ICT Scheme
Introduction
We are living in a digital world that is constantly evolving. ICT has an impact on nearly all aspect of
our lives- from working to socializing, learning to playing. As technology becomes more and more
embedded in our culture, we must provide our learners with relevant and contemporary
experiences that allow them to successfully engage with technology and prepare them for life
after school. The ICT curriculum has to prepare our young learners with ICT skills and competencies
for the emerging knowledge society, helping them develop their capacity to solve problems in
digital environments.
This document presents the ICT curriculum from Grade 7 to Grade 9 in the context of the nine
year continuous basic schooling. It sets forth what learners are expected to acquire as skills,
knowledge and comprehension in ICT. It also lays the basis for using ICT so as to enhance learning
across the curriculum. It serves as a learning tool: the course content, information on how to plan
work and develop classroom-based resources are presented. It is a continuation of the Grade 1 to
6 ICT curriculum. The ICT syllabus and the achievement criteria developed for each grade and level
take into consideration the requirements of 21st century competencies.
The 21st century skills are a set of abilities that learners need to develop in order to succeed in the
ICT age where sharing, access, collaboration and communication are enabled through technology.
ICT skills are essential to learners in order to prepare them for a knowledge-based economy. With
ICT as one of the pillars of our economy, teaching of ICT is ever more important for preparing our
learners to be part of this digital world.
Twenty-first century skills encompass learning skills, literacy skills, and life skills. ICT provides the
necessary tools for the development of those skills in learners. Through ICT, learners are
empowered with the tools to think critically by accessing an abundance of information in a variety
of forms and by processing them in meaningful ways. ICT also enables them to be creative with
the support of various tools and to solve problem and generate knowledge in an interdisciplinary
and collaborative manner. Moreover, learners get the opportunities to work and communicate
with each other. Literacy skills, which are also one component of the 21st century skills set, are
developed through ICT skills where information literacy, media literacy and technology literacy are
taught right from Grade 1 and where learners progress gradually to higher grades. ICT also helps
learners to be flexible, to take initiative, and develop social skills through computer mediated
interactions which are the components of life skills.
