Culture Study through Poetry

Task: write two poems surrounding the theme of
culture, one ode and one free verse poem
What is an ode?
Google’s definition is “a lyric poem in the form of an
address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or
manner and written in varied or irregular meter.”
Mrs. Zagade’s definition is “a poem written dedicated to
something specific written in a fancy way. It makes some
things sound more important than they are.”
Example: Ode to Socks by Pablo Neruda
What is a free verse poem?
The poetry Foundation’s definition is “Nonmetrical,
nonrhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms
of speech.”
Mrs. Zagade’s definition is “a poem written in any style
with or without rhyme and any number of lines you
desire.”
Example: This is just to Say by Williams Carlos Williams
Ode to my son’s eyes Long Live India
By Mrs. Zagade By Mrs. Zagade
When I look
Use a spoon, you uncultured swine.
Into your eyes
I see No thanks, sir. My hands work just fine.
The most beautiful
Terrain looking Wear some clothes; what ugly rags around your waist.
Back But these are clothes, and I love the way my sari drapes.
At me.
Red marks look dirty in the middle of your hair.
I see fields of soil My sindoor? It’s a part of my status, so I don’t care.
Rich
And luscious
Wear your shoes; what’s wrong with you?
Where your ancestors
We bring no trace of the outside in like you do.
Toiled

The twinkle So undeveloped; just install some A/C.

Inside We use God’s breeze and shade from the Banyan tree.
Is so deep
Shining like Some glade plug-ins will do wonders here.
The sun Our incense burns thick and purifies our air.
As your name suggests
You need a proper table, setting, and some chairs.
I see the pain Can’t you see we eat and laugh without a care?
Inside, too
When your senses Well at least speak English so we can understand.
Are up मैं नहीं करूँ गा Main nahin karoonga. Jai hind.
When hands feel sticky
The confusion
Inside
When food feels icky

I see the
Terror
Behind
When a noise
Rings aloud

I see the
Love inside
When I
Hold you
In my arms

The doughy
Brown souls
Like a tiger’s eye gem
When you hold
Your mother’s face
How I love
To behold them
Now it’s your turn!
