SUPPOSITORY

DEFINITION

Introducing the medication into the rectum or


vagina in the form of suppository is termed
insertion of suppositories.
TYPES OF SUPPOSITORY

1. Rectal suppository
2. Urethral suppository
3. Vaginal suppository
4. Nasal suppository
5. Ear cones
PURPOSES

• To stimulate peristalsis.
• To promote defecation.
• To act as analgesic and antipyretic.
• Antiseptics in feminine hygiene.
CONTRAINDICATIONS

Rectal contraindication:-
1. Rectal surgery
2. Active rectal bleeding
Vaginal contraindication:-
1. Vaginal infections
NURSING ASSESSMENT

1.Assess for any history of allergy.


2.Assess for Any rectal or vaginal
discomfort, bleeding or surgery.
EQUIPMENTS

• A TRAY CONTAINING,
- Medication card
- Rectal/vaginal suppositories
- lubricating jelly
- Clean gloves
- Kidney tray / tissue paper
- Screen
- hand rub
PROCEDURE

• Read the medication card and take the necessary medication


(suppository).
• Check the name, dose and frequency of the medication against the
doctors order sheet and medication card.
• Assemble the equipments at the bedside.
• Wash hands.
• Explain the procedure to the patient.
• Provide privacy.
• Anal suppository:-
-position the patient in left lateral position with knee flexed.
- Drape the patient and expose the anus.
- open the could suppository ; hold the suppository and apply a
small amount of lubricant to the edge of suppository.
- Lubricate the gloved index finger .
- Ask the patient to take a deep breath through the mouth and
insert the suppository into the rectal canal beyond the internal
sphincter about 4 inches for audult and 2 inches for child.
- withdraw the finger and wipe the anus.
• Vaginal suppository:-
- Have patient void prior to procedure.
- Position patient on back with legs slightly bend and feet flat on the bed.
- Wear clean gloves.
- Remove suppository from wrapper and apply lubricant to suppository.
- With non-dominant hand gently separate labial folds with gloves index
finger of dominant hand, insert lubricate suppository about 8-10cm along
posterior vaginal wall.
- Withdraw fingers and wipe away excess lubricant.
• Ask the patient to remain in the same position for 10-15minutes.
• Position the patient comfortably.
• Replace and clean articles.
• Wash hands.
• Document the procedure .
# Record the date, time and name of the suppository inserted.
# Record the patients response after the procedure.
# Report any pertinent findings inform to nurse in-charge.
SAMPLE DOCUMENTATION

• Explained the procedure to the patient. Positioned him/her in left lateral


position. Instructed him/her to take a deep breath during insertion of
suppository. Suppository Dulcolex 10 mg was administered intrarectally as
prescribed.
• Patient cooperated well.
