Chemistry
Course Outline 2020-2021
RATIONALE:
Chemistry is the study of the nature, composition, properties and interactions of matter. A study of Chemistry gives insight into the world around us and many of the phenomena we
observe. It is important that students be able to assess their interactions with the world they live in and develop skills necessary to think critically and solve problems they encounter.
The third form Chemistry course has been revised to include content from the National Standards Curriculum (NSC) as well as aspects of the Caribbean Secondary Education
Certificate (CSEC) Chemistry syllabus. The topics outlined seek to facilitate students' understanding of the fundamentals of Chemistry as well as develop skills and attitudes necessary
for becoming proficient in Chemistry at the introductory level. Students’ mastery of the objectives at this level will give them a good foundation for exploring the world around them
and, if they wish, to continue a path related to Science.
GOALS:
Upon completion of this course, students will:
● Understand the existence of materials such as solids, liquids and gases, the particulate nature of matter, and simple chemical reactions that change one material into another.
● Apply scientific knowledge and processes to the solution of real-world problems.
● Use mathematics as a tool for problem-solving, and as a means of expressing and/or modelling scientific theories.
● Appreciate the influence and limitations of science with consideration for ethical issues.
● Demonstrate a positive attitude towards the use of scientific language.
● Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills in order to foster good working relationships.

English Literature
Course Outline 2020-2021
RATIONALE: The study of literature is necessary because education is and should be about more than passing on information; it is also
about fostering critical thinking skills and helping us to understand the world. Examining literature as an art form allows students to
explore the nuances and conventions of language, considering how it shapes perceptions of reality, creates new possibilities, and challenges
preconceptions. In reading literature, students encounter the experiences of others and investigate their own minds and hearts. Literature
brings together ethical, affective, cognitive, historical, aesthetic, and even playful elements of our lives. It contains the collected knowledge
about humanity, our beliefs, concerns, feelings, self-perceptions, philosophies, and assumptions and interaction with our world. This
academic year will be aimed at helping to develop students’ analytical, interpretive and ability to write judiciously.
GOALS:
● Students should be able to make specific distinctions between all three genres.
● Through various discussions about assigned literary texts, students should develop an appreciation for the opinions of others.
● Through the exploration of the different elements of each genre, students should be able to critically comment on assigned literary
texts.
● Students should be able to connect literary texts with the world around them.
● By engaging in several interactive and collaborative activities, students should develop an appreciation for all three genres of
literature.
● Students should be able to write an effect on literary analysis.

WOLMER'S BOYS' SCHOOL
Department of Geography
3rd Form
Subject: Geography
Course Outline 2020-2021
RATIONALE:
Geography is a broad and integrating discipline that brings together important aspects of physical and social sciences as
well as impinging on the humanities. As a discipline, Geography can be viewed as a subject that is subdivided into two
broad and separate fields: Physical Geography and Human Geography. This curriculum continually explores the
processes of Physical Geography, carefully explaining the interrelationships of various phenomena as well as human
environment interaction, especially where our resources and industries are concerned. There is a preliminary assessment
of the resources and economic activities in our country, followed by an exploration of various industries from which
most of our earnings are generated. This exposure will give students an insight on the implication human activities has
on the physical environment, vice versa. There is an ensuing assessment of the structure of the earth and a systematic
presentation of the major components of Physical Geography with special emphasis on plate tectonics, associated
processes, land forms and distribution of earthquakes. At this level, the students are also exposed to the inter
connectedness of earth science which includes caring for the earth. Thus earth science allows for deeper appreciation of
the earth and its sphere. Subsequently, Geography at this level provides students with a solid background on which to
build their future studies and or careers.
Page | 1
GOALS: On completion of this year students should be able to:
(b) Promote an understanding of the processes at work in the Natural and Human Systems in our environment.
(c) Stimulate interest in Natural and Human systems and their interaction with the environment.

Department of Information Communication Technology and Music
Form: Third Form
Subject: Music
Course Outline 2020-2021
RATIONALE: To gain a direct experience of music through listening and appraising, performing, and
creating/composing. Music making comprises more than just vocal production or fingers playing an instrument;
a child learning about music has to tap into multiple skill sets, often simultaneously within the educational
experience.
The study and interaction with music does not solely make one competent on an instrument or enhances one’s
vocal ability, but rather offers more astounding impact on the brain.
A. Keen listeners, who are able to appreciate musical expression through an understanding of musical
elements and how they may be combined.
B. Competent performers, who are able to prepare and present music to a critical audience as a
demonstration of skill and artistry.
C. Creative practitioners, who are able to combine and sequence the elements of music to express artistic
ideas and feelings.

WOLMER'S BOYS' SCHOOL
Department of Physical Education
Third Form
Subject: Physical Education & Sport
Course Outline 2020-2021
RATIONALE:
Movement is essential for daily functioning. Knowledge of what, where and how the body can move is critical
for quality human existence. Physical Education, as an integral part of the general education process,
contributes to an individual’s awareness and understanding of the elements and dimensions of movement and
forms the basis for the learning of sport skills. Sport, on the other hand, is viewed as a vehicle for the
enhancement of fundamental motor skills and the development of complex skills learnt through a properly
structured Physical Education and Sport programme. It is governed by formal or informal rules that involve
competition and may be pursued for recreation or reward while promoting healthy lifestyle practices. Sport is
recognised as an instrument for the promotion of international peace and understanding and many local,
regional and international sporting bodies have embraced shared values through sport.
The study of Physical Education and Sport, therefore, not only allows students to work individually and
cooperatively in the theoretical and practical components of the subject but also assists them in developing
critical life skills. As a curricular inclusion, it provides students of varying abilities with experiences that
facilitate physical, social, intellectual, cultural, spiritual and emotional growth. Skills related to
decision-making, problem solving and critical thinking and the use of sport technology are acquired by students
undertaking a course of study in Physical Education and Sport.
Page | 1
GOALS:
● To achieve a gradual increase of the development of the physical capacities, the sport motive
abilities, theoretical knowledge and habits of hygiene that allow to carry out with success the tasks
that are required by the society, the school and the family in the practical order.
● To participate in an enthusiastic way in the physical, sport and recreational activities organized by the
school, the community or on their own initiative in their free time as a result of knowing the
importance of these for their health.

RATIONALE:
Religious Education serves as the flagship subject championing and promoting the teaching of religious thinking skills, renowned civic
virtues and moral values such as integrity, responsibility, respect, justice, honesty and equality. The aforementioned virtues and values,
among others, are utilized to shape the habits and hearts of students, teaching them what it means to be good and virtuous citizens of the
highest moral integrity. The utilization of modern approaches such as the thematic and phenomenological approach, among others, enables
students to objectively explore and acknowledge the diverse concepts of the divine, the inherent worth and dignity of all beings, pathways
to spiritual development and finding meaning and purpose in life.
These approaches not only address the “who” and “what” of the subject but also the “why.” As such, they lend themselves readily to
integration with all other subjects-not only the Arts but, also Science and Technology. This makes the subject more relevant, and leaves
much room for creativity/self-expression and understanding on the path of both students and teachers. Religion has been an integral part of
people’s everyday lives; students are therefore helped to mature in relation to their own patterns of beliefs and behaviours, culture and laws
as well as that of others. As such, Religious Education accommodates a broadened and balanced perspective of worldwide and Caribbean
religions that helps students to understand more clearly how the beliefs and practices of these groups have affected, shape and influence

The theme under study for third form is Stewardship. The word ‘steward’ has come to be used to mean someone entrusted with
responsibility and management e.g. of his/her master’s or mistress’s household. This definition implies a sense of responsibility, trust, and
accountability. It also implies that the person on whom the responsibility is placed possesses such qualities as honesty, integrity, industry,
loving care for that over which he/she is placed. Across the religions of the world, adherents have felt that one of their responses to deity
within their religion is to acknowledge the various gifts given them, and to be good stewards of those gifts. Stewardship also has to do with
the environment, with matters such as social justice, with being good citizens, with developing our natural talents, with caring and sharing,
with living and letting live, with loving and giving. It should be evident among us in our families, in our institutions and in the wider
community. It is personal as well as corporate. Stewardship, rightly undertaken, makes for a better world in which to live.
