Even as many sectors saw job opportunities decline in 2017 and 2018, renewable energy careers
in areas such as solar saw growth. Solar energy jobs grew five times faster than the rest of the U.S.
economy between 2014 and 2018, and the number of wind jobs increased 3.2% in 2019 alone4.
With multiple states throughout the U.S. making commitments to meet clean energy goals over
the next several years and utilities finding it more cost effective to invest in clean power, this
momentum is likely to continue and grow over coming years.

The MA in Sustainable Energy is a rigorous, cohort-based program that is completed over 21
months. The degree requires the completion of 10 courses (40 credit hours). The coursework
prepares graduates with fundamental sustainable energy business skills, while giving them
opportunities to critically evaluate energy policies and develop solutions for some of the most
challenging issues in the energy sector.
In addition to online coursework, the program features two in-person residencies in Washington DC.
The first residency is held over one-week and offers the opportunity to connect with peers and the
Johns Hopkins SAIS community. The second residency includes the capstone project presentation
and culminates with the Johns Hopkins SAIS commencement ceremony. For any questions or

Learning Outcomes

decarbonized energy sector to help mitigate climate change.
› Introduce students to the economics of sustainable energy sources and the financing options
available in the sector.

Course List
The MA in Sustainable Energy program is completed over 21 months in the fall. The
cohort-based structure ensures that our students have the opportunity to form close
professional relationships with their peers and benefit from a variety of perspectives.
The Johns Hopkins SAIS admissions committee takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications.
No minimum GPA and no GRE/GMAT scores is required to apply to the MA in Sustainable Energy
program. Instead, we will review all aspects of an applicant’s background, including their professional
and education history, letters of recommendation, and analytical essays.
Courses in Micro and Macro Economics are a prerequisite for this program. However, Johns Hopkins
offers an Economics Basics: Self-Paced course, which is available to students enrolled in the MA in
Sustainable Energy program for free. Students who successfully complete this course with a grade of
B- or higher will fulfill this requirement for the program.
