Safeguarding Policy
This policy applies to all staff (permanent, casual and temporary) who may come into contact
with children, young people and vulnerable adults in the course of their work. For the purposes
of this policy it also includes anyone working with us including sub-contractors’ staff, associates
and freelance staff.
Our Commitment
We will ensure all staff, and everyone working with us, recognise and accept their
responsibilities to:
• Develop awareness and understanding of Safeguarding issues;
• Maintain their knowledge of our Safeguarding policies and procedures;
• Act appropriately to address all Safeguarding concerns.

This commitment has been determined by our Senior Management Team and is reflected
throughout all levels of our organisation.

Definitions and Designated Person


• In respect of this policy a child and young person is someone aged under 18 years of age
including an unborn baby.
• An adult at risk is a person over 18 who is or may be in need of additional support
from community care services, such as those who have learning disabilities, older people,
people with physical or sensory disabilities, and people with mental health illnesses.
The Designated Person for Safeguarding is the SHEQ Manager. All staff must report any
allegations immediately to the Designated Person.

Purpose of this Policy


This policy provides advice for staff to help protect all beneficiaries from maltreatment and
prevent impairment. Abuse and neglect are forms of maltreatment. Our policy is to ensure that
all who work with us maintain a proper focus on safeguarding.
Our Safeguarding approach is based on substantial guidance on the protection of beneficiaries
from all forms of abuse including:
• Physical;
• Sexual;
• Psychological/emotional;
• Financial or material;
• Neglect;
• Acts of omission and impairment to their personal and social development.

Communication
Our commitment and approach to Safeguarding is communicated to all staff by line managers
during recruitment, at induction and through refresher training at least every two years.

Our Responsibilities
We will:
• Respect and promote the rights, wishes and feelings of beneficiaries;
• Promote and implement appropriate procedures to safeguard the well-being of beneficiaries
and protect them from abuse;
• Train and support staff to adopt best practice to safeguard and protect beneficiaries from
abuse and to minimise risk to themselves;
• Require staff to adopt and abide by this policy;
• Respond to any allegations of misconduct or abuse of young people or vulnerable adults in line
with this policy and procedure.

Recruitment
All staff, where appropriate, are subject to a DBS Check (Disclosure and Barring Service).

Training and Development


Training, development and continuous review is key to ensuring that this Safeguarding Policy is
implemented effectively.
All staff, sub-contractors, associates and freelance staff working for and on behalf of the
Company will receive safeguarding training, the level of which will be appropriate for the role
and as identified at their induction.

Procurement
Contractors working on behalf of Waveney’s will be required to meet the Company’s
Safeguarding Policy Requirements.
