INTRODUCTION
As a first-grade teacher, you are aware of the key role you play in your students’ lives.
What your students learn, and the attitudes about school that they form while in your
class, will influence their experiences throughout grade school and beyond. You know the
importance of making school fun as well as educational, and of review, reinforcement, and
applying content once it is learned. Daily Core Curriculum gets you and your class off to a
great start, and keeps your students’ skills sharp throughout the year.
Daily Core Curriculum provides your students with engaging starter activities to capture
interest at the beginning of the classroom day or start of a new subject. Each daily activity
includes key concepts in Language and Math—the two most critical subject areas in
the first grade—as well as a Did You Know? item that will spark further interest, creative
thought, and opportunity for sharing.
Daily Core Curriculum has been designed for any first-grade classroom, regardless of the
textbooks or other supplementary programs being used. Implementation of the Daily Core
Curriculum program is easy. Place the exercises for the day on the chalkboard, duplicate
the questions for students, and/or project them on an overhead projector by photocopying
the student pages as transparencies. Another option is to create a flip chart by binding
each day’s activities at the top. String or a dowel rod can be placed through the binding.
Then, the pages can simply be flipped each day. You might want to bind the activities one
month at a time. Additionally, you can use the appropriate starter in the content area of
your classroom’s schedule.
There are many other uses for this book. It can be used for those students who finish their
other class assignments early, or as part of a center. If you are interested in creating more
interest, correct answers can be acknowledged each week. Put all the papers in a box or
bag, and choose one at random. If the one you have chosen has the correct answer, that
student can receive an award, a prize, or other recognition.
Language
One of the most important tasks a first-grade student faces is honing his or her reading
and writing skills. Each day, Daily Core Curriculum offers quick practice of essential skills in
the areas of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. This is a good starter for
language arts and/or reading time on your schedule.
Math
The mastery of basic arithmetic skills is also a fundamental component of the first-grade
curriculum. With this program, students are appropriately challenged with daily math
problems that are aligned with the NCTM Standards. This is a good starter for math time on
your schedule.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Students quickly become focused as they copy the starters down and begin answering
them. For some questions, students may need to use textbooks and reference materials
to search for answers. Each problem usually takes no more than 5 minutes to complete. It
is recommended that the exercises be used on a daily basis versus once a week, in order
to keep these essential math and language skills fresh and at the ready for application
throughout the students’ school day.
