Goal: To reflect your understanding of how change may impact the evolution of civilization
driven by opportunities related to scientific innovation.
Learners will work in groups to complete the task.
The purpose of this task is to investigate and respond to the question; To what extent would
the world have been better off without the Abbasid Empire?
Action Plan:
Role: You are a college student studying history.
Audience: Professor and peer students
Situation: You are a college student studying history. During one of your courses, your
professor assigned you homework to write about one of the three empires. You need to
investigate and collect evidence for five defining features of the empire throughout the
milestones of their ruling era.
You are also given the following question to gather information and base your findings
upon
To what extent would the world have been better off without the Abbasid Empire?
Product: Your final product is criterion B investigation template, a graphic organizer
representing your findings and a 4 to 7 minutes oral recording of your explanation as a group.

Questions:
Main Question: To what extent would the world be better off without the Abbasid caliphate?
Relevance of Main Question: The question reveals the significance of the Abbasid caliphate, and it effects
on the world. However, it also encourages all minds to think of an alternate timeline without the Abbasid
caliphate. In the form of lines would this new timeline be parallel or perpendicular. In other words, has
the Abbasid caliphate contributed to the world as we know it, or was it just another burden, an obstacle
to human advancement

The above table provides the data necessary to analyze the purchase
power of citizens by different available products. Firstly, it is evident
that Baghdad’s unique economic properties allowed for its produce to
be much cheaper hinting at lower inflation rates and more seamless
currency exchange systems. This is backed by data as in 760 wheat cost
0.0021 in modern day Cairo but it only cost 0.0009 in Baghdad.
Secondly, it is also evident that Baghdad had lower wages because of its
unique properties therefore allowing the Abbasid caliphate to save
money thus increasing revenue and bolstering the economic properties
of the empire.
In conclusion, salaries played a major role in dictating produce value
which in turn either bolstered or held back the economy of the empire
directly affecting its citizens especially civillians.
In this task I had many strengths, this allowed me to excel in my performance. Firstly, I was able to
correctly utilize the given layout and apply it for its intended uses. Secondly, through the ATL making
inferences and drawing conclusions I was able to compile a simple conclusion that in turn answers the
main focused research question. Thirdly, I utilized many Ib traits which allowed me to excel in my task, I
utilized the thinker trait when analyzing and interpreting data, I utilized the reflective trait when I
reflected about my performance, I utilized both the knowledgeable and inquirer traits when I researched
about the topic, inquired about it, and gained knowledge towards it. Fourthly, I was able to apply
effective self-management skills by managing my time to create a threshold of efficiency that must be
met at all times; preventing me from overworking myself and also preventing me from underworking
myself allowing me to complete this task and excel in it. Fifthly, I was able to utilize visual
representations heavily throughout my task further amplifying my ability to transfer ideas to my target
audience, this was done through the addition of a handful of visual tools such as graphs, charts, and
tables which provided data in a simpler manner allowing readers to make conclusions more efficiently,
there were also videos and images which prevented the target audience from getting bored, and it
served as an effective method of sharing knowledge. Lastly, I was able to fully understand the topic
which not only boosted my performance but it also amplified my performance in it allowing me to excel.
There were many challenges when it came to this task. Firstly, the trustworthiness of some sources was
questionable. This was due to the absence of an author, or due to the absence of credentials that belong
to the author, some sources were also outdated, some sources were also published commercially.
Secondly, I was not able to fully interpret the task from first glance, understanding the task required a
strong in-depth analysis which I conducted as to understand the task fully and persevere. Thirdly, the
application of self-management skills presented itself as an enormous challenge (to be honest this
reflection was done at 4 AM Tuesday 12/12/2023); this was the product of procrastination which I hope
to stop in the near future as this habit has limited my abilities to perform and excel in this task. Fourthly,
I faced some difficulties when applying the thinker Ib Learner trait but through perseverance and
patience I was able to fully apply this skill to the topic and to interpret/analyze the data researched.
Lastly, some technical challenges arose throughout the task which challenged me as they took some time
however, I was able to research the fixes quickly and apply them effectively

Quote:
“Building an empire is a little bit about the king and everything about the kingdom. A true king’s success
is the success of his people, not himself”- Monty G Hooke
When taking a direct look at this quote it is clear that the deduction of the topic is that an empire is the
people behind it not the rulers above it. This can be applied to the task as the Abbasid empire mainly
depended on the people’s unification to drive its success and it is deduced that when military conquest
reaches the Spanish incursions the empire fell due to the citizens whom were not of Islamic origin and
did not back the empire making it extremely easy for opposing empires to invade and destroy the empire
such as what happened when the Mongol empire invaded the Abbasid empire.
Jevon’s Paradox
The above image known as Jevon’s paradox is a graph representing the direct relation between price and
quantity. As quantity decreases price also decreases, which is a concept known as elastic demand. The
d Q/Q
formula for the concept is e= . This is applied and relevant to the Abbasid economy and markets
d P /P
as because of the empires expansion, demand for different products increased, thus, through heavy
investments reforms were made to industry and mainly to the agricultural industry. Price was relevant to
quantity as both were low during 720 as wheat in Cairo was worth 0.0021 however as the empire
expanded the quantity increased and therefore the price increased. Thus, in conclusion to maintain the
economical state of an empire regular changes and amendments are required to fully maintain the
economy, this conclusion is derived from the example of Jevon’s paradox.
