The children are making chocolate cornflakes. SH has the ingredients.

Please ask your TA to melt the chocolate and butter before the lesson.

I suggest 2 x 12 children per group. One with the TA and one with the teacher.

Children to record the making of the choc cornflakes as they will be writing a set of
instructions on how to do so.

The children will be able to help by pouring the butter/chocolate/cornflakes into the
bowl and mixing it together. Then they can help by scooping it into their own cake paper
holder.

After this, the children should discuss the steps taken with a partner and record them
on the graphic organiser using drawings and key words.

Grammar warm up: apostrophes for contraction

The children have been talking very quickly and have squeezed together some
of their words. Can you change the words which have apostrophes in so that
they say one word rather than two?

Lesson 2

LI: To make chocolate cornflake cakes

SC: To list what is needed to make chocolate
cornflake cakes

SC: To retell how to make chocolate cornflake cakes

SC: To eat a chocolate cornflake cake

Today, we are going to be making chocolate
cornflake cakes which we can eat after we
have made them!

We will be writing a set of instructions

tomorrow so we will need to record ourselves
making the cakes.

There will be 4 groups, each with 6 children.

2 working with the teacher and 2 with the TA.

Let’s get into groups of 6

Find your group

Find a table
Sit quietly
iPad

You will need 1 iPad per group to record a

time lapse. This will help you to remember
what you need and how you made the
cakes!
Find a sensible place to put it and start
recording.

First of all, I need to know what I need to make the cakes.

I need:
● A mixing bowl
● A spoon
● Cake paper holders
● Scales

I also need to think about the ingredients! For each group

we need:
● 50g of butter
● 100g of melted chocolate
● 3 tablespoons of golden syrup
● 100g of cornflakes
Making the chocolate
cornflakes
We will now make the chocolate cornflakes. In your pairs,
watch and record what is being done. Your partner may
want to make some notes as you will be writing this out
as a set of instructions soon!

This is what we are aiming for… After we

have made them, we have to leave them for
15 minutes before we can… EAT THEM!

The end result!

How did it go? Did you manage to make the chocolate
cornflakes?

Draw pictures
and write key
words in the
boxes.

Record the steps on the graphic organiser. We will

use this to help us to write our instructions.
Plenary

Now we have made the chocolate cornflakes and

talked about how we made them, it is time to…
eat them!
Make sure you have recorded this and have
written down what we needed.
We will be writing this out this week. What
features do an instruction text have?
