SPECTRA® PIPE CUTTER FIELD ASSEMBLY and ARMING

1.0 DESCRIPTION
1.1 Hunting Titan’s Spectra® Pipe Cutters can be used to cut standard pipe or high chrome (no limits), fiberglass and
plastic coated pipe without any special considerations.
1.2 They are designed for maximum interchangeability with accessory equipment commonly used in pipe recovery
operations.
a) The top of the cutter assembly is equipped with a 1-3/16”–12 box thread for connecting to most extension
mandrels and shock subs being used in the field.
b) A rubber sleeve (DETO-1208-BOOT) is used for mounting the detonator (DETO-A161-AP). The preferred
option is to use the Hunting Titan pre-wired detonator (DETO-D1208-T).
c) There are two options for connecting the tubing cutter assembly to the firing head/CCL/or other devices and
is up to the user to decide. Specific arming procedures are essential, as detailed in Sections 4.0 and 5.0.
1.3 One inline bow spring centralizer must be mounted immediately above the pipe cutter (or shock mandrel) and one
between the cable head and weight bar(s) to ensure a properly centralized toolstring. One bladed centralizer is
permanently mounted on the bottom of the cutter to guarantee maximum performance. DO NOT REMOVE OR
ATTEMPT TO FURTHER TIGHTEN THE ATTACHMENT BOLT. See details illustrated in Figures 1.

4.0 FIELD ASSEMBLY / ARMING PROCEDURE through mandrel option

This section describes assembly using an extension mandrel or shock sub (HES-100158266) with no button contact. The
following outlines procedures that are defined using the Electrically Before Ballistically Armed (EBBA) guidelines in API RP-67.
4.1 Pre-check wireline circuit, cable head, CCL and any adapters for continuity and insulation integrity prior to off-loading
the pipe cutter assembly.
4.2 In accordance with API RP-67 guidelines, turn off radios, welders and cathodic protection devices. Turn off the
electrical generator of the perforating unit. Be sure cable safety switch is in SAFE or OFF mode. Measure stray voltages
between unit to ground, rig to ground and wellhead to ground, ensuring no stray voltages are present. Electrically
bond perforating unit, rig and wellhead with grounding straps.
ENSURE THAT NO VOLTAGE IS PRESENT BETWEEN WIRELINE CONDUCTOR AND GROUND, USING AN
APPROVED BLASTERS MULTIMETER.
4.3 If using detonator (DETO-A161-AP or equivalent), remove from its transport container and packaging, and install into
rubber sleeve (DETO-1208-BOOT). Ensure the detonator leads remain shorted and that its length is set correctly to 2-
1/2” (63 mm).
4.4 Feed the detonator wires through the extension mandrel or shock sub.
4.5 Install rubber sleeve over end of extension mandrel or shock sub.

4.6 Install safety sub (9000-150-022) onto extension mandrel or shock sub hand tight. Trim detonator wires to
appropriate length and then connect these wires to firing head. The ground connection should be well fixed, such as
provided by a 10-32 screw. Many misfires are caused by a defective ground connection.
4.7 Make up extension mandrel or shock sub assembly to firing head, making sure that loose wires are not damaged.
Attach the leads of a blaster’s multimeter to the top electrical contact and the outside of the firing head. The
detonator circuit resistance should measure 49–61 Ohms.

4.8 BE SURE THAT THE SAFETY KEY IS VISIBLE AT THE ARMING SITE. Assure that after the tool string is attached to the
wireline that no voltage exists at the bottom electrical connection. Connect the firing head/detonator assembly to the
tool string. The system is now electrically armed.
4.9 Remove the safety sub. Carefully install the Spectra Pipe Cutter assembly over the detonator assembly. Make sure the
O-ring (0111-568-V95) is in place. Snug the tool joint with non-sparking wrenches. The pipe cutter is now ballistically
armed and ready to run into the well.

5.0 FIELD ASSEMBLY / ARMING PROCEDURE pre-wired detonator option

This section describes assembly using a shock sub (HES-100008258) with button contact, high pressure isolation bar (9000-
150-030) with button contact or Spectra detonator firing head (1012-000-200). The following outlines procedures that are
defined using the Electrically Before Ballistically Armed (EBBA) guidelines in API RP-67.
5.1 Pre-check wireline circuit, cable head, CCL and any adapters for continuity and insulation integrity prior to off-loading
the pipe cutter assembly.
5.2 In accordance with API RP-67 guidelines, turn off radios, welders and cathodic protection devices.
5.3 Install the steel thread protector (3924-12P-FBE) into top of shock sub (HES-100008258), isolation bar (9000-150-030)
or firing head (1012-000-200) hand tight. The thread protector acts as an electrical shunt plug and must be utilized.
5.4 Remove detonator assembly (DETO-D1208-P) from its transport container and packaging. Ensure the detonator length
is correct at 2-1/2” (63 mm).
5.5 Remove the shunt wire from the detonator and install it onto the shock sub or isolation bar.

6.0 DISARMING / DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURES

The following procedures refer to when a live cutter assembly is pulled out of hole to surface. It is assumed that all guidelines
in API RP-67 are being followed with respect to radio silence procedures, correct grounding of the perforating unit, logging
cable and rig/wellhead, and the safety key being visible at the disarming site.
6.1 Disconnect the pipe cutter assembly from the extension mandrel, isolation bar (9000-150-030), shock sub (HES-
100158266 or HES-100008258) or Spectra firing head (1012-000-200) and place it in a secondary explosives remnants
box.
6.2 Screw the safety sub (9000-150-022) onto the shock sub hand tight.
6.3 With the safety sub still attached, remove the firing head/shock sub assembly from the wireline toolstring. Screw the
shunt plug (3924-12P-FPE) onto the firing head/shock sub assembly hand tight.
6.4 When using detonator DETO-A161-AP (or equivalent):
6.4.1 Unscrew the extension mandrel or shock sub from the firing head.
6.4.2 Cut the two detonator wires and shunt them together.
6.4.3 Remove the safety sub from the extension mandrel or shock sub. Remove detonator and place it in a
primary explosives remnants box.
6.5 When using detonator DETO-D1208-P:
6.5.1 Unscrew the isolation bar or shock sub from the firing head.
6.5.2 Screw the shunt plug (3924-12P-FPE) onto the isolation bar or shock sub.
6.5.3 Remove the safety sub from the isolation bar or shock sub. Remove detonator and place it in a primary
explosives remnants box.
6.6 If the pipe cutter and hardware are to be used again, both O-rings (0111-214-V95) on either end of the shock sub or
isolation mandrel need to be changed as they are prone to damage when the toolstring is unscrewed.
