Pre Colonial
Inhabited 30,000 years ago Negritos were the first dweller, they came from Africa to Southeast Asia
Austronesians were seafarer they were the 2nd inhabitants of the Philippines
Polynesians came next

Reasons why the pre-colonial period is much better than we were colonized
1. Women shared equal status with men- they have the same rights and privileges.
2. Society was more tolerant
3. Higher standard of Government
4. Working Judicial and legislative system
5. We were self sufficient
6. Smoother foreign Relations
7. The know- how to make advance weapons
8. Several professions already existed
9. High Literacy Rate
10. Advanced Civilization

Spanish Era
1521- Portuguese Explorer Ferdinand Magellan welcomed by the ruler of Cebu

1565- Established a permanent settlement in the Philippines led by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. He founded
the City of Manila as the capital of the Spanish Empire.

Manila Cathedral is a symbol of Spanish legacy in the Philippines

Galleon Trade -System of routes that linked Manila with Acapulco, Mexico and allowed the exchange of
goods and ideas between Asia and America, which made Manila one of the wealthiest city.

The Legacy of Spain were;


Christianity, Spanish Language and concept of Nationhood

Spanish Social Classes


1. “Peninsulares” are full blooded Spanish born out of parent who were both Spanish
2. Illustrados- are Filipinos who were able to study abroad
3. Chinese/ Spanish Mestizos
4. Indios- Filipinos who were treated as 2nd class citizens in their own country

Economic Program
1. Encomienda – some Filipinos were permitted to own land , they are called encomendero, and
the proof of ownership is called Titulo
2. Hacienda- land for agricultural and animal raising and breeding
3. Imposition of different taxes
4. Galleon Trade
5. Polo Y Servicio- forced labor, they were obliged to work for a week without pay

American Era
Spanish American War started in Cuba

May 1, 1898- America led by the US admiral Dewey in participation of President Emilio Aguinaldo
attacked the Spanish Navy in Manila Bay

June 12, 1898 – The Philippine declaration of independence was proclaimed in Cavite el Viejo

National Flag – was made in Hongkong by Marcela Agoncilllo, Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Herbosa

Marcha Filipino Magdalo – was the former name of Lupang HInirang. It was composed of Julian
Felipe, played by San Francisco Malabon Marching Band.
