APNEA- Abnormal, periodic cessation of breathing.

ARTERIOSCLEROSIS- Thickening, decreased elasticity, and calcification of arterial walls.

AUSCULTATED- Listening to with a stethoscope.

BOUNDING- Describes a pulse that feels full because of the increased power of cardiac
contraction or as a result of increased blood volume.

BRADYCARDIA- A slow heartbeat; a pulse below 60 bpm.

BRADYPNEA- Abnormally slow breathing.

CALIBRATED- Determined by or checked against those of a standard (as in readings).

CERUMEN- A waxy secretion in the ear canal; commonly called ear wax.

CHEYNE-STOKES RESPIRATION- Deep, rapid breathing followed by a period of apnea.

CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD)- A progressive, irreversible


lung condition that results in diminished lung capacity.

DIURNAL VARIATION- Fluctuations that occur during each day.

INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES- Muscles located between the ribs that help with quiet respiration.

PARANASAL SINUSES- Hollow, air-filled cavities in the skull and facial bones. They lighten
the weight of the skull and increase the tone, or resonance, of speech.

PHARYNGITIS- Inflammation or infection of the pharynx, usually causing the symptoms of a


sore throat.

PRODUCTIVE COUGH- A cough that produces phlegm or mucus.

PULMONARY HYPERTENSION- High blood pressure that affects the pulmonary system
(pulmonary arteries and the right side of the heart).

RESPIRATORY ARREST- Stoppage of breathing.

SPUTUM- a mixture of saliva and mucus coughed up from the respiratory tract, typically as a
result of infection or other disease and often examined microscopically to aid medical diagnosis.
SURFACTANT- A mixture of protein and fats that lines the alveoli and prevents the tissues
from sticking together and collapsing during exhalation.

THORACENTESIS- Aspiration of a fluid from the pleural cavity.
