HRM Simulation Activities: Decisions, Rationales, & Presentation (40%)

Dates: Weeks 1-14

 Weeks 1-14: Complete HRMT Simulation play: While staying within budget, make effective HRM decisions
that work towards increasing productivity, quality, diversity, retention, and morale; while reducing
grievances, accidents, overtime, and absenteeism. Please see planning calendar for the schedule of special

Details: Student groups will participate in the web based HRM Simulation (http://www.interpretive.com). The project
requires teams to compete in managing an HR Department of a medium-sized manufacturing firm. In completing this
project, teams will be able to apply the principles learned in the course in making strategic HR decisions and
observing their impact. Simulation activities will support learning outcomes 1 to 4.

Teams Rankings (5% per simulation year): competitive results of HRM simulation play will be based on the balanced
scorecard: Teams in the top quarter will receive 5%; teams in the second quarter will receive 4%; teams in the third
quarter will receive 3%; and teams in the bottom quarter will receive 2%. Teams will be penalized 1% for going
overbudget and 1% for not advancing play by deadlines set on the planning calendar and on the simulation. During
the first week, students will be given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the simulation through individual
benchmark play. Students must demonstrate that they have completed two practice rounds before being placed on a
team.

Peer evaluation (available on the simulation website) gives students 100 points to disperse among the various team

score of 100 if everybody contributed equally.

Academic Integrity
According to Academic Integrity Policy (2021):
Academic Integrity is demonstrated by students taking steps to make sure that their instructor can
accurately assess a student’s skill level for a given topic. This means that the work students submit must be
their own, within the parameters of the assigned work to be assessed, and any part of that work that is not
their own is appropriately attributed.

Students also demonstrate Academic Integrity by taking steps to ensure that their efforts are not used by
other students to misrepresent their skills during assessment. In other words, supporting others in
violations of the principles of Academic Integrity is itself a violation of these principles.

When students, intentionally or not, obfuscate, deceive, or hinder the ability of NAIT instructors and
programs to assess their performance they will be considered to have violated the NAIT principles of
Academic Integrity. These violations are categorized as Academic misconduct. (SR 1.3, Section 1.0., 2021)
Every NAIT student must complete NAIT Modules on Academic Integrity for your awareness and to increase your
knowledge as to the expectations – knowledge that is critical to your success.
Student Responsibility: It is expected that students will be responsible citizens of the Institute by following the
Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy (SR 1.0) (2021). As such, each student will assist in the preservation of
Institute property and assume responsibility for their education by staying informed of and abiding by academic
requirements and policies; demonstrate respect toward others; and meet expectations concerning attendance,
assignments, deadlines, and appointments. (Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy, SR 1.0., 2021)
Equity and Inclusion: NAIT is committed to advancing equity and to actively and intentionally creating learning
environments that promote a sense of belonging and dignity that ensure all people are safe, respected and valued.
Acknowledging that every member of the NAIT community has a role in and responsibility to this work, NAIT
provides the resources and support necessary for programs, departments and individuals to champion equity,
diversity and inclusion and address barriers in meaningful ways.
Territorial Acknowledgement: At NAIT, we honour and acknowledge that the land on which we learn, work and live is
Treaty Six territory. We seek to learn from history and the lessons that have come before us, and to draw on the
wisdom of the First Peoples in Canada. Only through learning can we move forward in truth and reconciliation, and to
a better future together.
Other Course-Specific Information: If your team requires coaching or conflict resolution, please contact the Student
Resolution Office (SRO): https://www.nait.ca/nait/life-at-nait/clubs-groups-community/fairness-conflict-resolution
Student Engagement and Attendance Expectations:

(BStokes, June 2023) *Information in this document may be subject to change 5|7
HRMT1101, Winter 2024, Section Syllabus
Each 3-credit course is expected to be the equivalent of 135 student learning hours (including time spent in class,
homework, studying, and so on). Classes that have fewer scheduled hours require a greater commitment to
independent learning by the student.
To maintain an environment that is conducive to learning, it is expected that all students conduct themselves in a
respectful and professional manner.
The following are encouraged and adhered to:
1. Be punctual and actively engage in class activities and discussions to enhance understanding of concepts
and real-world applications and improve performance in summative assessments.
2. Be inclusive and respectful to others; seek counsel from the Student Resolution Office if your team requires
coaching or conflict resolution.
3. Engage in learning by avoiding distracting activities/conversations, using cell phone and other devices.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of course material when answering questions or discussing course concepts in
class; this demonstrates pre-class preparation and completion of required readings.
5. Submit assignments and quizzes on due dates.
6. Participate actively and in a timely manner in team projects to maintain a positive team atmosphere.
