Dear Taylor,

I had a wonderful trip with my parents to the sedge mat weaving village in Hoai Nhon Town. Binh
Dinh province – my homeland is well-known for Tay Son martial arts, and especially many spectacular
craft villages. One of them is the sedge mat weaving village, the one that I visited a month ago. This is
the traditional local profession. Despite the fact that the mats are made quite easy and simple, the
craftsmen have to grow and harvest sedge to make them, it takes times. Plain mats are woven from a
undyed white sedge. The weaving of flower mats is much more sophisticated. Flower mats there do
not have to be woven in white before they are used to print flowers on the background, but must
choose sedge yarn for dying and color depending on the owner: red, blue, green or yellow. I saw the
craftsman dip sedge fibers into coloring products. The color sedge firber, after having been drying,
were woven into flower mats. In the four corners around the mats have colorful patterns of many
types, the outer brace have 2 lines, either red or blue looks very beautiful and elegant. And I made
myself a mat! Although it’s not as beautiful as on the craftmen’s mats, I had fun doing it too. And so
wonderful, the sedge mat weaving village has been recognized at a traditional craft village by the
People’s Committee of Binh Dinh Province. For foreigners tourists, they can see the magnificence of
Viet Nam traditional craft villages: simple but deep, unique and delicate.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Yours truly,

Hung
