My product that I have chosen to show is a form of communication that teachers use to help

communicate with their students that are nonverbal and/or have autism. This product is called the Picture

Exchange Communication System. It is a series of various cards with pictures on them to show a child what

someone needs or wants them to do. The purpose of the Picture Exchange Communication system is to teach

those without or with limited spoken language skills a way to communicate. My product will include a ring of

PECS cards and a folder made up of a guide for the cards, background information about the cards, and a couple

of scenarios in which the cards would be used. This product will help people see how the PECS system can be

used in the real world. The PECS system has and could have a big impact on the world for nonverbal children.

Kids that are without or with limited communication can use this system to communicate with others their wants

and needs. This system is a way for people with speaking disabilities or autism to communicate without relying

on their words.

For this process, I will decide on 10-15 pictures that I think will be the most used on a daily basis. Then

I print them out and laminate them. Printing the pictures out is necessary especially for young children, because

it help them to understand what you wan them to do by seeing it in a picture that they can touch. Laminating

these pictures isn’t necessary, but for the cards to stay intact laminating is probably a good idea. Once I’m done

just printing the cards, I will start doing some things to make the use of these cards more convenient. For me I

would hole punch every card a put them onto a ring. Then I think I am going to put them on badge retractor.

This is so not necessary but it just makes the cards so easily accessible. You can just wear them with your school

name tag. The last step in the process to make my product would be to type and print out some directional

papers to put into a folder. Some materials I would need is paper, a printer, a laminator, scissors, hole punch,

folder, and writing utensils. I would say this should only take me around 2 days to complete if not only one day.

This all really depends how much time you put into each item.

I am quite excited to do this project, because of my love for kids. Helping kids that are nonverbal is an

incredible experience, because they are truly the sweetest. I think the most enjoyable part of this project will be

cutting and laminating the cards. I think that the easiest part is going to be picking which cards to print out. The

most difficult part of this project I already know is going to be making the directional papers. I think this will be

the hardest, because for me putting my thoughts about kids into words is difficult sometimes. Also when I get

frustrated it’s hard for me to want to keep doing that thing. I will overcome this by thinking very hard about ways

I can explain the PECS system. As well as anytime I get frustrated, I will take a break from the project then

come back later and do it again. I don’t think I will need any help with this project as far as the ideas, but I might

need to ask for some supplies from our office.

The nest steps in my project would just be to collect all my supplies and get started. The only supplies I

would need to get are a badge retractor, which I think I already have at home, and a hole punch. I have already

started picking out some of the pictures I’m going to use for the cards. The next thing is to just print those

pictures out and get started. I feel very prepared for this project. I think the research and shadowing I have done

has prepared me perfectly to be able to explain this product to anyone.
