Title: 9 truths about Gods righteousness/ justification

Romans 3:21-26

21But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the
Law and the Prophets,
[22]even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no
distinction;
[23]for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
[24]being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
[25]whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate
His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
[26]for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and
the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Justification..definition.. to declare someone righteous..not to make someone righteous. A judicial

declaration. According to Martin luther, Justification is a tipping point of the gospel. This a doctrine a
church could stand or fall. Every church who does not hold this doctrine is a false church. We cannot
afford to be wrong of this

Verse 21 start with the words “But now” These words provide transition, a strong contrast from
condemnation to justification

1. Apart from the law: . It means simply that justification could not be accomplished by personal
obedience to the Law, and that it must be accomplished in some other way. The law cannot save us, but
God reveals a righteousness that will save us.

This is the essence of God’s plan of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is a salvation that is offered apart from
the law, apart from our own earning and deserving, apart from our own merits. God’s righteousness is
not offered to us as something to take up the slack between our ability to keep the law and God’s
perfect standard. It is not given to supplement our own righteousness, it is given completely apart from
our own attempted righteousness.

2. It is witnessed by the law and the Prophets or in OT. 21c.

Rom 1:2, which he promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures. What is the
promised all about? It says concerning his Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the
flesh.
Gen 3;15. Known a the first gospel. A Messiah prophecy foreshadowing of the coming of Christ. This
messiah, who would crush the head of the serpent. Ultimately defeat the power of sin and evil through
His redemptive work on the cross.

gen 15:6, john 8 Abraham knew it was Christ),

psalm 32:5,

isai 53:11, after he has suffered..this is Isaiah’s prophecy of the suffering servant, Jesus Christ.

By the law - This expression here evidently denotes, as it did commonly among the Jews, the five books
of Moses.

Psalms 101:1 david says, The LORD says to my Lord sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your
footstool. the phrase the LORD says to my Lord contains two different Hebrews words. The first is
Yahweh and the second is adoni lord or master referring to messiah. V1 no one sit at the right hand of
Yahweh but Christ. He will triump His enemies and rule over them. He will be the priest forever, in the
order of melchizedek.

In Mat 22:44 Jesus quotes this verse in a discussion with the Pharisees in order to prove that the
messiah is more than David son; He is the Lord of David.

And the apostle means to say that this doctrine was found in those books

That it was found “in” those books; the apostle shows by the case of Abraham; Rom. 4; see also his
reasoning on Lev 18:5; Deu 30:12-14, in Rom 10:5-11; compare Exo 34:6-7.

And the prophets -Generally, the remainder of the Old Testament. The phrase “the Law and the
prophets” comprehended the whole of the Old Testament; Mat 5:17; Mat 11:13; Mat 22:40; Act
13:15; Act 28:23. That this doctrine was contained in the prophets, the apostle showed by the passage
quoted from Hab 2:4, in Rom 1:17, “The just shall live by faith.

3. It is provided by God. V22.. biblical evidence..

Rom8:29-30,

v33,34 1

cor 1:30

4 It is received by faith.. v22b, comes from Gods.. not faith + good works, baptism, church membership...

It is faith alone. This is a doctrine called of sola fide—faith alone—asserts that people receive
justification on the basis of their faith alone and not on the basis of their good works.

Eph 2:8-9
Gal. 2:16, yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ,
so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the
law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

According to Martin Luther, This faith alone, when based upon the sure promises of God, must save us;
as our text clearly explains. And in the light of it all, they must become fools who have taught us other
ways to become godly."

His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;

Introduction: summary of part 1

1. It isApart from the law
2. It is Witness by the OT
3. It is provided by God
4. It is received by faith

5. Justification is needed by all. V23. Says, for all have sin and fall short to the glory of God. There are
many definition of the bible that is used of sin. Here is the wonderful definition “ to fall short in the glory
of God”. We know that the chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever but man fall short
of that. He missed the mark.

Illustration: like an athlete who missed the prize.

No one is exempted of this. All of us. Thus all of us, Greek and Gentiles, is desperately in need of the
righteousness of God. Whether you are a religious or not, good or bad. Every single person in this world
is desperately in need of the righteousness of God. And this righteousness is revealed by God in Christ
alone.

6. Justification is a gift from God v24 says, and are justified by His grace as a gift.
When do we use the word gift? What season do we usually received gifts?
Similarly, when we are justified by His grace as a gift we receive with no work at all.
->Note the difference between wages and gift.

Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Moreover this gift is not temporal but eternal. How do you differentiate temporal from eternal?
Our life on earth is temporal but our life in heaven is eternal.

Illustration: a pinch of sand( countable) Versus sand in the sea shore( uncountable). So this gift of life is
uncountable, infinite, forever in Christ in heaven.

Objection: brother I am the one who received that gift that is still my work?
->The truth is, if God will not grant that gift to you by His Will you will never receive that gift even if how
hard you work for it.
->This is based upon the mercy of the giver.

So our justification is it God’s unmerited favor, it is act of Gods free grace.

It is free, undeserved gift, not merited by our obedience to the Law. This is the essence of the gospel.

7. Justification is acquired by Jesus Christ. V24 Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Again,
Paul’s gospel centers squarely in Christ Jesus. This gift is performed and accomplished by Christ.

It is Christ who purchased us with own blood, and to Him it becomes a matter of justice that those who
were given to him should be justified.
->1 cor 6:20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
->1 cor 7:23 you were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.
->Acts 20:28, overseers have to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

Salvation is possible because of the redemption found in Him. God cannot give us His righteousness
apart from Jesus Christ. The idea of redemption means that Jesus bought us; therefore, we belong to
Him. Paul expressed this thought in another letter: For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God
in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s (1Co 6:20).

25]whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.

Propitiation means appeasement, satisfaction of the “righteous” wrath or anger of God toward us.

Illustration: angry wife can be propitiated by giving chocolate, flowers, shoes or bags.

8. Justification is declared by God.

v[26]for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just
and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
We are passive, God is active. He is the one who actively justify the sinner to be declared righteous
before God. This is a legal decoration. [26]for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the
present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus

Here’s the truth when God declared

1. No one can change the declaration. No higher court can over rule His declaration.
2. This declaration is complete. Final and irrevocable.
Romans 8:1, there is now no condemnation..
Applications

1. If God is the author of justification there is no one can cancel this declaration. The moment God
declares us righteous in His justifying act no one can change His declaration. This is final and
irrevocable.
