means three-branded it, reference to
coloring/design of leaves. This plant usually called as mother-in-law because the
particular reason for it refers to the pointed tips of the leaves, which symbolizes
the sharp tongue of the mother-in-law.
The snake plant can have many benefits inside the house it absorbs a lot
of toxins inside the room then filter it, and produce a pure quality oxygen to
breath in small or medium-sized areas. Unlike other houseplants, the snake
continues to convert a lot of indoor air into usable oxygen at night, and it also
help reduce the impact of airborne allergens like dust and dander by releasing
oxygen and providing moisture to the air. It has also have a significant benefit
because of the reason that the poor indoor air quality has been linked to many
health conditions, such as asthma and allergies.
Vermicompost tea is an easy, effective organic way to feed your plants.
No matter which method you go with, your plant will be healthier for it as it

improves the physical structure of the soil and promote plant growth, contribute
to initiate roots formation and improved the soil health.
Vermitea is a lateral product of vermicomposting process which contains
nitrogen, phosphorous and many micronutrients, hormones; etc. Also it contains
earthworm enzyme and promote plant growth and yield and increase resistance
of plant to disease and pests. It also contains dissolved nutrients, some organic
acids and earthworm mucus (Singh et al., 2011).
The researcher observed that the snake plant is always put on outside of
the house as a decoration around it without knowing the benefits it gives in health
if it put inside the house, because of the reason of the slow growing and it
depends on the light is average or it is near the window that is exposed to
sunlight.
Thus, the plan of this research is to find if the vermitea can help in the
growth of the snake plant and observed, if there’s any changes in the width and
height in cm and proved if its effective to the plant within 42 days.
Significance of the Study

inquiries. The result may serves as an affiliated literature for their own study.
Hypothesis
It will increase the speed growth in the tallness and wideness with the help
of the vermitea.
Statement of the Problem
This study is to aim to determine the effect of vermitea as growth
enhancer for Snake plant (sansevieria).
1. What is the effect of vermitea as a growth enhancer in terms of length
(in cm) and width (in cm) for snake plant after 42 days.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
Vermitea
Vermitea or known as worm tea, is a nutrient-rich liquid produced through
the process of vermicomposting, which involves the breakdown of organic matter
by earthworms. The resulting liquid is a potent fertilizer that provides numerous
benefits when used to enhance the growth of snake plants.

Vermicompost
Vermicompost is a digestion product of organic material by earthworms,
has been widely reported to have a more positive effect on plant growth and
plant health than conventional compost. A study was conducted to investigate
the effects of different vermicompost elutriates (aerated compost teas) on soils
and plant growth. The teas were analyzed by chemical, microbiological, and
molecular methods accompanied by plant growth tests at laboratory and field
scale. The number of microorganisms in the teas increased during the extraction
process and was affected by substrate addition. The vermicompost tea found to
increase plant growth best under laboratory tests was applied to cereals (wheat
and barley) and vegetables (Raphanus sativus, Rucola selvatica, and Pisum
sativum) in a field study. The results revealed no effects of tea application on
plant yield; however, sensoric tests indicated an improvement in crop quality. The
soils from laboratory and field studies were investigated to detect possible
microbial or chemical changes.
Vermicompost teas (VCT) are documented to increase plant growth and
yield and reduce plant fungal and bacterial diseases and nematode infestation in
the soil. However, the underlying mechanisms for these results remain obscure.
Radioimmnoassay was used to identify and quantify phytohormones present in
commercially prepared “growth-promoting” VCT. Isopentenyladenine (IPA) and
indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) were detected in VCT, along with a low amount of

| Page 1
abscisic acid (ABA). Comparison of effects of VCT applied at the recommended
rate with IPA applied at an amount equivalent to that supplied in the VCT
treatment provided evidence that IPA increased Lycopersicon esculentum
vegetative biomass, whereas the VCT increased fruit number per plant and fruit
size.
