Topic: Innovative Marking Gauge for Metalworking: Pivotal Mechanism and 360° Adjustability

I.Situational Gap
When performing various metal works, particularly cutting materials with specific
dimensions, it is often difficult to cut without markings, which can result in misalignment and
incorrect material finish dimensions. The standard method is to use marking gauges and clamps
to ensure that the material being finished is measured correctly. However, existing marking
gauges lack the flexibility and accuracy required for complex metalworking tasks, prompting
artisans and engineers to seek a more innovative solution.

III. Proposed Technical Solution (Novelty over the State of the Art)
The proposed research study was conceptualized to achieve precise measurements
and comfortable usage of marking gauge which can make the work easier. The marking gauge
features a stable base designed to carry load, an adjustable height in the body support, and a
rotatable head for various angles. Moreover, it also has a pivotal mechanism in the pen at the
end of the moving rod to create not just a point in marking but a visible line as well.

Name of Invention: MARKING GAUGE (GB2499508A)

Inventor: THOMAS, EAVES STEVEN
Date of Publication: August 28, 2013

Abstract:
The marking gauge is designed for marking profiled cutting lines onto floor tiles,
featuring an adjustable sleeve manually moved along a distancing rod and secured in place,
with a pencil/marker pen housing attached to the sleeve. A low-friction end cap at the rod’s
forward end ensures contact with surfaces to be abutted, and the rod can be lengthened or
shortened using attachable/detachable sections. When in use, the rod is placed against a wall
or skirting board, guiding the marker across the tile to accommodate curved walls or those with
grouting, pointing, or expansion joints.

Prior Art 2:

Name of Invention : MARKING GAUGE (KR101592153B1)

Inventor : LEE, JUN MOON, KIM, JAE HEUNG
Date of Publication: February 5, 2016

Abstract:
The invention describes a marking gauge consisting of a support body with a moving rod
penetration groove and a fixing bolt, a moving rod inserted into the groove, a minute control
shaft adjusting the protruding length of the moving rod, and a mark blade material for marking.
The gauge enables precise control of the protruding length, down to 0.1 mm accuracy, by
adjusting the moving rod within the support body. Additionally, a second embodiment allows for
simultaneous marking of horizontal and vertical lines by vertically attaching two marking gauges.

Name of Invention :CASTING MARKING DEVICE (CN218875449U)
Inventors :DONG, YONG, BAI, XINGWEN, DONG, DAPENG
Date of Publication: April 18, 2023
Abstract:
The utility model outlines a casting marking device for casting tools, consisting of a
height gauge, a connecting seat, and a first locking bolt. The device allows for adjustable
marking length and angle, making it suitable for castings of various shapes or large sizes. The
gauge rod is vertically fixed on the base, and a fastening screw secures the position of the
gauge frame.
