Literary Criticism Approach Use: Philosophical Approach

Upon reviewing all the eight Literary criticism approaches provided in this unit, I
strongly agree that To be or not to be from hamlet written by William Shakespear
holds more philosophical values than any other approaches when it comes to
criticising literary master piece. These famous lines from hamlet is a soliloquy
which the speaker is talking to himself and agonizing and battling his own inner
perso1nality. It views our life existence a reflection of our life during the difficult
situations, whhen times we are asking ourselves whether is it still worth to live or
just to end this life. Hamlet famous line “To be or not to be, that is the question”
enclose an open-ended thoughts that he is raging his own mind which I think that
his character portray it really effective as it talks about the general theme of the
story which is the life existence. Though there is no direct evidence that can prove
whether Hamlet believes in the
existence of God, upon reading the whole poetry I observed that he is hesitant in
commiting suicide which is a reflection that human beings still believes that taking
one’s life is against our moral virtues. That our moral judgement of commiting
suicide is always against our will. With this we can say that human use universal
ethical views when it comes to life and death. We all know that William Shakespear
is very famous because he can exactly translate his complex philosophical ideas
into words and script and perform on stage. The opening line “To be or not to be” is
very straightforward and explicitly convey the direct meaning choosing to die or
to live. though that next lines are composed of implicit lines that connotes different
views in life. Digging deeper it consist of variety concepts and meaning that we can
apply in our life. Citing an issue that is very relevant in our generation is the number
of our young generation committing suicide because of mental health due to
rejections from love ones. I think the character convey the same situation when he
is thinking that his life is useless since he can’t win the love of Ophelia due to the
pressure from her family. Though the the speaker bad action–commiting suicide, is
the higlight of this poetry, the last line “Be all my sins remembered” indicating the
moral obligation of the character to the general philosophical view of this human
act. living a message that we all should remember that committing suicide is a sin.

I have been reading the poem many times now trying to look for a discussion abut
the
concept of good and evil. thw whole soliloquy itself creates a boarder between
good and evil, between life and death, and between choosing to live and and to die.
But one line that seems create a vivid dimension of these contrast is the line “Thus
conscience doth make cowards of us all,” I think there is a religious proportion that
this line is trying to convey. Conscience dispatch an inner self of human, an
invisible evident that God existance. A voice that tell us what is good and what is
bad. and with this added element in this poem, hamlet fear of life after death is a
realization. Making a conclusion that this fear of unknown after life is one of our
basis and concept between life and death and good and evil. The poem somehow
discuss a very important aspect of human life when it comes of moral, ethical and
physiologiocal aspect. As human being our drive to live is base on our needs and
wants. Using Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, love and esteem needs are
on the third level of needs. Human need attention and love and care from our family
and love ones without these we find our life useless and we will start to question
our existence which how the character in this poem trying to show us. In such a
critical situation, the speaker needs the love and care of the love of his life but he is
failed to get it. As a result he feels it’s better to die than to living alone and
miserable. With all these thoughts, I know in some point of our life we once asked
ourselves a question “To be or not to be”.
