Questions:

Main Question: To what extent would the world be better off without the Abbasid caliphate?

Relevance of Main Question: The question reveals the significance of the Abbasid caliphate, and it effects
on the world. However, it also encourages all minds to think of an alternate timeline without the Abbasid
caliphate. In the form of lines would this new timeline be parallel or perpendicular. In other words, has
the Abbasid caliphate contributed to the world as we know it, or was it just another burden, an obstacle
to human advancement

Question No. Question Relevance Field of Study

1 Analyze the economic This question is Economics
system of the Abbasid relevant to the topic as
caliphate it analyzes the
economic system of the
Abbasid caliphate not
just providing a window
into the factors which
gave it success but also
shining a light on the
factors which caused
the economy to
deteriorate overtime.
Thus, this question is
able to provide a
general understanding
towards the question
and it can also lay the
way for much more
advanced analysis of
the economy.
2 Interpret the religious Religion was the core of Religion, Culture
norms applied towards the Abbasid empire,
banking and finance whether it was finance,
or marriage, or even
food, religion always
dictated norms and
laws. It was the pillar
which upheld the
empire for so long.
Thus, it is extremely
important to question
the religion of the
empire and its cultural
and social implications
creating a state of
economic balance that
has never been
achieved and will never
be achieved anywhere
in the near future.
3 Evaluate the An empire’s goal is to Globalization and
international reach of always go international, Sustainability
the Abbasid caliphate to take control of the
economy globe. The Abbasids
were able to do just
that by gaining
economic control of
the world, this is
because of its unique
position placing it at
the center of the world,
a continental core of
which controls all
monetary and
economic practices.
Therefore, to know
whether the empire’s
economy was
successful it is required
that the international

4 State and identify the This question one Trade
different trade routes might say is simple and
created in the Abbasid only scratches the
Caliphate surface of the topic.
However, trade routes
were not a product of
the empire rather they
were only authorized
by it, therefore, it is
evident that these
trade routs were a
private commodity
created through supply
and demand of
different industries.
Thus, delving too deep
will only derail the
main topic and
therefore this question
only provides the most
basic of facts for
knowledge purposes.
5 Explore taxation Taxation was the Taxation
practices developed by epitome of revenue for
the Abbasid Caliphate the Abbasid caliphate,
not only was it able to
tax Muslims through
zakat, but it also taxed
non-Muslims creating a
paradox of revenue
that utilizes belief as
the driver pin of
revenue. However, it is
also important to take
notice that most taxes
were invested right
back into the citizens
themselves which
directly led to the
empires thriving state.
6 Explore the total This question explores Revenue, Economy

number tells your
enemies if they should

your allies if they

Therefore, this
question provides the
most important data

can have.
7 Identify the purchase This question is deep- Purchase, Produce

the effects of this
economy, whether it

view of the citizens

needed to answer the
main research question
8 Analyze the main This is the question Industry

economy links peoples’
livelihoods, their
expertise, their roles in
societies to that of
their roles in the

this question is
significant not just in
the answer it holds but
in the contents which it
contains.

Reflection:

In this task I had many strengths, this allowed me to excel in my performance. Firstly, I was able to
correctly utilize the given layout and apply it for its intended uses. Secondly, through the ATL making
inferences and drawing conclusions I was able to compile a simple conclusion that in turn answers the
main focused research question. Thirdly, I utilized many Ib traits which allowed me to excel in my task, I
utilized the thinker trait when analyzing and interpreting data, I utilized the reflective trait when I
reflected about my performance, I utilized both the knowledgeable and inquirer traits when I researched
about the topic, inquired about it, and gained knowledge towards it. Fourthly, I was able to apply
effective self-management skills by managing my time to create a threshold of efficiency that must be
met at all times; preventing me from overworking myself and also preventing me from underworking
myself allowing me to complete this task and excel in it. Fifthly, I was able to utilize visual
representations heavily throughout my task further amplifying my ability to transfer ideas to my target
audience, this was done through the addition of a handful of visual tools such as graphs, charts, and
tables which provided data in a simpler manner allowing readers to make conclusions more efficiently,
there were also videos and images which prevented the target audience from getting bored, and it
served as an effective method of sharing knowledge. Lastly, I was able to fully understand the topic
which not only boosted my performance but it also amplified my performance in it allowing me to excel.

There were many challenges when it came to this task. Firstly, the trustworthiness of some sources was
questionable. This was due to the absence of an author, or due to the absence of credentials that belong
to the author, some sources were also outdated, some sources were also published commercially.
Secondly, I was not able to fully interpret the task from first glance, understanding the task required a
strong in-depth analysis which I conducted as to understand the task fully and persevere. Thirdly, the
application of self-management skills presented itself as an enormous challenge (to be honest this
reflection was done at 4 AM Tuesday 12/12/2023); this was the product of procrastination which I hope
to stop in the near future as this habit has limited my abilities to perform and excel in this task. Fourthly,
I faced some difficulties when applying the thinker Ib Learner trait but through perseverance and
patience I was able to fully apply this skill to the topic and to interpret/analyze the data researched.
Lastly, some technical challenges arose throughout the task which challenged me as they took some time
however, I was able to research the fixes quickly and apply them effectively

Quote:

“Building an empire is a little bit about the king and everything about the kingdom. A true king’s success
is the success of his people, not himself”- Monty G Hooke

When taking a direct look at this quote it is clear that the deduction of the topic is that an empire is the
people behind it not the rulers above it. This can be applied to the task as the Abbasid empire mainly
depended on the people’s unification to drive its success and it is deduced that when military conquest
reaches the Spanish incursions the empire fell due to the citizens whom were not of Islamic origin and
did not back the empire making it extremely easy for opposing empires to invade and destroy the empire
such as what happened when the Mongol empire invaded the Abbasid empire.

Jevon’s Paradox
The above image known as Jevon’s paradox is a graph representing the direct relation between price and
quantity. As quantity decreases price also decreases, which is a concept known as elastic demand. The
d Q/Q
formula for the concept is e= . This is applied and relevant to the Abbasid economy and markets
d P /P
as because of the empires expansion, demand for different products increased, thus, through heavy
investments reforms were made to industry and mainly to the agricultural industry. Price was relevant to
quantity as both were low during 720 as wheat in Cairo was worth 0.0021 however as the empire
expanded the quantity increased and therefore the price increased. Thus, in conclusion to maintain the
economical state of an empire regular changes and amendments are required to fully maintain the
economy, this conclusion is derived from the example of Jevon’s paradox.
