QUESTION 1
Paralegals in law firms work under the supervision of an attorney although they do work
independently to some extent. Explain this statement. [4]

QUESTION 2

Mrs Neil wants to institute a divorce against her husband. She consults Baloyi Attorneys to help
her institute the divorce action. Baloyi Attorneys requires a deposit of R10 000 before they can
assist her with her divorce. Baloyi Attorneys prepares a divorce summons, issues the summons at
court and sends it to the Sheriff to serve on Mr Neil. The drafting of the summons costs R1 500
and the service (delivery) of summons by the Sheriff amounts to R500. After Mr Neil receives the
summons, he talks to Mrs Neil and they decide to give their marriage another chance for the sake
of their children. Mr Neil agrees to pay Mrs Neil through her Attorneys (Baloyi Attorneys) an
amount of R90 000 as a token of appreciation for agreeing to save their marriage.

2.1 What is the total amount of money the attorney received on trust? Give reasons for your
