About This Book
The Word Family Workbook series introduces your child to the ability to isolate, blend, and
segment sounds.
They will learn to identify and blend the sounds of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC)
words and transition from sounding out phonemes to reading simple words. This work-
book contains a variety of activities, including tracing, writing, read-aloud words, and
matching sounds to images.
Some activities may include consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant (CCVC) words and

diagraphs.
SKILLS AND CONCEPTS
Phonological awareness.
Phonics and decoding.
Correct handwriting technique.
Build vocabulary skills.
Printing Instructions
This book is designed to print in 8.5 x 11 paper format. When printing on a different size
paper, adjust the Printer Page Settings as needed. Printing a single test page before
printing the complete book is highly recommended.

How to Use
PICTURE CARDS
Start each lesson using the picture cards. Prompt the student to provide a word that best
describes the picture.
These cards may be used for:
1) Matching games.
2) Sequence games.
3) Flashcard activities.
WORD FAMILY CHART
Use the All-In-One Basic Word Family Chart to associate an image with each of the words
taught in the workbook, helping the students build their vocabulary as they learn new
words.
Lamination is recommended for durability.
WORD FAMILY LIST
Instruct the students to read each word aloud by blending the individual phoneme
sounds. Encourage students to look at the sound and letter patterns in each word as they
read the list.
For the additional activities, please reference each page that contains instructions
on how to complete the exercise.

Blending Sounds
When blending sounds, certain phonemes* have a continuous sound, while others do not.
Example: In the word “mat,” the “m” and the “a” are elongated, but the “t” is short — “mmmaaat.”
If the sound is elongated, hold the sound for one to two seconds, and blend it into the next sound of
the word. If the sound is not elongated, say the sound once, pause for one second, and then say the
next sound.
Example: To blend the word pan, say “p (pause for one second) aaannn.”
* Individual speech sounds.

2. Slowly move your finger along the dotted line and blend the letter sounds.

3. Quickly move your finger along the arrow, pronouncing the sounds.
