Reimposing the Death Penalty

Death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is the sentence of death

imposed by the government as a punishment for a serious crime. The death penalty
was executed to deter people for committing a crime and some governments believe
that this is the way to end the violent crimes. The capital punishment was imposed twice
in the Philippines. In 1965, under Ferdinand Marcos presidency wherein electric chairs
were used and then it was reinstated under Fidel Ramos presidency wherein gas
chambers were added as an instrument for execution. Death penalty

The government believes that this type of punishment would lessen the criminal
rate. The current president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte believes that this
punishment is the answer to finish the crimes- “This law will not only help us deter
criminality, but also save our children from the dangers posed by the illegal dangerous
drugs”, he insisted. It is said that death penalty is the most extreme punishment that a
convict can received. Also, the fact that it imposes an irrevocable sentence makes it
even more critical and people starts to be terrified of committing crimes. But then,
countries which imposed the capital punishment do not have lower crime rates than
countries without this punishment. The countries, El Salvador and Jamaica have
imposed the death penalty, yet they are leading in the countries who have the highest
homicide cases in the world. In addition, experts said that there is no credible evidence
saying that this punishment can deter crimes effectively.

There are multiple factors why the death penalty is ineffective but the mainly
reason is the country’s flawed justice system. Back then in the Philippines, when the
death penalty was reintroduced, there was a painter who…Corruption is one of the
complications in the Philippines. There are cases reported that contains fraudulent
management of the government. There are also Filipinos that protest and fight against
the capital punishment because of the immoral decision. It is believed that death penalty
contravenes the most important human right — the right to life.

The government has always used punishment to discourage people in doing

such crimes but the capital punishment should not be included. It must not be
reimposed and should be abolished forever. The death penalty is not acceptable, for it
is irrevocable and violates human rights. Also, corruption is present in the Philippines
which makes our justice system flawed. Innocent lives would be taken and there would
be no justice served.
