SAY NO TO DOWRY
A dowry is a transfer of parental property at the marriage of a daughter. It
includes furniture, linen, money etc. Dowry contrasts with the related concept
of bride price. It is the wealth transferred from the bride’s family to the groom
or his family. Disputes related to dowry sometimes result in acts of violence
against the women including killing and acid attacks. I am Bisma Daud & I
conducted this survey in University of Gujrat, Sialkot sub campus. I would
like to share how dowry plays a big role when the two families get involved.
Families of the bride and groom negotiate a transfer of assets to the groom and
his family in exchange for marrying the bride, often within the context of an
arranged marriage. Dissatisfaction with the amount of dowry may result in
abuse of the bride. In extreme cases "dowry deaths" or the murder of the bride
by her husband and his family take place. So the practice of dowry in South
Asia is a controversial subject. Dowry is an ancient custom Dowries continue
to be expected and demanded as a condition to accept a marriage proposal, in
some parts of the world, mainly in parts of Asia, The research was being
conducted on people who face the dowry system in Sialkot. It happened
because of greed factor, Propulsion towards Adhering to Customs and urge to
show off.
Factors that increase the dowry system in Pakistan that according to the result 98.0% of people agree that the dowry is a

major problem concerning the Muslim community because the custom of giving dowry is not a part of Islam. This is a
totally un-Islamic practice. In Islam, women are not owned by their families and should not be 'traded with' in this
manner. It is an insulting practice and 96% of people agree that the dowry is a serious issue because dowry System is

social fabric. Many times, often girl is tortured, slighted and humiliated for no fault of hers but because the dowry she
brings is not rich enough. 94.0% of people think that girl being considered burden due to dowry because when the
question of marrying the girls comes, the parents are the unhappiest creatures on earth. The only problem is not to find
a groom suitable for the girl, but to meet demand of dowry. about 94.0% people are in the favor of ending dowry
system because then girls won’t be tortured and people will stop killing their daughters and girls will not be considered
as a burden. 90% of people agree that rich people are promoting dowry system by spending lavishly on marriages.
Marriage in our country is an occasion for insane displays of spending on outrageously lavish valimas, mehndi
banquets, jewelry, giveaways, dowry and similar acts. The reasons behind our irrational spending on marriages are
obvious. Long established traditions of wedding functions and obligations of giving jewelry, dowry and giveaways has
created a standard on which each family tries to excel more than it actually can. And about 86% of people agree that dowry
is responsible for growing cases of divorce because when a woman gets married, if she doesn’t bring dowry according to in-laws
then they tell her that she will be divorced. And 86% people also agree that government should legally ban dowry and when
dowry will be banned there would be no burden on the parents for arranging dowry in order to get their daughters
married. 86% people are in the favor of joining anti-dowry system so the root of all problems will come to an end. And
24% people also agree with that the dowry is the right of women In Islam the dowry is one of the rights of the wife, which is
hers to take in total and is lawful for her, in contrast to the widespread practice in some countries, where the wife is given no dowry.
Evidence that the wife must be given her dowry is found in many places and 12% people are in the favor of giving and taking dowry
because when the girl brings dowry she feels that she gained a certain level of respect in the in-laws and she will not be teased for not
bring any dowry.
We can stop dowry by educating people and people have to take a Pledge That they won’t give it and they won’t take it,
Make People Aware about what they are doing, Do Not Be Greedy Even if they take it as a Custom and Never Take
your Daughter as a Formality.
